Oh man, this one is super sweet. It has it all – it’s blue, has cool wood, interesting door knocker, wild hinges and handle and some fresh porch lights. Well done. The reader found it on R Street in Dupont.

This has to be the craziest contrast in styles I’ve ever seen. This is from Mass. Ave east of Dupont Circle. The building on the left is the Uzbekistan Embassy and the modern styled one on the right is the Institute of International Economics. Wow. What do you think of them individually? And next to each other? Super cool or a tragedy?

Do you ever walk around Dupont Circle and wonder what is behind the ornate Victorian facades of the mansions that were built for DC’s rich and famous back in the day? I know I’m always curious about both the interiors and the history of these architectural wonders. While so many of them have been cut into trendy condos and apartments, The Mansion at O Street presents a unique adventure and a particularly Washingtonian experience.

I had no idea that this treasure even existed until a friend took me for a belated birthday outing to O-dinner-tini (yes, really) on Monday night. This event apparently takes place every Monday night from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. I was completely swept away upon crossing the threshold.

Walking into The Mansion at O Street involves being greeted by several staff members who showed us to the coat room and our table and the bar. The interior is festooned with a ridiculous number of huge ornate crystal chandeliers, and rich Victorian architectural details such as carved woodwork and a decorative ceiling. Serving as a gallery, as well as a hotel, the rooms are covered from floor to ceiling with artwork and such curiosities as guitars signed by rock stars.

As intense as the décor is, the food is quite spectacular as well. The front parlor is home to an extensive display of extreme desserts. The dinner buffet has a room of its own, with cuisine ranging from elegant comfort foods including beef stew and garlic mashed potatoes, to a wide range of vegetarian choices such as pastas and soups. Most fun, however, is the peanut butter station, which included white bread, marshmallow fluff, honey, and of course, jelly. (I’d say The Mansion would be a fun kid outing for older elementary school age and up.) During the meal, we were well attended by the plentiful white-gloved staff. Continues after the jump. (more…)

I can’t remember if we’ve done this building before but it’s worth another look. It’s so unusual to see a building like this in the Dupont area on P Street between 16th and 17th. It’s pretty sweet they all have garages. What do you think of the style – thumbs up or down?

This home is located at 1716 Q Street, NW:

More info and a sick virtual tour found here.

Wow, this house is pretty ridiculous. 7 fireplaces? Did you see the deck? Nice. And it can be yours for $2,395,000. But obviously for these house porn editions I’m more interested to know what you think of the house itself?

Well, you knew we’d eventually get to Komi located at 1509 17th Street, NW. You can see their menu on their Web site in a pdf version. I think it’s probably unanimous that the food is great. What I’m wondering is – is the food worth the price? And as always, how’s the atmosphere inside?

I hope I’m not overloading you guys with Middle Eastern food options! Skewers is located at 1633 P Street, NW. You can see the menu in pdf format on their Web site. It also says Saturday is Belly Dancing Night. Sweet! So first off – how’s the food and atmosphere? Secondly – how’s the belly dancing?

Last week a reader asked why the prices at the Chastleton, located at 1701 16th Street, NW, were so reasonable. Their Web site says the units are available from “the upper $100’s to the upper $400’s”. Lots of info, history and pictures found here.

While the range is a bit large do you think these sound like reasonable prices for such a prime location? Who knows the haunting history?

They do have a sweet doorway:

Sorry I forgot to mention this – “DPR To Make Improvements To Dog Exercise Area at Walter Pierce Park”:

“The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced today that they will be making improvements to the dog exercise area at Walter Pierce Park, located at Adams Mill & Ontario Roads, NW.

Weather permitting, the dog exercise area is scheduled to close and work begin on January 22, 2009. Once underway, work is expected to last approximately three weeks. The rest of Walter Pierce Park will remain open.

Improvements to the dog exercise area include the installation of new five-foot high perimeter fencing with a double gate, and installation of a new dog exercise surface, which will be 6 inches of compacted stone.”

For more on Walter Pierce Park you can read a profile here.

Speaking of dog parks – the park at S Street and 17th, NW is also slated to become a dog park.

More photos after the jump. (They also have some cool sculptures that I’ve never photographed before I hope they remain after the renovation.) (more…)
