Thanks to a reader for sending the photo and word that:

“Not sure it this means actual progress, but they are replacing the roof at 14th and V.”

Back in Sept. ’10 we had learned that a new Tex Mex restaurant, La Fonda, had applied for a liquor license at the old AM PM carryout at 14th and V St, NW. La Fonda was going to be a:

“New Mexican restaurant offering “Tex-Mex” styled cuisine with live entertainment featuring a single musician and karaoke. Seating capacity is 220. Total occupancy load is 332. Sidewalk Café with seating for 48.”

Sadly, it appeared the deal fell through as there was little sign of progress on the building. Great to see work starting. It’ll be interesting to see if this means La Fonda is back on board or if someone else will be coming into the space. Stay tuned.

July 2010

Lost Society opened up back in June ’11 at the corner of 14th and U St, NW. You can see their menus here. So I’m curious what folks think of this spot all around. In addition to dinner has anyone checked it out for brunch? What do you think of it just as a spot to get a drink?

Dear PoPville,

I was walking home tonight down 14th Street and there were two men from the US Postal Inspection Service outside the Post Office handing out fliers. There’s a reward of up to $50,000 for anyone with information about yesterday’s robbery [Dec. 1st]. Here’s the info from the flier:

Suspect: Black male, approx. 6’0″, slender build, wearing all dark clothing, with long sleeves, gloves, and pants tucked into black combat type boots. The suspect’s face was covered, and he was armed with a handgun. The robbery occurred approximately 6:30 pm on December 1st, 2011.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact the US Postal Inspection Service at 202-636-1479 to leave a message or email [email protected]. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

This “Unique/Petite Rowhouse” is going for $2150.

“Dear PoP,

Walked past the post office on 17th and T earlier tonight around 8pm and it was blocked of with police tape and heavy police presence. Walked by after dinner at 10:50 and still blocked off. Found out from TV cameraman a postal worker had been robbed and locked in the back of his truck around 6:30.”

Thanks to all who sent emails and tweets about this crazy incident. Another reader tweeted:

“Postal worker robbed and locked in truck for 20 minutes . Not hurt.”

You can follow PoPville on twitter here.

NBC Washington reports:

“The worker was leaving the T Street Post Office at 14th and Wallach about 6:30 p.m. putting mail and the day’s proceeds in a postal truck when he was approached by a gunman. The gunman demanded the mail and money and locked the worker in the back of the truck.”

While we admired the new green paint job at Bar Pilar (1833 14th St, NW) a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea they’d be closing soon for the planned renovations into the 2nd floor. The Washington Post shared the word:

“Bar Pilar will close after this Sunday, Nov. 27, to allow construction work to begin on its long-planned second floor restaurant and bar, including the addition of a staircase in what is now the dining room. The closure will be indefinite, depending on how smoothly construction goes. Management hopes to reopen in time for New Year’s Eve.”

They also remind us that Standard (14th and S St, NW) only has 6 more days until they close for the Winter.

Thanks to all who sent emails yesterday. Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that:

“When completed, the building will be seven stories and will offer 125 sleek condominium residences.”

Following are the new plans sent by JBG:

“We are very excited about a new direction we are taking to better meet the demands of this burgeoning neighborhood. Since launching the project, we have continued to assess the residential market in the Washington, D.C. area and in the Logan Circle neighborhood. The building is on course for delivery in the fall of 2012, and we have decided to launch the project as a boutique apartment building rather than a condominium building as originally conceived. We believe this new building will be an excellent compliment for the neighborhood and the community, and is an affirmation of the strength of the apartment market in D.C.

While we have received significant interest in the condominium residences we are very excited for the apartment building, which will be called The District. The building will have all of the same features, amenities and level of finishes as previously planned: a lobby lounge, fitness center and extensive rooftop terrace. Residence features will include floor-to-ceiling glass, hardwood floors, beautiful European cabinetry, and expansive private balconies and terraces. An elaborate rooftop terrace amenity area will feature outdoor living rooms, an outdoor kitchen and bar, a fire pit, water feature and a sundeck.”
