I don’t quite get it but I couldn’t stop staring at it. Who is that supposed to be at the right? Saddam Hussein? Someone explain the mural to me, please.

I’ve seen photos of this house dozens of times. Most recently it was featured a couple of weeks ago in a Post story on outdoor murals. I’ve emailed some people to request the location and received complete silence in return. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I finally spotted it this weekend. It’s near 11th and Q. Sadly it was a little anticlimactic after looking for it for so long…

I’m not sure if this one is 100% completed but I like it, a lot.

This is a pretty brutal one, yeah? Tough week for animals over here on PoP…

Thanks to a reader for telling me about this work going on outside of Mama Ayesha’s. It looks like it is going to be phenomenal. I’ll be back when it’s fully completed. But consider this a sneak peek of sorts.

From the Columbia Heights Listserv:

“Hello,

The LAYC Art+Media House seeks outdoor walls for its summer murals
initiative. If you are tired of repainting a wall that is continuously
tagged or vandalized in other ways, than your best bet is a mural. We know
that walls with Murals not only beautify the neighborhood, but keep others
from “tagging” or vandalizing.

We will provide all materials, supplies, youth workers, and a lead artist.
Content of Mural will be pre determined and approved by both parties.

Only a few slots are available for the summer but more may become available
in the fall. So if you or your business are interested, please write us a
short one paragraph proposal. Good luck.

I couldn’t possibly pick murals of the day without ever including this beauty. Of course with its beauty it may carry a particular curse because I seem to recall the restaurant underneath seems to close every few years.  Still pretty cool how it takes up practically the whole building, yeah?

Not to be overly complimentary but this one has Mona Lisa type quality in that the eyes really grab you.
