“I’m writing in to report a shooting in the 3600 block of Warder, between Princeton and Quebec, last night. I crashed early and apparently slept through it, but a policeman came to my door at 7:00 this morning and told me that a woman was shot late last night (I’m not sure if she survived or not). The whole block is currently taped off, and police are investigating.”

Has anyone heard any more details?

Demolition begins this week on the old Bruce-Monroe School (not to be mistaken with the old Bruce School located at Sherman and Kenyon) located at Georgia Ave between Columbia Rd. and Irving St. The building is gigantic. And from what I hear from folks who live near by they are pretty excited about the demo. I hear that it was a high crime area due to the hidden view from the street:

DC MUD reports:

“According to ODMPED Communications Director Sean Madigan, the Mayor’s office will issue an RFP “in the next few weeks” to select a developer to turn the 119,000-s.f. site into what “could include new housing and retail on the site as well as a new school.”

More photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I noticed this morning the construction next to Eat More Fried Chicken. Do you know what is happening there?”

The location next to Eat More Fried Chicken, is going to become a hair salon.

And perhaps in more exciting news:

I chatted with a worker at the space being renovated at 3501 Georgia Ave., NW. He told me it was going to become a coffee shop! He didn’t have any more details but I promise to keep a close eye on this one.

At 3303 Georgia Ave, a new Jamaican restaurant opened 5 or so days ago. I’m loving the sign:

Lunch Specials are $5.99 and include Curry Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, Jerk Chicken, Jerk Chicken Salad, and Jerk Sandwich. There are also appetizers and entrees. Some entrees include Curry Goat ($8.99), Brown Stew Snapper ($11.50) and some appetizers include Fried Plantains ($2.20) and Coco Bread ($1.50) of course lots more options available.

The shells on the 600 Block of Irving Street, NW are getting fixed up. There were some wild looking ones not too long ago. The house on the right looks pretty good. But I’m totally confused by the house on the left. It is only one story and does not go back very far. What’s the deal with the one on the left?

And while we’re on the block, it looks like the “Park View” is finally fixed up.

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to let you know that Park View will be getting some new alleys on the 600 block of Princeton Place, Quebec Place, and Rock Creek Church Road later this week. After years of trying to get this done (we started this process in 2005) the Mayor has followed through on his walk-thru promise made just a little over a month ago.

We had a scare when workers said they would be replacing the brick with asphalt, but per the Mayors email below they will be brick! We really owe the Mayor a great big thank you, as this is a major improvement to our neighborhood.”

From the Mayor:

“Brick alleys will be repaved with brick. Non-brick alleys will be repaved non-brick. Sorry for the miscommunication/confusion.”

Hopefully it will look as nice as this.

Tina wrote about this great organization, located at 733 Euclid Street, NW, back in September ’08. It seems they’ve had a “minor setback” (from an email):

“We had a break-in last Friday evening which has left me without a laptop or backup drive (lesson learned – don’t keep them together). There were a number of valuables taken, but nothing that really was at the heart of what we do, and for that I am grateful.

Between the losses and funds needed to secure the doors, we will have about $2,000 worth of unexpected expenses. If you would like to help out with a tax-deductible donation, we would greatly appreciate it. You can donate online at http://www.ecacollective.  Alternatively, if you would like to donate any of the following items, please contact me at (202) 462-2285.

Laptop Computer
Backup Hard Drive
Digital Camera
Digital Audio Recorder
Cordless Phone set
Power Tools (drill, jigsaw, sander)
Stereo

Fortunately, the list of things that weren’t taken is much longer. Many thanks to Jo Strowder and Dr. Ernest Quimby who jumped in with last minute loaner equipment so we wouldn’t have to cancel our children’s Summer Heritage Program today, and to those who have been helping me reconstruct the last six months.

Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sylvia”

“Dear PoP,

I noticed that this house on Newton Pl is still on the market.

It was actually a GDoN in its pre-renovated condition and was also a GDoN revisited.

I think it would be interesting for people to weigh in on it now that it’s renovated and back on the market. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t sold yet.”

This home  is located at 529 Newton Place, NW:

The flier says:

“Gorgeous renovation of Columbia Hts end unit brick row house * Gourmet kitchen with granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and ceremic tile floor * Two bedrooms and 1 full baths with new fixtures, vanity and tub surround. Gleaming wood floors * Shows great, a must see!”

More info and photos found here.

Wow, this is kinda cool. So before the reno it sold for $165,000. Now it has been renovated and can be yours for $249,955. Think that is a realistic mark up for the 2 bed/1bath?
