Back in Dec. ’10 the Washington Post reported that Rogue States hoped to re-open their Dupont location at 1300 Connecticut Ave NW in February. Peeking in the window last weekend it doesn’t look very promising. I’m also keeping my eyes on the proposed second location at 1931 14th St. NW [by 14th and U St, NW] but not a lot of movement there either.

The Downtown BID writes:

“Mixt Greens, an eco-gourmet restaurant concept, has closed its location at 1311 F Street (NW). The restaurant had just replaced Organic to Go, which shuttered its operations nationwide to focus on its organic wholesale and catering business, last year. Mixt Greens cited “a long running dispute with the landlord” as the reason why it shut down.”

The only question I have is – how much longer will next door neighbor Funxion last?

Pangea in March ’10

“Dear PoP,

I work right across the street from Pangea (I can see it right now) and it’s totally empty. Everything is totally moved out – they didn’t even have a going out of business sign – they were open on friday!! EVERYTHING is gone. and i mean EVERYTHING.”

Wild. We had just checked them out at 2121 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW last March.

Their Web site is no longer active as well. It previously said,

“Pangea is Greek for “all lands”. Pangeamarket.com, supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), brings together traditional high quality handicrafts made by artisans in developing countries.”

It’s too bad it sounded like a cool spot benefitting a good cause. Anyone know what happened?

Pangea in Feb ’11

I guess the coolness of this offer will depend on how much snow we get…

From a press release:

This Thursday, January 27, The Brown Bag restaurant will host a Grand Opening event to showcase their latest location at 1625 Eye Street NW in Washington, DC.

The Brown Bag was originally founded in 2002, opening their first location in Bethesda.

Over the past nine years, the fast casual sensation has expanded to five locations spanning Maryland, Virginia and the District.

The Brown Bag is designed around their signature “Build your Own” menu. Whether a customer is looking for an omelet, salad, sandwich or noodle bowl, they can get exactly what they want to eat by designing their meal to their specifications at each and every visit.

This Thursday, January 27th from 7:30am-10am The Brown Bag is inviting everyone to check out their newest store and enjoy a complimentary breakfast with pastries, muffins and Swing’s Coffee.

You can see their menu here. Any fans?

It’s been a good couple of weeks for new lunch options for those who work near the White House. Spice Indian Bistro recently opened up at 17th and Penn. NW and we recently learned that Wicked Waffle was coming to 1712 Eye St, NW. Add a new pizza option to the list.

The Upper Crust Pizzeria will be coming to 1747 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW (next to a relatively new Roti.) A recent liquor license application says:

“Gourmet Pizzeria offering dine-in, take out, and delivery. Occupancy load of 34.”

A good pizza place at this location would be a phenomenal addition for the lunch crowd.

Update: You can see their Facebook page here:

“OFFICIAL Facebook for Boston’s best pizza with 17 locations in and around Boston; 1 in Key West. Coming soon to DC!”

Taberna Del Alabardero is located at 1776 I Street NW (Entrance On 18th Street between H and I). According to their Web site:

“In his first venture abroad, Luis Lezama crossed the Atlantic to open Taberna Del Alabardero in the Nation’s Capital city on March 27, 1989. Washingtonian Magazine restaurant critic Robert Shoffner calls it “The best Spanish restaurant in the Country”. The New York Times enthusiastically greeted the restaurant’s arrival, just four blocks from The White House, saying Lezama was “… finally bringing a sophisticated Spanish Kitchen to the Nation’s Capital…

Since 1989 Taberna quickly garnered high praise and a legion of acolytes, fast forward 21 years later executive Chef Javier Romero continues to carry the torch that was established. While the restaurant regularly plays host to diplomats and dignitaries, all of our guest are special, and we welcome you as we would into our own home.

You can see their menus here.

Any must order items?

“Dear PoP,

A colleague and I were just walking by 1769 (?) H Street NW and the windows had declarations proclaiming the space “your civic space” any idea what this space is and who its for? I did some googling and couldn’t find anything out.”

Hmm, I’ve now stopped by three times and it’s been closed everytime! I saw a pamphlet in the window for the newseum in the window so perhaps there is some affiliation? Or possibly some relation to the Wharton club? I’m counting on PoPville here – anyone what the story is with this space at the corner of 18th and H St, NW?

Looks like another potentially good lunch spot is coming to downtown.  Actually if waffles are involved this could be epic.  Stay tuned for updates when they come close to opening up.

The 1700 block of Eye St, NW will be pretty popular once next store neighbor Loeb’s NY deli finally opens next door as well:
