“Dear PoP,

There was just another shooting in NW. A young teen on a bike fired a gun at someone at 9th and R and fled west down R and turned north on 10th. He ditched the gun just before the cops tackled him at the intersection of 10th and Westminster. I got this information from the police on the scene but I’m not sure if anyone was injured. This is the third or fourth shooting within a 3 block radius in the past 3 weeks and appears to be gang retaliation. I have a feel this is only going to get worse as summer rolls in.”

From MPD:

“Tonight at approximately 9:30 pm officers heard sounds of gun shots in the area of 8th and R Street, NW. Officers began canvassing the area and located a citizen who provided the officers with a description of the possible suspect(s). Members of the Third District Crime Suppression Team observed a person matching the lookout in the area. When the officers attempted to stop the suspect he fled from the officers; however the officers were able to eventually stop the suspect and recovered a handgun. The suspect was placed under arrest.

Based of the information provided by the citizens in the area the officers were able to apprehend the suspect and recover a handgun.

If you observe any suspicious activity please call 911 immediately so an officer can respond out and investigate the matter.”

I received the following reader report around 3pm Sun. afternoon titled “Drive by at 8 and R St, NW”:

“Shooting at 8th and R St, NW. At least one person shot. Looked nonresponsive.

Heard 8-10 shots, and a car peeled out down west down R.”

Anyone else hear/see anything?

UPDATE from MPD:

“There were two adult males shot. One in leg and one in arm. Lookout for black car fleeing area.”

UPDATE: More from MPD:

“On today’s date, at approximately 2:16 hrs, MPD units responded to the vicinity of the 800 block of R Street, N.W., for the sounds of gunshots. Upon their arrival, two males were found with non-life threatening gunshot injuries. A preliminary investigation indicates that the victims were not unknown to the perpetrator(s).”

The Craigslist ad says:

“One bedroom basement unit for immediate rent in NW DC area of Shaw/Logan East/Bloomingdale, 3 blocks to the Shaw metro stop on the green and yellow lines.

Rent is $1100 per month and includes all utilities including cable TV with HBO/Showtime and high speed wireless internet. The basement unit is the entire lower level of a row house, above ground and gets lots of sunlight all day. It comes with own full bathroom and living room, only the kitchen upstairs is shared but there is a fridge in the basement unit, so if you like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen and cook every night, this is probably not the place for you…This is a great cheap alternative to an apartment for whose who would like more privacy in a shared house. The kitchen and laundry are the only shared areas in the entire house. The house has two other residents, a couple in their early 30s who also own the property.

The entire house was renovated recently so everything is brand new. The unit comes furnished, but can be removed if tenant has own furniture.

See photos here.

The house is a 20 min walk or 10 min bike ride to downtown and only 10 min walk to the restaurants, shops and nightlife of the U St corridor and Logan Circle. Street parking is easily available right in front of the house.”

$1100 sound realistic for this 1 bedroom given the shared kitchen?

We’ve admired their sweet sign before:

But since I see it is their 35th anniversary (Congrats!) I thought it was time for a proper judging. According to their Web site (who knew they had a Web site?):

Originally a Safeway store in the 60’s and early 70’s, the store became Capitol Supermarket in April 1976. We are a hard working Korean-American family with 3 decades of experience in the grocery business. We started by selling mainly mainstream everyday items at a low price, but as time passed our store changed with the times. Because our nation and our city is such a melting pot, we began selling international foods including a full line of Latino, Asian, and African products. In 2006, we added a full line of fresh seafood including fresh whole fish, fresh clams and mussels and live blue crabs in the summer. In 2008, we updated our beer and wine department to add more fine and imported wines and a wider selection of micro-brew and craft beers. Also in 2008 we upgraded our produce case to hold a wider selection of fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy eating. More recently we began selling more all natural and organic food items and for those on the go, we partnered with the Culinary Circle brand and added a full line of gourmet ready-to-heat and eat entrees.

And we are not finished upgrading! We are planning even more exciting changes in the upcoming years including adding more hard to find products to our store. Although our store has changed over time, we have not forgotten our original vision of providing savings to our loyal customers. So please keep checking in and see what’s new at Capitol Supermarket!

They are located at 1231 11th St, NW. Any fans?

Renew Shaw spotted the sign over the weekend and I was able to get a little more info from the folks at Capital City Real Estate. They tell me:

“We plan to do 12 two level duplexes. Each 2 bedroom 2 bath. Pricing is not finalized as the project is 6-9 months out, but we plan to have units priced in the mid to high 400’s and a couple maybe just a hair above. There will be parking available for sale for the units once the old Kelsey Gardens development is complete. (there will be rental parking in the meantime, on the Kelsey Gardens site).”

We most recently looked at a Capital City Real Estate project in Columbia Heights at 13th and Park Rd, NW. Though we’ve looked at many others with this one being the most popular so far.

“Dear PoP,

I was just thinking I haven’t seen a follow-up on much needed coffee in my Florida and U neighborhood. Do you have any idea what came of the 715 Florida Ave place?”

and

“Hey PoP. Whats up with the Brixton?! I pass it every day and haven’t seen any activity there since they put up the fence.”

There have been a lot of recent inquiries and emails about these two projects. The Independent is a coffee lounge and bar coming to 715 Florida Ave, NW (just east of 9th and U St.). The exact description from the liquor license was:

“Coffee House, bar lounge, 199 seats and total occupancy of 235 on first floor and storage on first and basement. Summer Garden with 75 seats and a total occupancy of 90.”

I can tell you that these projects continues to move forward – I recently traded emails with the architect (it is the same architect for Brixton and Independent). However glancing at 715 Florida Ave, NW at this point it looks like only a Demolition permit has been issued for the Independent. I’m not sure what permits have been issued for the Brixton but I think work has been ongoing.

I believe that some of the ownership team are the same folks behind the Brixton and Blackbyrd opening soon next to Marvin (the Hilton brothers) not to mention Billy Simpson’s in Petworth. I’m told all of these projects continue to move forward. It seems that the strategy is to complete one project before moving on to the other. Clearly – Blackbyrd (14th and U St, NW next to Marvin) will be completed first. Following will be Brixton, the Independent and Billy Simpson’s. I don’t know in what order. But they’re all still coming! (Knock wood…)
