Oct. ’11

“Dear PoPville,

While I miss their beat-up old sign a bit at the corner of Georgia & Quincy — the one with the words “Fried” still faintly visible despite their efforts to scrape it off — the new one’s pretty nice and still has that super-happy chicken. Now if only they were open after work instead of just breakfast and lunch…”

Eat Chicken is located at the corner of Georgia and Quincy St, NW across from the Petworth metro.

So what is the PL in the photo above? Chicken place? The new logo is pretty sweet:

Below is what it looked like in June ’08.

“Dear PoPville,

Two Petworth residents are joining forces to open a new yoga studio on Georgia Avenue, directly across the street from Fusion (4815 Georgia Ave, NW). The studio will be called Golden Heart Yoga DC. Its sister studio, Golden Heart Yoga Annapolis, has been voted “best yoga studio” in Annapolis for the last several years.

Golden Heart Yoga DC will be a community-oriented space, offering a variety of classes in traditional yoga styles, as well as pre-natal, mom/dad and baby classes, gentle yoga for seniors and others with less flexibility, and Friday evening donation classes to raise money for local charities and non-profits.

We’re looking forward to opening our doors soon after Thanksgiving, if all goes well. Stay tuned!”

Awesome news! Ever since Yoga House Studio closed above what is now Looking Glass Lounge, Petworthians have been without a proper yoga studio. Great to have it back. Pretty cool little block too – don’t forget there is already a dance studio (which will be right next door to the yoga studio.)

“DCCX, presented by Dogfish Head Alehouse and Family Bike Shop, is offering a day of bicycle racing, refreshments, kids’ fun and Civil War history this Sunday, Oct. 23.

The course is on the historic grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, located at the corner of Upshur St and Rock Creek Church Rd, NW. More than 700 competitors in the cyclocross races will compete in different events running from 8:30 am until 5 pm — with the elite racers taking off at noon (for women) and 3 pm (for men).

DCCX, part of the Bikereg.com MABRAcross Super 8 race series, is a great place to check out high-level bike racing in a relaxed environment — or to strap on a helmet and try racing for the first time. Registration is still open, and while some categories are full, slots are still available in the 4:15 pm Rookies’ Race.

And come out on Saturday afternoon from 1:30 pm until 4 pm for a chance to pre-ride the course.”

More info from DCCX here. A reader gave a good run down of a previous year’s event for competitors and spectators here.

I was finally able to get a look inside the new building, The Griffin, located at the corner of Georgia and Quincy Ave, NW by the Petworth metro. Last we heard the whole building was for sale but it’s looking like it could become rentals sooner rather than later. I’ll update with prices when they become available. Anyway, thought folks would like to see how the units came out:

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

From an email:

“Last month the Petworth Community Market (PCM) concluded another successful season full of delicious food, great music, and good times with neighbors. In celebration, join PCM and neighbors at the End of Season Celebration and Fundraiser on Wednesday, October 19th from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Island Cafe (829 Upshur Street, NW).

The season has much to celebrate with the introduction of the acceptance of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, a SNAP matching program, an expanded season with new hours, and the offering of several winter CSA programs by participating PCM vendors (details below).

The End of Season Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the market’s success and to begin seeking support for the funding of our 2012 SNAP matching program. The program currently offers a matching contribution of 50 cents for every dollar of SNAP benefit in an effort to make the offerings of the market more attractive to all families throughout the community. Through the proceeds of the celebration, PCM plans to expand to a full dollar-for-dollar match. The fundraiser will ask for a suggested donation of $10 at the door and Island Cafe will donate 10% of bar proceeds to PCM. Happy Hour drink specials will be in effect and tasty bites courtesy of Island Cafe will be available.

Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2011
Time: 6-8 PM
Location: Island Cafe, 829 Upshur Street, NW
