4619 41st Street, NW

A restaurant called Fork and Spade is coming to the retail space of the new building at 4619 41st Street, NW next to the Dancing Crab in Tenleytown. A recent liquor license posted says Fork ‘n Spade will be a:

“New Restaurant serving American cuisine with various types of live music, DJ, and dancing. Seating is 150. Total occupancy load is 200. Sidewalk Café with approximately 40 seats.”

Their Website says:

The Fork & Spade will be farm-to-table establishment offering innovative American Cuisine with a twist. Our mission is to provide quality, delicious, local, fresh food to the DC Metro Area. We want to bring the area’s best products, raised and grown at local farms, directly to our customers. We plan on doing this three ways; first with a food truck that can hit the roads and literally deliver our food to the community, next by establishing a temporary pop-up restaurant in our brick and mortar space so that we can serve our neighbors as soon as possible, and finally by opening the completed space at 4619 41st Street, NW that will seat approximately 150 guests and serve both lunch and dinner seven days a week. During the summer months there will be additional seating outside on our patio. The Fork & Spade will be a family friendly restaurant that, as our name suggests, will remind our customers of the synergy between the dinner table and the farm.

Culinary Institute of America graduates and Executive Chefs, Alexander Bous, and his fiancee Renee Straus, and Executive Sous Chef Robert Cain, adopt a humble approach to educating guests through delicious food, wine, beer and spirits in a communal environment. Boasting high quality local food and unique menu design, the Fork & Spade will be an elegant yet approachable New American restaurant with regionally influenced plates and beverages in a family friendly atmosphere. Our bar will offer a generous selection of wines and beers by the glass as well as wine and beer flights, non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails that encourage our guests to experience and explore new flavors and sensations.

Ultimately, we will strive to strengthen the bonds of community between farmers, chefs, and our customers by feeding them deliciously prepared, high quality, local food. We are committed to conducting and promoting sustainable business practices on a local, national, and global level. We hope to make our internal community a positive influence on our external community and we believe that by offering our guests a night out that is highly enjoyable and educational, we will create an experience unlike any other. This experience, along with an attractive offering of unique beverages and creative seasonal menus, we believe, is what ‘dinning out’ should be about.

Cava Grill opens in the former Ayzen/Chanya Thai restaurant space in Tenleytown. Get a free lunch for the grand opening on Thursday, and donate to Micro Greens DC. I stopped in for photos on Monday and was amazed at how great the place turned out.

From a press release:

To celebrate the opening of its newest location, Cava Grill will offer Tenleytown customers a free pita, bowl, salad, or minis and a fountain drink from 11am – 1:30pm on Thursday, October 4th. Local beverage company, Honest Tea will be on hand with free samples of their organic drinks. Through the Free Lunch Day, voluntary donations will be accepted and go directly to Micro Greens DC. Founded by American University Graduate and Chef Allison Sosna, Micro Greens DC teaches underprivileged kids to cook affordable, healthy meals based on a SNAP budget.

The new grill is conveniently located at 4237 Wisconsin Ave in northwest Washington DC. Cava Grill provides a quick healthy option for residents, area office workers, students of American University and local schools.

Located at 4237 Wisconsin Ave, the 2,400 sq. ft. Tenleytown location includes a large deck for outdoor seating and will serve beer and wine once the existing liquor license transfer is complete. Xenohristos, along with partners Ike Grigoropoulos, Dimitri Moshovitis, and Brett Schulman plan to continue expanding Cava Grill, opening several outlets in the Washington, D.C., metro area, as appropriate locations become available.

The new space looks amazing. I particularly like the open wood beams:

And the outdoor patio looks like it’ll be fantastic:

Back in Feb. we saw Blue Moo was coming to the former Marvelous Market space at 4530 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Glad to see they opened.

Their Web site says:

Welcome to Bloo Moo Premium Frozen Yogurt Shop! We serve only the best of the best of frozen yogurts and toppings. All of our yogurts are labeled with the LAC seal. LAC stands for Live and Active Cultures, which means that all of our frozen yogurts contain at least 10 million cultures per gram! There are many benefits of live and active cultures.

Scientific research shows that the live and active cultures found in yogurt may offer many more health attributes, on top of the great nutrition basics. Researchers are exploring how live and active culture yogurt may have a beneficial effect on the immune system, the potential to lower cholesterol, and how it may help combat certain types of cancer-causing compounds, particularly in the digestive track. Few foods help meet your nutritional needs at every stage of life better than live and active culture yogurt. And because it comes in so many flavors and varieties, yogurt appeals to every member of the family!

NBC Washington reports:

“The original location of a longtime D.C. fave, Armand’s Pizzeria, will close its doors June 30, News4’s Shomari Stone first reported.

At this point, the six other locations will stay open, but it would cost $200,000 to keep the historic flagship location running.”

Armand’s Web site says:

Welcome to Lew Newmyer’s original Armand’s Chicago Pizzeria. Back in 1969 Lew Newmyer, inspired by his youth spent in Atlantic City, opened a sub and sandwich shop in Washington DC. In 1975, Lew, after traveling to Chicago experienced deep dish pizza. At that time no one in the DC area offered deep dish Chicago style pizza. Lew and his sons spent months working closely with many people in developing their own dough and sauce recipe.

Today, over twenty five years later, that recipe and Armand’s expanded menu offerings are famous and still growing. A perennial Washingtonian Magazine award winner for “Best Pizza”.

With eleven area locations including full service restaurants, party rooms and Express Delivery stores, Armand’s continues to be a Washington area favorite. Our unique recipes and friendly staff are what truly make the Armand’s experience great!

Any fans of Armand’s?

Tanad Thai is located at 4912 Wisconsin Ave, NW. In Jan. 2012 we noted that there was a lot of love for 4912 Thai which was closed after it’s retail license was suspended.
