A reader shares the letter she sent to her friends:

“I know some of you walk over around this area to work, or else just live by here, so I wanted to let you know that this am when I was walking to work down 10th street, there were a number of police officers and am ambulance, around 9:20 am, because a woman our age [mid 20s] was cut on the forehead by a man with a knife on her walk to the metro. It happened right outside of the church on 10th and N, and apparently he approached another man first, but the other man screamed and ran, then he approached the woman and cut her before another neighborhood man with a dog came running after him. The man with a knife apparently got away, I don’t know his status. Very scary!!”

Ed. Note: No mention of a knife but DCAlerts tweeted just before this incident at the same location:

“Robbery at 0907 hours in the 1300 block of 10th St NW Lookout for B/M, 18-20 years of age, 5’9”, 170lbs., wearing tan pants and a grey hoode…”

More anit prostitution stings from MPD:

“On 03/17/2015, during the early morning hours, members of the 3rd District VICE Unit conducted a covert “Anti Prostitution” Operation along the borders of PSA 307 & PSA 308. During the course of this initiative, members arrested two (2) male “Johns” who were seeking the services of street level prostitutes and one (1) “Pimp” who solicited an undercover officer to work for him and provide prostitution services on his behalf. Human Trafficking is real and a danger for everyone involved. Please remember “If You See Something…Say Something!”

From Bar Pilar:

“We’re old, but we definitely still know how to party! Bar Pilar, the lauded neighborhood restaurant and watering hole, is marking a decade of service at 1833 14th Street NW with a week-long celebration of throwback drinks, favorite dishes and guest bartenders starting on Tuesday, March 17th ending in a 10th Anniversary Party upstairs at the restaurant on Sunday, March 22nd.

“Over the past decade, we have seen 14th Street boom around us, worked with a motley crew of talented individuals who have helped shape the DC dining scene, and have had the privilege of serving countless guests who have passed through our doors,” says general manager Matt Brown. “There’s a lot to celebrate & we look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces at Pilar over the course of the week.”

On Monday – for one night only – Chef Jesse Miller will feature Pilar’s Prime Rib dinner, including a slab of prime rib, creamed spinach, foie gras whipped potatoes and glace. Other popular past menu items will be offered in addition to the regular menu throughout the week, including the Malt Aioli Potatoes, Grilled Calamari with Tomato & Basil, Tuna Niçoise, and the Bacon Buddy. Bar Manager Ben Wiley is also planning a special drink menu for the week featuring classic Bar Pilar signatures, like The Dark Side, The Ruffled Shirt, and The Bees & the Beer, with a few guest bartenders making special appearances behind the bar on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday nights.

To cap off the celebration, Bar Pilar invites everyone to its 10th Anniversary Party on Sunday, March 22nd upstairs at the restaurant starting at 7pm. The evening will include complimentary light bites, DJs and signature cocktails from the past decade (cash bar – all cocktails $10).”

5111 Georgia Ave, NW

From Straw Stick & Brick Delicatessen (formerly three little pigs):

“Tomorrow [Today] will be our 3rd year anniversary! Three years is a big deal! It’s a big deal because ninety percent of food service businesses close their doors before reaching that benchmark – only one in ten make it! We couldn’t be more grateful and appreciative to each and every person that has helped us make it through. We certainly didn’t do it on our own strength alone! We hope that you know that we really are thankful for all you have offered us; from shopping with us, sharing our food with your friends and family, offering encouragement, suggestions, and advice.

We can’t tell you how many people have told us they didn’t think that our business could survive in these early development stages happening in our neighborhood. In almost all cases, their intentions were good – people definitely wanted to see us thrive, but many were unsure if the timing was right for a business like ours. We knew we had our work cut out for us, but loyal customers and steady press let us know we were on to something great.

If you haven’t been by the shop lately, come by and see us again. If you have been coming regularly you probably already know about our growing pantry, bigger and better lunch menu, workshops on everything from butchery to salumi, and the renovations on our second floor. This is our year to strengthen and improve our work to give you a better and better experience. We couldn’t be more excited to have you on this journey with us.

So… how about some fun? Friday through Sunday we will have some awesome stuff going on! We have 25% off all smoked sausages, workshop giveaways, and a ton of meat boards so you can sample some of our favorite cured meats! Stop by, say hello, and join us in celebrating this awesome milestone!”

Whole-Foods-P-Street-bread
1440 P Street, NW

From a press release:

“Four distinctive loaves from Bread Furst available at Whole Foods Market P St. starting Thursday

What breads will be available?

· Corn Rye: The corn is on the crust, making the bread crunchy when you bite into it. It has the flavor of caraway, traditionally teamed with rye bread.

· Whole Wheat: A bread shouldn’t be called “whole wheat” unless it is made entirely from whole wheat flour, flour made from the entire berry. Bread Furst’s is made entirely from a coarse whole wheat bought from Pecan Meadow Farms, a small Pennsylvania Amish farm.

· Multigrain: This is a hearty bread with grains spread throughout the loaf.

· Teff Rye: Teff is best known to us as the flour in injera, the Ethiopian flat bread. It’s both flavorful and nutritious.

What makes the bread different? (more…)
