I frequently walk my dog up this part of 2nd Street NW and I’ve always thought of this as “the house across the street from the Anna J. Cooper House”. We’ve visited this block fairly recently in Popville as you can see from this photo of the subject house with a raging fire across the street, and for a recent Good Deal or Not Revisited. I’m pleased to report that the home that had the devastating fire earlier this year has been gutted and stabilized. Hopefully, re-building will commence soon.

I gotta agree that this block is awesome. I think I’ve featured half a dozen as house of the day in the past. This 3 bed/1.5 bath is going for $699,000.

It’s been a long journey for Ken’s. Last we heard in July it looked like they were going to become a Chinese Restaurant. Alas the mystery is no longer – thanks to a reader for sending the word:
“Ken’s Carryout is becoming…
Arthur Treacher’s! I don’t really know how this is going to work, since it’s a small space and there probably won’t be much room for seating, but there it is.”
According to wikipedia:
“Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips is a fast food seafood restaurant chain. As of 2008, there were 45 stores in 8 northern states of the United States which serve fish and chips. Its main competitors are Long John Silver’s and Captain D’s. To this day many locations have been cobranded with Nathan’s.”
Any fans?

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up. I stopped by Sat. afternoon and indeed they were closed. Anyone know if it is a permanent closing. I always thought this was gonna be a tough location to survive because it didn’t have great visibility in the basement of a mostly residential block. I’ll be sure to update if they or someone else opens in the space.
Florida Coffee House (220 Florida Ave, NW) opened in Jan. 11 and we judged them in April ’11.

Many neighborhoods in the city continue to see an active wave of renovations. There are clearly both cash investors able and willing to close quickly on properties that are in disrepair, as well as buyers on the back end, willing to spend on revived housing stock. This LeDroit Park home (which, in this case, could have also been appropriately advertised as Bloomingdale) is a classic example. In February 2011, a cash buyer paid $315,050, which was above the listed price of $299,995. and closed a mere sixteen days following the contract date.

Want to learn about gardening or urban farming? Better access to fresh produce? Or workshops to improve your health? Come out to the Green Tomorrow’s and CSA Open House! Green Tomorrows (GT) is a gardening and education program providing fresh food to individuals or families in DC. Our CSA (Community supported agriculture) program is a produce subscription program, where participants can earn a weekly bag of locally grown, organic produce.
How it works: Green Tomorrows is a program we like to think of as a “learn for food” program. In exchange for two or more hours per week of instructional, hands-on help on the farm, participants receive a bag of fresh farm fruits and vegetables. GT participants are encouraged to attend free Growing Gardens Workshops to further their learning experience and/or to count as their two hours for that week. With a subscription to our CSA program, participants can receive local fresh organic produce; we even provide a Common Good City Farm bag!
