I’ve been dying to know what’s going into this building on H St, NE (next to the Atlas Theater) but sadly haven’t seen anything yet. So in the meantime, lets judge the building. I’ve been watching this building for months and months and this is a complete rehab. It’s def. a unique building for the street. It has some interesting details:

But what do you think overall – thumbs up or down?

It’s been a while since we heard the news that 1015 H St, NE would become the Atlas Room in the old Napa 1015 space. I just noticed the new awning had gone up and here’s a bit more info from their Web site:

“The Atlas Room offers a dining room that strives to provide a menu of local seasonal offerings in a unique and relaxed atmosphere. Its modern American cooking style draws inspiration from around the globe while focusing the menu on local and sustainable ingredients. The bar offers the opportunity to indulge in a selection of signature cocktails and wines while relishing the seasonal and ever evolving menu. Our style of dining reflects today’s eating sensibility, with the option of all menu choices available in a personal, appetizer or main plate portion size.

The Atlas Room will provide the community with a high quality eco-conscious restaurant and bar. A restaurant is capable of being more than just organic to the neighborhood by fitting into the surrounding landscape and demographic. It should also strive to fill a need at the basic social level for connecting with those around us and experiencing the conviviality of the table. The Atlas Room will have this ambitious goal at the heart of its fine seasonal food and wine offerings and consistently gracious approach to service.”

Hopefully, it’s not too much longer until they open.

The Bicycle Thief, Film Poster, 1948

The Bicycle Thief is a classic Italian film so I was intrigued by an MPD email that simply had in the title – The Bicycle Thief. Not as poetic as the film but still an important message:

This was no run of the mill burglary for the sake of stealing bicycles. Yesterday morning at about 8:45 a.m., a suspect was observed on camera breaking into a rear garage in the 4700 blk of Connecticut Ave. N.W. Once inside, he walked two bicycles out the door and moments later was observed cutting away the locks on two more which he promptly rolled out the door and then made good his escape.

As much as it pains me to tell all of you that your unattended bicycles should not be considered safe if locked to railings or fences inside private garages, the fact of the matter is they are not. Our officers canvass alleys and streets for suspicious activity but the reality is, we won’t be able to see it all as it goes down. We rely heavily on your help to bring us to the bad guys. We also need your help with removing the low hanging fruit that allows the benefits to outweigh the costs.

I cannot express with greater emphasis the importance of not doing the things that, once upon a time, sufficed to prevent crime. We live in a very different time and all of us need to ramp up our effort. If you need any pointers on what you can do to make your property more safe, I am happy to give you my undivided attention. Please call me to schedule a visit or to just get some advice over the phone.

Thank You, Lt. Victor S. Braschnewitz

Ed. Note: We discussed some of our favorite foreign films here.

MPD writes:

“Officers responded to a call for the sounds of gunshots in the rear of 900 blk 10th St NE. Once on the scene, they located 3 shell casings. Crime Scene Search responded and processed the scene. A canvass for subjects was also conducted with negative results.”

I’m certainly no art critic but the new (to me) exhibit at 4th and H St, NE looks awesome. Do you like this one better than the previous exhibit from ‘I Am Art’ that was there in June? And of course still a great use of temporary vacant space. What’s your favorite piece?

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

“We just saw this property at an open house and it was AMAZING. Beautifully finished inside and out with original inlaid floors, stained glass, custom baths, and an incredible kitchen. Totally fabulous property. Makes me wish we were in the market for a house. I have no affiliation with the house beyond the fact it’s located in our neighborhood.”

It’s definitely a good looking house! But do you think this 4 bed/3.5 bath will go for $839,999?

Photo from Metro Mutts Facebook page

Unfortunately there is still a lot of hate in the world. Metro Mutts, located at 508 H St, NE, tweeted on Sunday:

“Arrived at the store today to find the following words spray painted on our door “Cracker (large penis illustration) get out my city fag”

Makes me more sad than mad.

The police just left the shop a few minutes ago. We filed a report and there will be an investigation.”

“A Beast of a House with the Heart of a Home. Calculate the $ per sq ft on this place, count the southern side windows, add up the bedrooms, and you’ll have numbers you can take to the bank. Rare find: Completely updated with retention of traditional and graceful original layout, gleaming heart-pine flooring and beautiful tin-ceilings. If you need space, parking, bsmnt, under $500k, this is it!”

You can find more info and photos here.

Does $498,750 sound reasonable for this 4 bed/2bath?

Interestingly the Redfin listing for a virtual tour sends you to a different nearby home (on accident, I assume). That home is at 1225 I St, NE and is also going for $498,750. You can see the virtual tour here. Which house do you like better?

I just noticed this place last weekend on H St, NE (sadly I now realize I didn’t write down the exact block, I wanna say somewhere between 5th and 8th on the north side of the street). Anyway, I couldn’t find out much about them on the web so I’m wondering if anyone has checked them out yet? Do you know when they opened? And of course – how’s the bbq?
