On Monday we learned that an Ace Hardware would be taking over the former CVS space at 2616 Connecticut Ave, NW. From a press release:

Ace Hardware signed a lease Thursday, June 21 and is set to open mid-August 2012 at 2616 Connecticut Avenue in the former CVS space.

Woodley Park Ace is the sixth D.C. metro location for local entrepreneurs Gina Schaefer and Marc Friedman – the couple has three more stores in Baltimore that round out their retail group known as “A Few Cool Hardware Stores.” The 3,800-square-foot space will be built out using Ace’s new “express” model, which caters to stores that are less than 4,000 square feet.

It’s a perfect fit for the smaller storefronts along this section of Connecticut Ave. “For years, residents have asked us to open in Woodley Park, but it was never a good match for Ace’s typical urban store model, which requires a larger footprint,” said Schaefer, who first opened Logan Hardware in 2003. “We know the new model and the location’s proximity to metro and bus lines will be perfect for this bustling community. Neighbors can pop in on their way to and from work and quickly get what they need.”

The size won’t hinder the group’s product offering, which caters to customers looking for a little bit of everything. The store will house more than 20,000 products, including basic hardware, lawn & garden, plumbing, patio furniture & grills, pet supplies, and more. Customers will also benefit from a menu of specialty services like key cutting, tool rentals, paint matching and blade sharpening. Like all of the “cool hardware stores,” Woodley Park Ace hopes to become the community’s home-maintenance hub.

“We can’t wait to join the other businesses on Connecticut Ave. and meet all of our new residential neighbors and, of course, their dogs!” Schaefer said, noting that Woodley Park Ace is a dog-friendly establishment.

Back in April the CVS Shuffle occurred when CVS moved from 2616 Connecticut Ave, NW to corner of Connecticut and Calvert Street. Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up about an Ace Hardware moving into the former CVS space at 2616 Connecticut Ave, NW next to McDonald’s. According to their Website:

“We’re looking to open the doors mid-August

2311 Calvert St, NW

From the owners:

We are showing all the games for the Euro Cup and we are having a special – if Italy wins a game we will buy every customer a free glass of wine (the day the game is played) and if Italy loses the game we will buy every customer 2 glasses of wine (assuming the customer is 21 or over of course)

Awesome!

Cafe Sorriso recently opened up at 2311 Calvert St, NW in Woodley Park.

Italy plays Croatia today at noon.

Back in Nov. 2011 we learned Cafe Sorriso was coming to 2311 Calvert St, NW in the former House of Philly pizza spot in Woodley Park.

“New restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner specializing in homemade gelato, deserts, and coffees. Recorded music. Occupancy load is 49. Sidewalk Cafe has 20 seats.”

Cafe Sorriso is from the same folks who run Sorriso up in Cleveland Park at 3518 Connecticut Ave, NW. Looks like the new Gelateria (ed. note: what an awesome word) getting close to opening:

Cafe Sorriso will be located between the new CVS and Afghan Grill on Calvert just east of Connecticut Ave, NW.

I also heard one more piece of interesting info while I was checking the spot. The upstairs might become a consignment store. Stay tuned.

Yesterday afternoon we noted that the zoo closed early and crowds temporarily overwhelmed the Woodley Park metro. At the time the official response from the National Zoo on twitter was:

“We closed at 5 pm today due to capacity spring crowds. Parking is difficult this time of year, so take Metro if you’re able!”

Last night a PoPville follower tweeted that she thought the closure was because of the fight. This morning I saw a comment from Bossi with a link to his photos and tweets about the fight. He notes 4 fights before the closure:

“Fight 4 stopped when 1 girl pulls an orange-tipped toy gun. Guess it’s good that it’s a fake, but really: you pull an orange tip in a fight?”

If the zoo closed as a result of fights why would not just say it closed because of fights?

Unfortunately violence at the zoo is not completely uncommon this time of year. Last year on April 25th, 2011 the zoo closed as a result of a stabbing. And in April 2000 there was a shooting at the Zoo.
