Back in October ’08 I suggested you check out a photography exhibit at National Geographic. I’m sure there have been lots of great exhibits in the interim but I just checked out the Kodachrome “American Tourist in Europe” photography exhibit. And it was equally awesome. Lots of great shots from the 50s and 60s. Well worth checking out! The National Geographic Society is located at 1600 M Street, NW (but you sorta have to walk through a courtyard to get to the exhibit).

There were also some new sculptures that I hadn’t seen before.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

It looks like they’re recycling the space and bleachers from the Washington Kastles for some kind of Nike sponsored event, at 11th and H streets. They’ve built a basketball court and have set up a concert-style stage at one end, where they’re testing a sound system. One of the banners on the bleachers says nikebasketball.com but the website doesn’t say much about who if anyone will be playing (basketball or music) – just calls it a “community day” and says it’s tomorrow, Friday the 14th.”

Sounds cool, anyone else know more about this event?

The old Hotel Washington building has reopened as the W Hotel at 515 15th Street, NW. The building looks great. But the real question is – how is the roof deck? That used to be a great attract of the Hotel Washington. Anyone check out the reopened roof deck yet?

Coming to 1309 F Street, NW is FunXion, a new tavern to be serving “burgers, pizza, chicken and salads”. There could also be dancing, DJs and live bands:

And at 2608 Georgia Ave., the former home of ShowOff Apparel, the storefront has been fixed up:

There were a bunch of cards for MonaVie a company that:

“Introduced in January 2005, MonaVie develops and markets scientifically formulated, premium quality nutritional products, specifically for person-to-person distribution.”

What is “person-to-person distribution”? Is that like door to door sales? Anyone ever hear of MonaVie?

Thanks to a reader for sending the news. The reader hears Pizza Autentica, located at 1331 L Street, NW, will open in around a month or so. Anyone ever hear of Pizza Autentica before?

The reader also writes that on the same block:

“NYU plans to build its first

16th and I Street, NW

Welcome new PoP contributor, Kashuo Bennett. He could not have arrived at a better time. I’ve been wondering for a while what you folks thought about this building and whether or not it should be demolished. Though I don’t necessarily agree with Kash, I’m glad to hear his perspective. Kash will be contributing a variety of posts about DC’s unique architecture.

Fogo de Chao is located at 1101 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Here’s another place that I hear people raving about it. I know it’s a Brazilian steakhouse, with many locations, and that you can do an all you can eat deal. So is the steak that good or is it the all you can eat deal that people love so much?

I think Saf mentioned in the comments that you can get a mean potato knish here. Very good to know. Cafe Mozart is located at 1331 H Street, NW. And it is also apparently a German deli. But most important to me – how is the schnitzel?

Jazz in the Sculpture Garden, located at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, is a blast. When the weather is warm as it was last Friday it is hard to find a better way to spend your early evening. The concerts go from 5:00PM to 8:30PM and you can find the full schedule here. I hadn’t been for a while and forgot how fun it was. It’s a great spot for a picnic or just to put your feet in the fountain.

And don’t forget the cool sculptures:
