Think this 2 bed/1.5 bath will go for $360,000 ($160 condo fee)?

Back in late Dec. I noted that there was some movement at the old EFN Lounge space at 1318 9th St, NW. At the time a commenter said: “I’m a neighbor to 1318 9th. I talked to the woman who bought/leased the building. It is going to be a restaurant bar called Mood and is scheduled for a New Year’s Eve opening.” Clearly they didn’t make a New Year’s opening but I just noticed a new awning went up. Anyone hear anything else about this new space?

I’ve said it before and I know I always post about negative crime news but it should be noted (from time to time) that good work is also being done by MPD. I’m not saying we shouldn’t still be frustrated by the recent crime stories but there are a lot of good MPD officers out there and they deserve some props in cases like this:

This morning [Tues.] at approximately 8:00 am officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 600 block of Q St, NW. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect and were able to locate the suspect and place him under arrest.

If anyone has any additional information about this robbery please contact Detective Jeffrey Bruce of the Third District Detective’s Office at 202 673-6918.

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up that this former beauty is currently getting fixed up. I’m not sure if it’ll be split into condos/apartments or a single family residence. But I’ll be sure to update as the renovation progresses.

I once noted that the looking at the basement apartment sign could instantly transport you back in time, so for posterity here it is one more time before it gets removed:

It’ll be great to see these awesome details come back to life:

For my first posting of the new year, I’m happy to review this recently settled sale in a neighborhood that has not seen much Good Deal or Not (GDoN) action. As was mentioned among the comments to the original GDoN post, the surrounding area has experienced tremendous development activity in the past few years. It’s worth considering that it has only been a very short while that nearby Chinatown has become, for better or worse, full of (non-Chinese) restaurants and stores that attract lots of people. Several large scale new construction condo projects sprung up in this area during the boom years, including Yale Lofts, Madrigal Lofts and its sister building, The Sonata. Some nearby projects that initially sold well pre-construction, fell victim to the shift in the real estate market and became high end rental buildings. The Sexy Safeway and Busboys and Poets opened up three blocks away. The (I will probably always call it New) Convention Center and associated Metro stop are a couple of blocks away.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

2010 9th St, NW has undergone a few openings and closings over the years and is now slated to become Ghion. According to a recent liquor license application the space will become a:

“Cuisines consist of American, Ethiopian and Italian dishes. Music will consist of traditionally soft Ethiopian and Jazz music. No other goods or services will be provided. Seating capacity is 20. Total occupancy load is 20.”

I’ll update again when they open up.

From a press release:

In an article praising the innovative civic buildings opened in 2010, The Wall Street Journal named the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library as one of the year’s best.

The article listed the library along with the MIT Media Lab and Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Journal noted that the library’s architecture is part of national trend that, “says much about the priorities and the programs going on inside libraries, where media-related services, community meeting spaces and teen rooms are becoming the norm as the former safe havens for books and bookworms turn themselves into interactive civic centers.”

Designed by the architect firm of Davis Brody Bond Aedas, the new Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library is approximately 22,000 square feet and features space for 80,000 books, DVDs, CDs and other library materials; 32 public access computers with free Wi-Fi Internet access; comfortable seating for 200 customers; a large programming room for up to 100 people; two conference rooms; and a vending area.

Back in Nov. we learned that Gori Cafe was becoming V Street Cafe at 1113 V Street, NW. I finally got a chance to peek inside and talk with the owners. In addition to opening up in around 2 weeks, the owners also mentioned that there would be free wifi, coffee and sandwiches at first with the possibility of beer and wine later on. It’s a small space but they will open up a back garden section when the weather warms up. In the meantime this looks like it’ll be a nice place to study, read and/or catch a cup of coffee.
