It has changed an awful lot since I first posted. A reader mentioned that the rowhouse section (photographed above) looks particularly good. Hells yes. Now I enjoy and appreciate murals all over town but I think this is the absolute best one I’ve seen. So cool that it was done by students. If you haven’t checked it out yet, take a detour, it is well worth the trip.

More info but sadly no photos found here.

I know folks don’t like GDoN without photos but I was intrigued by the price on this one. It’s close to the metro and all the happenings on 11th Street, NW. So does $250,000 sound reasonable? Even if you need to put in some money seems like it could be a good deal. What do you guys think?

“Dear PoP,

The 11th St Corridor has had more foot traffic in recent times, thanks to some great new businesses. I’m specifically concerned about the 11th and Park Rd intersection, which is the location of Red Rocks, the new dog park, Columbia Heights Coffee, and the upcoming Meridian Pint. Given that I (along with many others) travel to these establishments on foot, I think this intersection would be more pedestrian-friendly if it was a 4-way stop instead of a traffic light. I would feel safer crossing the street if cars were forced to yield to pedestrians (and our 4-legged companions), rather than speeding through green or yellow lights. This will become even more relevant as foot traffic increases with future business openings. I’m wondering if (1) others agree, and (2) if so, how do we raise this issue with the DC Council?”

To be honest, I think it’s probably safer as stop light. People often run/glide past stop signs. Park is a busy enough street that a stop light seems necessary. What do you guys think?

Incidentally I’ve been asked to post this survey about Columbia Heights businesses. We’ve discussed this issue often but if you’d like there is a survey on the topic:

“Do you live, work or shop in Columbia Heights? Are you interested in improving business services to you? Then please complete this 5-minute survey. Click here to go to the survey!
The Development Corporation of Columbia Heights wants to learn what additional businesses and services you desire in the neighborhood and what you think about existing businesses in the neighborhood.”

From alert dc:

“Update on the shooting at 3300 14 ST NW is closed in both directions for police activity. The traffic is being diverted at Newton and Irving ST NW.”

DCist says:

“An adult male was shot this afternoon near the intersection of 16th and Spring Streets NW. D.C. Police say the man was shot in the back, and made his way on foot to 14th Street and Park Road NW…”

“Dear PoP,

Columbia Heights and/or the zip code 20010 has the highest concentration of former Peace Corp Volunteers than any other part of the US/World.

I can’t remember where I heard it, but now a friend of mine is asking if there is a source other than myself as to the validity of this claim. Would you or any of your readers be able to help point to some source that could confirm/deny this?”

I’m sure there are some former peace corps folks out there. Can anyone confirm this?

Hello Cupcake, located at 1351 Connecticut Avenue, NW, is celebrating its one year birthday and giving away free cupcakes today starting at 10am.

And from a reader:

“As you might know, Washingtonian.com is holding a “pizza pool” NCAA-style bracket for readers’ favorite pizza places in the region.

As it turns out, on day 1 of Round 2, two Columbia Heights businesses are up against two NoVa businesses: Pete’s is up against Cafe Pizzaiola (Alexandria and Crystal City), and RedRocks is up against Piola (Rosslyn).

Voting ends at noon, at which time Petworth’s own Moroni & Brother’s takes the batter’s box, against Logan Circle high-end restaurant Posto, since Moroni won in the first round against PieTanza.”

The flier says:

“FHA APPROVED. Elegant European finishes you wont find anywhere under 500K, smart spaces, 8 one bedroom units at the Colvin House, steps to METRO, and everything Columbia Heights. Hardwood floors, washer and dryer in unit, parking extra, priced to sell.”

More info found here and here. A photo tour can be found here.

We judged the building before it was completely finished back in July and folks mostly liked it. Now we can get a look inside. It seems pretty nice. Units range from $259,000 – $293,000. Sound reasonable? What do you think of the units themselves?

“Dear PoP,

There used to be a large, historic apartment building shell near 14th and Belmont, behind the demolished former strip mall. Clearly it took a lot of effort and money to preserve the facade of this building, (possibly it was gutted by fire – I don’t really know). But it’s now it’s been demolished. Any word on what the plan for that building shell was, and what is coming to this intersection now? With both the apartment shell and the strip mall gone, this has become a very sizeable vacant lot in a good location. But I’m sad that the old facade won’t be part of the new development.”

Wow that is crazy. The facade was there for so long I thought for sure it’d be preserved. Here’s what it looked like (back left hand side of photo below):

Anyone have the scoop here? Think the facade should’ve been preserved?

I’ve actually received a few emails about this but wasn’t able to track down an exact location but I still thought it was worth mentioning. The most recent reader writes:

“Last Sunday, on my way to check out Room 11, I passed by a very smoky barbecue on Park Rd. I approached and, asking what’s cooking, found a group of women huddled around a bunch of grilling chicken breasts and a very spicy looking red herbed sauce. They told me they already finished cooking the fish. I asked where they were from, and after telling me Vietnam, asked if I liked Vietnamese food. “Yes!” I said, and few in a few names of vietnamese dishes for street cred. They were quick to tell me that they are opening a Vietnamese restaurant in the neighborhood!!! They said the spot will be on 14th st, a few blocks north up by the gas station (I can’t remember which). The said it will be ready in about a month, and will be called “Pho Viet”.”

Of course Pho 14 recently opened up on Park Road just west of 14th Street. Perhaps the folks behind Pho Viet were inspired by their success. Are you excited by the idea of another Pho spot? I will of course update when more info becomes available.

The new field at the Harriet Tubman school, at 11th between Kenyon and Irving, is not the only new field in Columbia Heights. It looks like the new turf behind DC USA is nearly finished. You can see in the photo that there is a score board for the Bell Multi Cultural School located nearby on 16th Street. I didn’t see any Mayor Fenty signage on this one…
