The Capital City Diner closed in late Jan. 2012 and was listed for sale on ebay in early March. Yesterday, the Post reported:

“owner Matt Ashburn says he’s close to a deal to sell the historic diner to a group that would keep it in the District — apparently not far from its original site in the Trinidad neighborhood.”

I suppose Trinidad isn’t too far from Petworth/Columbia Heights once the extensive Streetcar grid is in place. Anyway, a reader sends word of potentially life altering news, for me, about the new location. And perhaps, for some, even better than the new location is the new vision – “Kosher-style Jewish deli sandwiches” and “a rooftop outdoor patio featuring a tiki bar”!

Check out this Craigslist ad Cooks, servers, manager wanted for 24hr diner (Petworth/Columbia Hgts):

“EXPERIENCED SERVERS & COOKS!!!!! New 24 hour diner being moved to Columbia Heights/Petworth seeking experienced cooks & servers for all shifts / full or part time. We purchased a classic silver diner car will move it to the CoHi/Petowoth area. We plan to be open by August 1, and are seeking experienced persons to help open this exciting venture.

We plan to seat appx 75, with a rooftop outdoor patio featuring a tiki bar. Food will be classic diner fare, with Asian fusion. Menu will prominently feature Kosher-style Jewish deli sandwiches, with bread baked fresh every morning.”

Another Passover/Easter miracle in the making?

New Plantings on the South Lawn.

From the folks at Lincoln’s Cottage:

“On March 31st, President Lincoln’s Cottage, on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, held a preservation day event made possible by Penn Mutual. 70 Penn Mutual volunteers came out to perform an array of projects including laying sod, painting, waxing, paving, mulching, and the planting of long blooming native plants. Veterans from the Home were invited to watch the work and enjoy refreshments and snacks on the South Lawn of the Cottage. Additionally, volunteers prepared and dispersed 250 gift bags to the veterans throughout the Armed Forces Retirement Home.”

Nice!

President Lincoln’s Cottage Director Erin Carlson mast thanks volunteers.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the Floridano food truck opening a brick and mortar restaurant in the former Brown’s Caribbean Bakery at 3301 Georgia Ave, NW. Some readers were saddened by the closing of Brown’s but I had thought they reopened further up north on Georgia Ave. Turns out I was off by a letter. There is a Crown Caribbean Bakery located at 5409 Georgia Ave, NW. So for those who are craving some Caribbean pastries – this will probably scratch that itch.

Dear PoPville,

So I got a chance to check out 3 Little Pigs at their Petworth location (5111 Georgia Ave, NW) on opening day and it was adorably CUTE! They offered barbeque chiccarones (pork rinds) for those of us waiting to be served. The Executive Chef from Rosa Mexicana was standing next to me and we chatted away about what to get. Another guy was buying the proscuitto being cut by the owner in the picture. Based on their recommendation, I bought duck confit for dinner and when I got it home and cooked it the response from my fiance was “I want to marry the guy who sold you this duck!” If that’s not a huge endorsement I don’t know what else is. I’m so happy they’ve come to my neighborhood and I will be getting my fresh meat there every weekend.

A reader nominates the building home to the former Goins restaurant at the corner of Shepherd and Georgia Ave, NW. They write:

“The building at the SW corner of Shepherd and Georgia. Who even owns that thing? One of the large, metal gutters actually came off the building at one point– looked like a pretty big safety hazard. Someone broke a window a while back and it took a week for it to get plywooded up.”

A few weeks ago I said this liquor store was gonna be ridiculously awesome. Well, there is no doubt about it, this liquor store is ridiculously awesome. It soft opened on Saturday and this coming Friday will be its grand opening. The owner, Mr. Lee, did not spare any detail. Take for example, the lion sculpture outside, it was specifically imported from Tibet:

But the real excitement is, of course, with the store itself. People who remember the old store will be dumbfounded. This transformation is nothing less than spectacular:

It’s easy to overlook all the awesome – but check out the ceilings when you stop by:

And of course they also have an awesome selection of wine, beer and liquor. The back of the store is ringed with beer:

And while the store was less than half stocked for the soft opening, you can tell the wine selection is gonna be equally awesome taking up the bulk of the store:

And this is just the beginning for Mr. Lee’s plans. While the store itself is huge you’re actually only seeing a fraction of the building. Mr. Lee was kind enough to give me a tour of the rest of the building and explain his vision for part two. Part two will have a wine bar, sushi bar, Korean style grill and much much more. You have to trust me on the space, consisting of two floors – it is gigantic. Planning for part two will take place this summer and it’ll probably be another year before it’s completed so we’ll def. revisit as plans progress.

In the meantime – be sure to check out one of the best new wine, beer, and liquor stores in the town.

From the original Good Deal or Not (GDoN) comments: “I hope it goes for asking (as I said, I live near by) but think it will go for below. I imagine upper 500′s, but I’ll treat myself to some bubbly if they get over 600.” Go for it, blazing sun.

This property was renovated by John Formant, real estate broker and experienced developer (of both fee simple homes and entire condo projects). I am a fan of his work, which is a pleasure to show and to sell. He tends to use higher quality materials than some builders who renovate specifically with re-sale in mind, and he thinks carefully through the space.
