The Craigslist ad says:

This is a great artist space for rent with high ceilings. The space is 90 SF, 9 1/2 feet deep by 9 1/2 feet wide and 10 foot high ceilings. The space has two very large windows so there is great natural light in the studio. The studio has a storage closet to keep your paints or other supplies.

See Studio B in floor plan pictured below. The studio is on the upper level of this building pictured below and is the smaller of the two studios in the floor plan.

In the past the space has been used by a paint artist.

Electric utility is extra and the common space electric is split 3 ways between all studios, the electric tends to be minimal ($5 per month) except in the winter if you use the baseboard heat and don’t turn it off when you are not using the Studio. There is a full bathroom that is shared off the common hallway and gives water access to all.

This is not a livable space and there is no possibility of sleeping/living at this studio, the building is not zoned for this type of use.

This artists studio is yours for $300 monthly.

And on a more traditional note – does anyone have recs for a summer lease:

“Dear PoP,

My friend just finished her second year of law school at Syracuse, and she got a very last minute internship in DC. The only problem? She needs housing, stat! I recently moved out of DC, *tear*, otherwise I would have her stay with me. She will need metro access (the internship is near Dupont), and the summer internship ends most likely around the beginning of August. Obviously, the cheaper, the better. If anyone has a need for a summer roommate or knows anyone who does, please e-mail summerinternDC at gmail dot com.”

Last week we heard about a scary armed robbery in Mt. Pleasant. I’m happy to provide an update from the resident:

I’m the Mt Pleasant resident that was held up at gunpoint with my daughter and her friend on Tuesday night. I just updated the post: Friday night Detective Antoine Weston came to my house and told me they arrested the guys earlier Friday evening. The man with the gun confessed. They also had some of my property on them still. They think these are the same guys that committed the robbery on 11th.

Definite big – Props to the cops!

Back in April ’11 a reader wrote in about a beloved “Mary Poppins umbrella”. I can’t believe it – but a reader found it at the Raven over the weekend. I forwarded that message to the OP who sent the picture above and wrote:

Of course it was pouring as I walked, umbrellaless, to The Raven to track down your reader’s lead. I walked in, rain dripping from my hair, asking for my Mary Poppins umbrella. It was a check mark in the Karma column. They said everyone at The Raven had enjoyed it for a while. There were a few puppet shows… a few dances… a few intimate bartender/parrot moments. I said I was happy to have shared the joy of the Mary Poppins umbrella. Maybe someone returned it a day or two after taking it… or maybe it was there the whole time, hopping from bar stool to booth, and the few times I went back looking for it, the bartenders just didn’t really know that it was there. Regardless, I wouldn’t have gotten it back without you and your readers!

Awesome.

Thanks to all who forwarded this disturbing incident.

At 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, my daughter, a friend of hers and I were robbed at gun point by two men at the corner of Newton and Mt. Pleasant. We are all “OK,” but I am very angry and sad.

Here are the details. The three of us were walking west on the south side of Newton. As we approached the crosswalk, I noticed two men walking the same direction as us, one in front and one back to my right. The one behind grabbed me and one in front whirled around and pointed his gun at my head. They told the girls to get into the intersection and keep their eyes down or I’d “get hurt.” They emptied my pockets (cell phone, handkerchief, car and house keys, and billfold). Then they took my daughter’s friend’s purse (cell phone inside). They told us to keep our eyes down and start walking away down Newton. After we turned the corner we ran to 18th and Newton. We started shouting and a woman from Newton let us use her cell phone to call 911.

The police came in about 2 minutes. The officer drove us around Newton, Monroe, Ingleside and then south of Park, while many other police cars were also circling around. Eventually, the officer asked my daughter and her friend to go with another set of officers in their car, in order to get our statements separately. Eventually, we all got back home.

Things I’ve learned so far:
1) Neighbors are the best!

2) Beware of two guys walking the same direction as you, one behind and one ahead. The one in front slowed down and blocked us, while the one behind closed in. It’s like a squeeze play. Makes me sick.

3) Remember the robbers’ shoes. When they kept telling us to keep our eyes down I didn’t want to, but I should have used the opportunity to study and memorize their shoes. I had more time to look at their shoes than any other part of their body or clothing, but now I can only remember that the shoes were black.

4) Give away your money for a good cause. Ironically, we were walking home from a fundraiser at St. Stephen’s Church. I had given almost all my cash away.

5) Thank God for strong and calm teen girls. My daughter and her friend were thoughtful, helpful and safe. While I hated that they we were victims with me, I am also thankful for their presence and composure.

This year’s fair features artwork from seven schools and after school programs displayed in the neighborhood’s interim library and in businesses along the Mt. Pleasant St. NW commercial corridor. Student artists from pre-K through high school have created artwork in a variety of media around this year’s theme: “Springtime in Mt. Pleasant.”

The art is displayed in 11 locations, including the Mt. Pleasant Interim Library and these businesses: Mt. Pleasant Care Pharmacy, Past Tense Studio, Heller’s Bakery & Cafe, Old School Hardware, Tex-Mex Burrito, Angelico Pizzeria, Las Americas Dental Health, El Pollo Sabroso, Dos Gringos Cafe & Ice Cream Parlor, and Nana.

From a press release:

ON THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MT. PLEASANT DISTURBANCES

FIRED WORKERS, FAITH LEADERS, ADVOCATES, AND DC COUNCIL MEMBERS DELIVER OVER 7,000 PETITIONS TO CHIPOTLE DEMANDING JUSTICE FOR EMPLOYEES

Workers and Community Leaders Send Signal to Ensure Ethical Treatment of All Immigrant Workers

WASHINGTON– On Thursday, May 5, there will be a procession from the Sacred Heart Church to the Columbia Heights Chipotle Restaurant where workers were suddenly terminated over a month ago. The long term workers were fired en mass and abruptly replaced by a new crew of workers while they met with management during a 30minute break in the back store room. The workers are demanding a public apology and the payment they should have received had they been allowed time to attempt to resolve the paperwork issues cited by management as the cause for their termination.

Following a protest and press conference in late March, Chipotle management has refused twice to meet with Councilmember Graham and Mike Brown and has also refused to meet with workers if a lawyer or community leader is present. Chipotle dismissed the workers’ demands and has refused to apologize for mistreatment after one worker leader met alone with Chipotle.

On the 20th anniversary of the Mt Pleasant disturbances faith leaders, workers, advocates, and DC council members will participate in a procession to deliver over 7,000 petitions demanding justice for the workers.

“Dear PoP,

A couple of weeks ago you posted a discussion concerning some heat that came out of an ANC meeting concerning moving a loading zone in front of Haydee’s.  There’s been a lot of chat on the Mt P forum lately.  Some background on this issue:

Haydee’s wanted the creation of a loading zone in front on their restaurant on Mt P Street.  This would eliminate the loading zone on the western corner of Irving Street and move the bus stop to the other side of the block.

The ANC did not necessarily see this as a bad idea but wanted to “move ahead cautiously” to make sure the neighboring businesses were aware and OK with this change.  A couple of other neighborhood organizations agreed with this approach.

However, Haydee and Mario, the proprietors, felt gravely insulted that they couldn’t get what they wanted right away (and thus the shouting match at the ANC meeting).  After all, as seen in the past, anyone standing in their way has been deemed anti-Latino business.  The zoning committee obviously had to be anti-Latino when rejected the outdoor seating request.  It had nothing to do with the required 10-foot clearance ordinance, but was of course clear racism according to Haydee (of course to accept this conclusion forget about Don Juan’s outdoor seating).

I believe this issue is no longer about just a loading zone.  Personally, I think it’s a good idea and more businesses on this stretch would benefit for the relocation.  The issue is the way Haydee thinks she can behave, avoiding legal means to achieve her goals, and throwing out the race card to anyone standing in her way.

My question to the readers is: is it finally time to stop patronizing an establishment like this?  When is a cheap(er) margarita just not worth it?  Or should I just chalk this up to “its just business” and continue enjoying the food disregarding their methods?”

We judged Haydee’s, located at 3102 Mount Pleasant Street, NW, back in March ’09. Previously controversy erupted over the removal of a tree out front, which resulted in a new tree being planted. Haydee’s has also been the host to numerous fundraisers for those in need.
