I’ve probably walked by the Black Cat at least 3,782 3,783 times. This is the first time I’ve ever noticed that there actually is a black cat painted on the building. Nice.

I used to be a big fan of 99.1 WHFS. So I have the station programmed in my car. As we all know by know 99.1 changed formats many months ago. And it is about 100% better! Some of the Spanish songs are great. But what I really love about it is the little identifying jingle “neuve nueve punto uno El ZOOOOOOOOL”. Freaking awesome. Naturally they have a cool poster to match their cool jingle. So I dare you to hear that jingle and not sing it in your head for at least two hours. Crap now I’m going to be singing it for the next two hours…

Hello, Prince of Petworth readers! Your faithful chronicler of all things upper-Northwest has allowed me to spend a few moments recounting what I can remember of last night’s Wilco concert.

Who am I? I’m author of one of the winning contest entries. Remember the picture at the Tabard Inn? The guy who put his dad in the shot and exploited a personal tragedy so he could go to a rock concert. That’s me. And yeah, I know what you might be thinking but c’mon, it’s WILCO.

When critics hailed their 2002 release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as Wilco-meets-Radiohead they were inadvertently giving credence to the idea that as Radiohead has come to be recognized as the world’s greatest band, Wilco may also be considered America’s nominee. Since then they’ve released three more albums, including a double-live, and won two Grammy’s. All reasons why it was so surprising to see them, rock royalty, on stage at 9 PM. Review continues after the jump. (more…)

I kept hanging around hoping they’d pick me as an extra but alas no luck. I couldn’t get a clear answer but I think the group is called “Lifeblood”.

After accepting the fact that I am a hypocrite I thought I’d embrace “cool” city posters. You know you see these posters on light poles, news boxes, etc. I like this one for a show at the Blackcat this coming Sunday.

So here’s one for the “if the music is too loud, you’re too old” category:
I went to see a show at Rock and Roll Hotel…braving the late start (didn’t get in line until after 10:30), late night…as sad as that is to admit…but it was a Friday and it seemed about time.

So, once inside it was time to grab a couple of beers and settle in for the show. Over the course of the evening a few things stick out as unnecessarily annoying. And so, as I sit here post-concert unwinding with a tall glass of scotch and replaying the evening in my head, I thought I’d seek some insight and understanding on a few things.

Most importantly, overall, the night worked out well for a last-minute, live music fix. Rock and Roll Hotel is an awesome small venue and the band was downright enjoyable with a good sound. However, there were a few annoying encounters with other concert-goers that were just downright rude, and pointlessly so. And as I ponder it, I have to wonder whether there’s been a loss common decency in our interactions with others, am I getting too old and thus too sensitive to this or was it just an anomaly, a couple of off-moments in an otherwise good show? [Story continues after the jump] (more…)

You guys are crazy! Wilco always does an unbelievable show at the 9:30 club. And I have not received one measly entry. So here, now you’ve seen a picture of the actual ticket. The rules for the competition are quite simple. Email me a photo of your favorite place in DC or your house/apt. and write a paragraph why. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a photo in Petworth. This can be a photo anywhere in DC from the Mall to the Ballpark, to your favorite bar/restaurant, to whatever neighborhood you live in. I need a minimum of 10 entries or else I’ll just give the ticket to a friend. The concert is Feb. 26 so I’ll need all entries by Feb. 20th. Obviously, I’ll be posting the photos and explanations you submit. Good luck and Godspeed. Now get cracking!

Well, I’m a huge Wilco fan and always try to catch them at the 9:30 club. They usually play a ferocious show there. So this morning a buddy of mine and I both tried to get tickets. And unbelievably we were both successful. So what that means is that I have an extra ticket to the Tuesday show. So rather than give it to one of my other friends I thought it would be fun to have a little contest over here at PoP.

So here is the contest. You are to send me your favorite photo of your favorite room/spot in your home/apt. and tell me why it is your favorite. Alternatively you can take a photo anywhere in Logan Circle, Shaw, U Street, Columbia Heights or Petworth and tell me why you like that particular spot. The better the accompanying story the better your chances of winning. Obviously I will be posting many of these photos and stories so by virtue of sending them to me you are giving me permission to publish them. I will pick a winner the first week of Feb. so get cracking! Email submissions to [email protected]
