Bar Pilar is located at 1833 14th St, NW (south of T street). Anyone who has spent time at Bar Pilar on a Friday or Saturday night will recognize that an expansion would provide some needed breathing room. Personally I think it would be great.

According to a liquor license amendment recently posted out front, the:

“LICENSEE REQUESTS EXPANSION OF PREMISE TO INCLUDE 2ND FLOOR FOR 46 ADDITIONAL SEATS”

Their Web site reminds me:

“Every Tuesday night from 5pm – 11pm our chefs prepare a home style meal inspired by different cultures. From rustic French to American picnic food, come discover our home cooking with your friends and you’ll be sure to leave happy. Each week he creates a menu based on the freshest produces available to him that week. No future menus have yet been established. The theme is usually announced each week a couple days in advance of the event.”

You can see their regular menu here.

And on a side note while looking upstairs I was reminded of their awesome art deco numbers:

As well as some awesome sculptures:

Back in Nov. we learned that Gori Cafe was becoming V Street Cafe at 1113 V Street, NW. I finally got a chance to peek inside and talk with the owners. In addition to opening up in around 2 weeks, the owners also mentioned that there would be free wifi, coffee and sandwiches at first with the possibility of beer and wine later on. It’s a small space but they will open up a back garden section when the weather warms up. In the meantime this looks like it’ll be a nice place to study, read and/or catch a cup of coffee.

We first heard the rumor back in July but I’ve noticed work is still ongoing at the former Brown Sugar restaurant and adjacent spaces next to Pinz-n-Needlz Tattoo on the 900 block of U St, NW by Vermont Ave. [Sadly, the Brown Sugar sign has been removed.] If the scuttlebutt is true that a Sweet Mango (Jamaican Jerk Chicken) could be opening a 2nd location here, I wonder how the recent fire at the Petworth location will affect the timeline. The Petworth location at the corner of New Hampshire and Georgia Ave remains closed will repairs are made. More info as it becomes available.

Now that proper construction has started at what will become the Brixton at 9th and U St, NW and next door at 903 U St, NW Dickson wine seems to be doing well – I’m psyched to see the former copy resource center building potentially get fixed up. Looks like a lot of work is required but that section of U St, NW has some serious potential. I’ll give them a year before any horse’s ass award nominations…

Thanks to all who sent links to updates. I’m not even gonna pretend to understand what’s going on here. TBD writes:

The Office of the U.S. Attorney for D.C. has just released a statement on the medical examiner’s findings — no move to re-file charges at this time, but they “intend to carefully study these conclusions as part of our legal analysis of this tragic incident.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has confirmed that the manner of death was a homicide, and the cause described like this: Excited Delirium Associated With Arrhythmogenic Cardiac Anomalies, Alcohol Intoxication and Physical Exertion With Restraint.

DC 9 reopened this past Friday.

You can see some background on the incident here.

Anyone want to speculate what’s going to happen?

This 2 bed/1.5 bath is going for $322,900 ($212 monthly condo fee). This seems like a really good deal – am I missing something?

“Dear PoP,

You should really check out this new place fast gourmet. I think they’ve been open about a month now. I walked by the gas station pretty much everyday without knowing there’s actually good food inside. I checked it out after reading about it online, and its really delicious, one of the best cuban sandwiches i’ve ever had. They also have rotisseree chicken, salads, and a pretty big menu for being in such an odd location. The owners are from south america and its clear they really care about the quality of the food they’re serving. They couldn’t be nicer, and I’m worried that business is really slow because of the odd location. I probably walked by it dozens of times without knowing what’s in there. Its also open 24 hours on friday and saturday. I’m not connected with them in any way, I just think its a shame that they don’t have much business since they’re such nice guys who do good work.”

We noted their opening back in August and I’ve been hearing great things about their food ever since. A friend of mine has been preaching their awesomeness for weeks to me. I stopped in on Sat. to snap some photos and indeed the folks were super nice. Also every patron had a gigantic smile on their face. I’ll be honest, I never would’ve guessed this would happen in a commercial space of a gas station. But mad props to them for pulling this off.

Their Web site says:

“You’ll find that not only do we serve high quality food but we’re an eco friendly business as well with our sustainable natural free trade coffee from around the world, natural fruit juices, organic bread and our environmentally friendly to-go containers. You’ll be glad to know that we don’t serve processed food.

Everything is prepared fresh daily at your request by our chef. Free WIFI, hip ambiance and sharp service. We also deliver!”

You can see their full menu here. They are located at the corner of 14th st and W St. NW. Anyone else check them out yet?
