“Dear PoP,

A few months ago, local artist Flo Anito shot her first music video at
Capital City Diner, and the video’s now up on Youtube. We’re really proud
to help support local music, and the video turned out great!”

Awesome!

“Dear PoP,

I’d like to think you have a pretty open and diverse readership. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC (GMCW) holiday show is this weekend. It’s a family friendly event!

Details after the jump. (more…)

“Were you at the Howard Theatre? Did you perform there? Were you in the audience? Waiting by the stage door? Skipping school to come to a matinée? Come to the DC Music Salon at the Watha T. Daniel Shaw Neighborhood Library on Wednesday December 8th and bring your photos, posters and memories. Dr. Bernard Demczuk, Howard Theatre Community Committee chairperson, and Blair Ruble, author of “Washington’s U. Street: A Biography” will lead an informal discussion. There will also be a screening of the documentary, “Howard Theatre: A Century In Song” and James Brown and the Famous Flames performance from the 1964 T.A.M.I. Show. The Watha T. Daniel Shaw Neighborhood Library is located at 1630 7th St NW near the Shaw/Howard University Metro Station. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

TBD’s Sommer Mathis has the scoop on the Dec. 15th opening date after attending the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board meeting this afternoon. She writes:

“A status hearing was held today on the club’s license, which was suspended indefinitely after five of the club’s employees were arrested for assault in relation to a man’s death outside of the club in October.”

We last spoke about the case on Nov. 1st, we spoke about the vigil here and here and spoke about the original incident here and here on Oct. 15th.

Do you think it makes sense that the club is allowed to reopen before the autopsy report is issued?

DC9 is located at 1940 9th Street NW.

From an email:

We recently learned that HR 57 would be moving from 14th St in Logan Circle to H St, NE. A liquor license application went up this weekend listing the exact new address – 816 H St, NE. The application says:

“NATURE OF OPERATION
New tavern with Entertainment that includes live music and cover charge. Occupancy load is 130.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Tuesday 11 am –12 am, Wednesday and Thursday 11 am – 1 am and Friday & Saturday 11 am – 2:30 am”

I can’t wait to see what it looks like on the inside.

HR 57 is located at 1610 14th Street, NW. We last spoke about them back in Jan. ’10. And we’ve said that they are one of the best spots to hear live jazz/blues and we’ve also listed them as one of the best date spots in the city.

That is why I think the news is so devastating for the Logan Circle neighborhood of 14th St, NW. It is such a unique space that can not easily be replaced. Logan Circle will obviously still thrive but removing this neighborhood gem is a punch to the gut even if it is replaced by a really good restaurant. I had heard about the possibility of a closure for a while but I sorta pushed it to the back of my head hoping it couldn’t possibly be true. I’ll be honest – I’m destroyed by this news.

The huge news was broken by City Paper Sunday afternoon:

“Tonight, however, staffers — including owner/director Tony Puesan — confirmed that the first week of January will find HR-57 relocating to a property at H and 9th Streets NE. “It’s a very nice place,” says Puesan. “It’s just in a little bit cheaper building.” The current building, which Puesan owns, is being sold.”

The author Michael J. West speculates:

“it’s a risky venture trading a Metro-accessible location in the U Street corridor’s established jazz district for a still up-and-coming neighborhood whose transit options consist of a shuttlebus and still-unfinished streetcar system.”

I think this is a huge score for the H St, NE area. Despite the concerns mentioned above, I think they will be hugely successful. Of course I haven’t seen the new space at 9th and H St, but I’m certainly looking forward to checking them out.

What do you guys think – will HR 57 thrive on H St, NE?

It was back in March when I first reported the scuttlebutt about a merger between Palace of Wonders and Red and the Black at 1210 – 1212 H St, NE. Just got an email that they’ll be launching this weekend:

“We are happy to announce, FINALLY, the opening of the Red Palace at 1210-1212 H ST NE. A combination of Palace of Wonders & the Red and the Black, the new venue will feature both sideshow, burlesque, in addition both local and national music artists. The larger, yet still very intimate space, will launch this weekend!

The first official event will be Saturday November 6 with the Dangerously Delicious Pies 8th Annual Pie and Rock-n-Roll Extravaganza with The Deadmen, Glenmont Popes, HR of Bad Brains, and Lazlo Lee and the Motherless Children. Doors @ 8pm Show @ 9pm – 18+ welcome”

If anyone checks them out be sure to shoot me an email with your impressions. I’m curious to see how the space looks.

Is it just me, or is this freaking awesome? An Ethiopian restaurant hosting a Hootenanny? Too good.

From a press release:

The Human County Jukebox, Washington D.C.’s premiere country and western band, will be performing at Axum Ethiopian Restaurant’s Level X-Lounge, 1934 9th Street, NW, on Saturday, November 6th. Doors open at 7PM, with drink specials running all night, including $4 beers and half-priced appetizers.

The Human Country Jukebox is a D.C. based, “classic” country band, playing hits by artists such as Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. Front man Jack “Big Texas” Gregori runs the Wednesday open mic night at Madams Organ, where he met the other members of the band. Local musician Clayton Halsey will open Saturday night’s show. Saturday is a unique opportunity to enjoy the perfect combination of great country music and delicious Ethiopian food.

Axum Ethiopian Restaurant’s Level X-Lounge is located at 1934 9th Street, NW, near the U Street Metro station. The newly renovated Level X-Lounge features lounge and bar seating, as well as an Ethiopian fusion menu with American favorites such as chicken wings, burgers, and salad.
