31st and O Street, NW via Christ Church Georgetown

From the DC Department of Health Sunday 5:09am:

“As DC Health conducts its review of the presumptive positives of COVID-19 and consults with the CDC, it has determined an individual’s visitation to Christ Church Georgetown warrants precautionary measures. Out of an abundance of caution, DC Health is recommending a temporarily pause of services at Christ Church Georgetown. We are currently conducting an intensive investigation to identify any exposures to COVID-19 that may have occurred at the church. DC Health will reach out to potentially impacted congregants and visitors as we continue to gather to more information to ensure the health and safety of the public.”

From Christ Church Georgetown:

“Christ Church, Georgetown, is a historic and vibrant community of faith in the heart of the nation’s capital. For 200 years, the people of Christ Church have sought to be a body through which the light of Christ is seen and his work is done.”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, the DC Department of Health (DC Health) announced the District’s first presumptive positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The person has no prior history of travel outside the United States. DC Health is coordinating closely with the health team where this person is currently being treated and all infection control protocols are being followed. While this is first case in the District, there is still no widespread community transmission and the general level of risk for residents is low. (more…)

Could be something. Could be nothing. This morning a reader sent us the map above: “One self-reported positive case of COVID-19 in Scott Circle. Keep calm and wash your damn hands…as the experts say.”

Update from a reader: “I think that dot its actually the geographic center of DC… If you look at MoCo the dot is in the middle too. However, the app does show a self-reported case at 3500 block of International Place, NW (actually gives address)”

The map is from an app by HealthLynked Corp.. The reader says that the app is being used by some Georgetown graduate students to “decide where to travel. We now are being asked to report any travel (even domestic) to our Dean.” The self reported case HAS NOT been reported by DC’s official website (though that site says as of 9:43am 1 result is still pending out of 9 patients monitored by DC Health), WHO or CDC. Could be something or could be nothing. Updates if any official confirmation or negative result is released. As OP says, don’t freak out and definitely wash your hands.

Ummm, thanks to Mathew for passing on from Sean: “Coronavirus supply store???”

After looking inside, I can’t tell if this is like the “microscope store”, straight up art, straight up entrepreneurial (ie selling cold water on a hot day) or straight up bat shit crazy. I guess we gotta find out the prices…

I wanted to follow up on yesterday’s announcement from the Mayor’s Office that “DC Health Department Confirms No Coronavirus Cases in DC” I saw many people resigned to the fact that it would still likely hit D.C. in some way at some point. No kidding around lots of good info on COVID-19 here. For those who feel it’s coming our way – are you doing any preparations? If so, what are you doing?

To the polls:

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser has directed her Administration’s agencies to monitor developments related to the coronavirus occurring across the globe and in the United States. DC Health has confirmed that there are no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Washington, DC and that the risk of coronavirus remains low. As with any public health concern, Mayor Bowser is encouraging residents to be prepared and informed. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have plans to travel in the next few months and need to get some vaccines like Yellow Fever for some upcoming travels. I’m hoping the community can chime in as I know a lot of people in the DC area travel for work and pleasure to places that need these shots. I’m looking for recommendations for travel clinics or doctors, ideally downtown, that are knowledgeable, won’t try to over-medicate me and also won’t break the bank for shots like Yellow Fever and a prescription for malaria pills.”

Thanks to Rafe for sending from DOH:

“The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) has confirmed one death associated with vaping. As of October 22, 2019, 1,604* cases of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI) have been reported to CDC from 49 states (all except Alaska), the District of Columbia, and 1 U.S. territory.

DC Health urges District residents to refrain from using all e-cigarette and vaping products until further notice. Cannabis or THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) vape-products that are obtained off the street may pose the greatest risk.

“Dear PoPville,

I just saw an article on NPR about an alternative to allergy shots called sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT, that you take at home as a tablet, instead of getting allergy shots in an office.

Apparently it has been around a few years and is effective. That said, I am having a hard time finding a DC/MD area practice that offers this in lieu of allergy shots and will let you do it from home (the one area website I found discussing this referenced taking the tablets in their office). Given the main benefit would be avoiding weekly visits to the allergist, I was hoping someone knows a practice that lets you take the tablets at home and could provide a good recommendation!

Bonus points for the practice being in network with BlueCross.”
