From an email:

As a H St. NE/Capitol Hill neighborhood homeowner and business owner I want to introduce myself and share some exciting news. I started Spot On Training in April of 2010 in hopes of providing the dog owners in the surrounding community a positive option for dog training right here in our neighborhood. I’m a certified professional trainer and until now have focused primarily on in-home private training with some classes here and there. I’m excited to announce that in late January the Spot On Dog Training studio will open on H Street in the lower level of Metro Mutts. (508 H St, NE)

I think area dog lovers would love to hear about this new partnership and would be pleased to know that yet another resource has landed on their door steps. And that 2 businesses have come together to help make our neighborhood a better place to live in! Attached is a press release with more information.

A recent liquor license application says:

“New full service restaurant serving New Orleans style dishes with a Sidewalk Café. Live entertainment will be in the form of New Orleans style by small groups featuring jazz, easy listening and soulful music. Seating capacity is 154. Total occupancy load is 182. Sidewalk Café seats 62.”

Is New Orleans style officially becoming a new DC trend? At the end of Dec. we learned that The Cajun Experience DC would be coming to the old Inti Peruvian Restaurant at 1825 18th St. NW. And of course Hot N Juicy which we spoke about this morning in Woodley Park.

For TruOrleans coming to H St, NE, I’m particularly eager to check out their jazz. Stay tuned for updates as construction progresses.

At long last Smith Commons will be opening up:
“On New Year’s Eve, Smith Commons will welcome guests for dinner on the first floor Dining Room. The Public House on levels two and three has no cover charge and will be open from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am with complimentary hors d’oeuvres from 9:00 to midnight.”

They are located at 1245 H St. NE and you can see their menu here.

Frozen Tropics reports that Sticky Rice had been shut down after a non fatal stabbing their last night:

“There was a non-fatal stabbing incident at Sticky Rice last night, and the restaurant has been closed for the standard “up to 96 hours.” They shut down around 10pm last night.”

Sticky Rice is located at 1224 H St, NE.

Update from @HStreetDC on twitter: “MPD has made an arrest in the Felony ADW – Knife @StickyRiceDC. Customary closure until hearing can be held.”

This rental is located at 1106 7th Street, NE:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Clean 1 BR English basement apartment in the heart of the Atlas District. Two blocks from Galludet U. Perfect student housing. Separate entrance, front and back. Street Parking. $1075 plus utils. 2 year lease preferred, minimum 1 year lease required. Available now. Washer/Dryer, dishwasher, central air. Walk to Metro. Pets discouraged, but will consider on case by case basis.”

Does $1075 sound reasonable for this 1 bedroom English basement apartment?

Somebody asked me this question a while ago and when I was on H St, NE last week it jumped back in my head. And I have no idea what the answer is. Anyone know how it’ll work? Does the street car share a lane with cars or will the lane be designated for street cars only? You can see in the photo above that cars currently use it.

And a quick side note since we were talking about the biking track troubles at 9th and L St, NW – do any folks who bike on H St, NE have trouble/get stuck in the tracks?

It’s funny I was just having a conversation with a friend lamenting the fact that H St, NE was missing good pizza options (though I do recognize that Liberty Tree has some). I’m talking a place that specializes in pizza. Their liquor license application says:

“New Restaurant with pizza, appetizers, salads, and sandwiches. No entertainment. Seating capacity is 48. Total occupancy load is 48. Summer Garden with 16 seats”

Sounds promising to me. Anyone know if they are affiliated with the folks on Wisconsin Ave with the sweet sign? That Angelico’s has locations in Glover Park, Mt. Pleasant, U St, NW, and elsewhere. But again, I’m not sure this is the same folks. If it’s not the same folks I wonder if they’ll be some naming/trademark issues?

They’ll open at 1421 H St, NE not far from the Argonaut. And I’ll be sure to sample the goods when they open to see if the H Street pizza vacuum has been filled.

Thanks to J.T. for sharing the news and photos. He writes, “New Taco Stand on @HstreetDC where the Water Ice place used to be.”

Frozen Tropics has a bit more info on the space located at 1204 H St, NE:

“Tacos Impala is a new taco stand venture from two guys who are no strangers to H Street. Right now the menu is carnitas, braised beef, or bean and cotija cheese, tacos. Tacos run $3 each, and you can wash them down with a Mexican Coke, or Jarritos. Open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Late night hours on weekends.”

Reminds me a bit of Tomatillo Taqueria served out of Big Hunt in Dupont.

Admittedly I’m not one to study reports and dig through the minutia of stuff that quite frankly I don’t understand. But one thing I have been able to understand is that there is a group that strongly opposes the use of overhead wires anywhere in DC (even if seemingly there are no views to be blocked). It was my understanding that the only way to power H St, NE’s proposed line was by overhead wires. Maybe I’m wrong but I thought I read that somewhere. Now DDOT issues a press release saying in part, “DDOT will also pursue a vehicle capable of operating without overhead wires in early 2011.”

So I ask you dear readers, who are far more knowledgeable about these sorts of things than I am – please explain what this means. Maybe the lawyers can help me understand what, “DDOT will also pursue a vehicle capable of operating without overhead wires in early 2011.” actually means. Does this mean, new tracks will be not be powered by overhead wires? Does it mean overhead wires will be installed and then removed when a vehicle “capable of operating without overhead wires” is procured? Does it mean where overhead wires are installed will remain overhead wires or are overhead wires completely off the table at this point?

Is it just me or were we once told that it had to be overhead wires?

And just to be clear on my end, from a personal level, I support the installation of street cars with or without overhead wires on H St, NE. Having said that, if it is possible without being prohibitively expensive, I too would prefer the cars be powered in other ways. Either way, I hope we’ll really see street cars in 2012.

Full press release after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

Any idea what is being built next to Capital City Diner (1050 Bladensburg Road, NE)? Its been over a month and its coming up fast. I asked around but no-one seems to know, even the people building it.”

Matt from the Diner tells me:

“City-funded (multi-million dollar, I think, through a city grant) 4-story 15-unit apartment building, I believe. Supposed to be finished early next year.”

And nearby across the street a bit closer to H St, NE there is a huge project called the “Flats at Atlas District” under way:

“Clark Realty Capital is developing The Flats at Atlas District, a multifamily luxury apartment community located near the H Street, Atlas, Trinidad, and Rosedale communities in the Northeast quadrant of Washington, DC, a short walk from the many restaurants, shops, and bars on H Street as well as the historic Atlas Theater.”
