Thanks to a reader for sending:
“3000 block of 14th St. NW is closed Northbound & Southbound and 14th & Irving St. NW is blocked. Columbia Heights Metro Station(Green Line) is closed on the South side”
Another reader tells me it was a shooting.

It was nice to see this guy making balloon animals for the kids at the corner of 14th and Irving, NW (near the CH metro). And the tips are going to a good cause.
I wonder, though, if this is just another sign of the bad economy.

We’ve actually monitored the progress on this home across from Cardozo HS on Clifton. I just noticed that the back of this home is pretty sweet. It’s an interesting back addition. A reader last week suggested I also take photos of the front of “judging backs of rowhouses”. So I was surprised to see this was a pop up we had viewed a while ago.
So what do you think of the back? The pop up? Any supporters?

“The street was blocked off so the kids had lots of room to play. The lack of traffic and parked cars really changed the character of the the street, making it feel more like an inviting part of the interior of the house. It was like we extended the boundary of our living room out into the street to overlap with the neighbors’. Everyone came out and grilled and socialized as if we all shared a common courtyard in the same building. Wish it could be like that every day!”
I think this is one of the best ways to build community. You had old, young, black, white etc. All with smiles. A beautiful sight and most definitely part of the beautiful life.

A reader tipped me off to a City Paper classified ad:
“Delivery Driver Wanted for Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza in Columbia Heights. Apply at 1400 Irving St NW ste 103 Monday-Friday between 3-5pm.”
I’m always glad to hear about more delivery options! I’m guessing they’ll deliver to CH, Petworth, Mt. Pleasant, Adams Morgan, Park View and Shaw but I’ll have to find out the exact boundaries.

I saw three people get drenched from passing cars. Turns out it was a hydrant that was opened and gushing water. I’ve never seen a hydrant gush this much water before…

This is getting beyond insane. From a Council Member Jim Graham email:
“Sadly I must inform you that an adult male (not yet identified) was shot five times in about the same location that Paul Jones was killed on January 9. He was pronounced at the hospital a short time later. This all occurred just after 10 PM.
This is the same block that has had a police post and a light tower every day for months.
The light tower was not up due to the rain. But Cmdr Kucik informs me that the police officer was at the post in the middle of the block at the very time this person was shot. Other officers were nearby and responded immediately.
This means that the shooting occurred just a stone’s throw from a police officer. He heard the shots and went to the body.
We are awaiting more information.”

This is the home just east of 14th Street (I think Otis Newton but I’m not 100%) that was gutted by fire a year or so ago. It’s nearly all fixed now. It’s interesting that only half is brick up top. It obviously looks much better than a burned out shell but I’m wondering what you think of the final look – thumbs up or down?
