The folks from Comcast share the good news:

“Just in time to get summer planning started, today HBO and Comcast announced that DC’s favorite outdoor movie festival, “Screen on the Green,” will be back for another season. Last year when it looked like without co-sponsors the show might not go on, there was an outpouring of support for the event on Facebook and Twitter. Comcast was proud to help save “Screen on the Green” last year and to co-sponsor it again this year.

And what a way to open the festival on the National Mall with Sean Connery in Goldfinger on July 12th, one of my favorite Bond movies. Another iconic film, Bonnie and Clyde will be this year’s last movie on August 2nd.”

The other two movies will be Neil Simon’s “The Goodbye Girl” on July 19, and “12 Angry Men” on July 26.

More from a press release including description of movies after the jump. (more…)

This film will be shown where Screen on the Green films are shown on the Mall at 4th Street NW. Ed. Note: It looks like Screen on the Green has been saved as well, I’ll share that in a separate post. In the meantime, this film sounds pretty sweet.

“Kick-off summer by joining us on the National Mall the evening of Wednesday, June 9 for Washington, DC premiere of the new documentary film “Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham & the American City.” I know the event will be of interest to you and the readers of PoP. I’m able to give away 2 pairs of tickets, I’ll select two winners from the comments. Share your favorite Bruce song and/or concert and I’ll announce the winners Friday.

From the organizers:

DC’S ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 1333 H ST. NE, HOSTS TWO SCREENINGS OF THE BOSS’S FIRST OUTRDOOR CONCERT FILM EVER!

Captured in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in June, 2009 in HD, this concert film captures Bruce Springsteen, the best live rock and roll performer of his generation (and a couple of other generations as well!).

“London Calling: Live In Hyde Park” conveys both the experience of being on-stage with Bruce Springsteen and the vast crowd experience of the festival environment. Viewers are able to see Springsteen spontaneously directing the E Street Band and shaping the show as it evolves.

The set list spans from “Born To Run” era to “Working On a Dream” and includes rare covers such as The Clash’s “London Calling,” which opened the show and wowed the crowd!

“The concert earned rave reviews. The London Times called it “epic” and “a revved-up… power drive through Springsteen’s America.” Concurs The Independent, “He awed the 50,000-strong crowd… Drenched in sweat by the second number, tossing his guitars to the roadies with the vigour of a frontman a third of his age and jogging down a walkway to meet his fans and take their requests, Springsteen’s intensity was staggering from first powerful vocal to final thrashed-out chord.”

Don’t miss these two chances to rock out with the Boss! Tickets are $15 and are available at www.atlasarts.org starting May 25!”

From a press release:

Screen on the Green Will Not Return for 11th Summer without Additional Sponsorship

WASHINGTON – May 4, 2010 – The always-popular summer favorite, Screen on the Green, is in jeopardy again, unless additional funding can be secured.

Longtime Screen on the Green producer HBO and sponsor Comcast are willing to continue their support of this annual event, but have indicated that it cannot take place without an additional $75,000 – $100,000 contribution.

Screen on the Green has faced funding troubles in the past.  In 2009, it was almost discontinued when HBO decided not to continue its sponsorship. Washingtonians organized a Facebook and letter writing campaign, resulting in Comcast and the Trust for the National Mall stepping in alongside HBO to allow Screen on the Green to return for its 10th anniversary.

Screen on the Green is a remarkable free summer movie series that provides a tribute to classic films. The screenings are shown on the National Mall and attract approximately 15,000 Washingtonians and tourists during each screening, held on Monday nights from mid-July through late August, making this one of the largest community events in the District of Columbia. Past film selections include Casablanca, Rocky, On the Waterfront and Dr. No. Washington City Paper readers voted Screen on the Green first runner-up for “Best Festival” in 2009.

The effort to “Save Screen on the Green” continues this spring online, as the profile for the Facebook fan page builds at  http://www.facebook.com/savescreenonthegreen. “Save Screen on the Green” is a committee of Washingtonians and avid Screen on the Green fans who have partnered with D.C. Film Alliance to explore options to secure additional sponsors. More information is available on www.SaveScreenOnTheGreen.org. Additionally, visitors can donate funds or register to receive email updates.

This is pretty cool if you can get Thursday afternoon off work. From an email:

You are invited to a FREE screening of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo! Music Box Films and RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network) would like to Thank You for all you’ve contributed to the fight against sexual assault.

WHEN: Thursday, April 22nd at 12:45pm

WHERE: The E Street Landmark Theater in Washington, D.C.

WHY: This intelligent and suspenseful film illustrates some of the real life effects of rape, sexual abuse, and incest on victims and survivors and helps to underscore the importance of getting help. In fact, sexual violence is an extremely prevalent pattern throughout the film – and that’s why RAINN is getting involved.

Following the screening, RAINN volunteers will host a discussion of the film and its thought-provoking topics. Our hope is that this screening will serve as a template for other cities/venues to promote and lead discussions about this very important film and eventually offer a DVD & Discussion Guide package to volunteers and discussion leaders all over the nation.

TO ATTEND: Please RSVP to [email protected] and we’ll add you to the guest list. The more supporters we welcome, the better!

Thanks to a reader for sending the word:

The Capitol Riverfront BID is excited to announce its summer 2010 outdoor movie theme – Ultimate Underdogs!
We have set up a survey so people can vote for their top 10 and share suggestions.  Please find the survey HERE.

Movies will begin June 3rd on the giant 35 foot screen at the future site of Canal Park, located at 2nd Street, SE and M Street, SE.  Last year, over 300 people attended the Best of the 80s outdoor movies each week at Tingey Plaza behind USDOT.  This year we’ve moved locations to Canal Park to be closer to the Metro and accommodate more people.  You can see photos from last year’s movies on our flickr page.

It was saved last year but NBC Washington is reporting that it needs to be saved again:

“Rauch tells us that HBO — which has traditionally backed the movie event — hasn’t yet determined its 2010 budget. “Hence, our renewed effort to demonstrate how strongly the community supports and loves SOTG,” Rauch told us in an e-mail today.”

You can join the save the screen on the green facebook page here.

“Les Yeux dans les Bleus
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15
7 pm at the French Embassy
Directed by: Stephane Meunier

Les Yeux dans les Bleus is a penetrating documentary following the victorious French
team during the 1998 World Cup. With intimate access to the players, director Stephane
Meunier captures the extremes of emotion that make soccer and its characters so
compelling. He shares their rituals, their doubts, their joys, their exploits and in the end,
their conquest, as if we were with them.
FOR SECURITY REASONS, ALL ATTENDEES MUST EITHER RESERVE SEATS IN ADVANCE OR PRE-PURCHASE TICKETS.

Sons of Sakhnin United & Special Soccer Reading
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16
Events start at 7pm at Busboys and Poets
Directed by: Christopher and Alexander Browne

After becoming the first Israeli-Arab team to win the Israel State Cup in 2004, BNei Sakhnin comes under added pressure. This intense documentary follows the team, based in a small Arab town in northern Israel,as it struggles to survive in the Israeli Premier League amid the ethnic tensions that plague the country.
Unsentimental and careful, Sons of Sakhnin United focuses its lens on both sides of the divide, and does its best to show how the action on the field can transcend the events off it. When Sakhnin captain Abbas Suan is called into the Israeli National Team for an important match against Ireland, the tension is palpable, the outcome bittersweet.
The film will be introduced by director Christopher Browne.”
