Sweet! And so it continues. The long vacant Louisiana Gumbo Express space across the street from Hitching Post and near Slash Run has finally been bought. Sadly, Louisiana Gumbo Express is not coming back but there are awesome short term plans and who knows what’s up for the long term.  But the short term does sound like an awesome addition to the strip – a note from DC Treasure’s owner Noah: (more…)

Daytime Burglaries in SE Petworth

“Our house was burglarized yesterday at 9:36 am. The intruders climbed through a small alley-facing window into our carport and then kicked in our basement door. They took a 50″ TV and a laptop. Luckily, our alarm was set and they did not enter the main part of the house.

The security company immediately called the police, who arrived 7 minutes after the alarm went off. The thieves were long gone, but the DC police who arrived were professional and very thorough – from the K9 unit to the responding officers to the crime scene officer who pulled prints. With all the negative press for law enforcement lately, I just wanted to highlight our positive (well, as positive as it could be given the circumstances) experience with DC Police.

Unfortunately, we learned we were the third daytime burglary in the past couple of months in our particular alley. Neighbors noticed a suspicious black sedan with 2 men parked in the alley outside our house. If you live on the alley bordered by Rock Creek Church/Shepherd/Illinois/4th St NW, be sure to secure your basement entry points. All the burglaries involved kicking in a basement door, prying open a small basement window, or taking a basement door off its hinges.”

Another reader sends via email:

“Just a heads up for folks living in the Shaw area around 5th St & Q St, early this morning at 2.00AM I woke up to the sound of someone trying to break in to my back yard. I heard what seemed like metal being pounded by an object of some sort. We have a fairly tall 9ft roll up gate which would make it pretty difficult to break in but when I looked out from the window (our bedroom faces the back yard) I saw a guy with a flashlight trying to open our neighbor’s gate. I immediately called the MPD who responded in about 5 minutes. Two officers came through the alley on foot but the guy was gone by then. Please double check that you have locked your doors, people!”

“Dear PoPville,

There is an ongoing noise violation behind the South Side of Quebec Place near the Raymond Rec Center. My neighbors and I have been working for months to try to get the District to address the 73 decibel cooling unit that intermittently spews noise into our homes and onto our back alley. Representatives from DGS at last said that they are working to resolve the problem, but communication has been poor and we have been asking for Councilman Todd’s office to help since early July. Has anyone had success getting Mr. Todd’s office to lead on problems like this? If so, what did it take?”

From their website:

“What IS Guerrilla Goodness you ask?

Guerrilla Goodness is intentional, anonymous acts of kindness performed in playful, creative ways for strangers, friends, and family.

It is the power of kindness and joy coming alive for all involved, both the giver and recipient. It’s discovering something about yourself and the world that changes everything, it is about believing and standing in kindness.

Guerrilla goodness is dropping flowers on strangers’ doorsteps, chalking up sidewalks outside of schools with good wishes on the first day of school, leaving quarters in all the gumball machines in town, slipping starbucks gift cards into books at the library for the next reader to find.

I like to think it is where strangers and kindness meet to play!”

A reader reports at 7:30pm:

“Some kid, probably 17 – 20 years old just got shot on the 1200 block of Crittenden Street NW. I just happened to be walking south down Georgia Ave from the bus stop when the police swarmed the block. I counted 7 cars, 2 bike cops, 1 police motorcycle, 2 white shirts, and fire/ems both on the scene. The police told the crowd all they heard was a guy got shot, but is going to live. They just put the kid on the stretcher and wheeled him into the ambulance. Looks like he got shot in the front of his neck. He was conscious and looking around. This has to stop.”

Confirmed:

“MPD is on the scene of a shooting in the 1200 block of Crittenden St. NW. No look out”

Update from MPD:

“On Friday, August 29 around 6:45 PM in the 1200 block of Crittenden Street, NW, MPD responded to the call for a shooting. Located was a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The injury sustained by the victim is non life threatening. There is no available lookout for the suspect at this time.”

Thanks to a reader for passing from NBC Washington:

“Riyad Market at 800 Upshur St. NW was caught in October 2014 with more than 500 packets of illegal synthetic drugs, the AG said.

The store must vacate the property before November 13, as part of a court settlement, Attorney General Karl Racine announced Thursday. If the store owner stays, the property owners can have them evicted.”

Ed. Note: A prime property that could further add to the revitalization of the 800 block of Upshur St, NW. Looking forward to hearing who the new lessee will be.
