“Dear PoP,

I walked by the new turf field yesterday and was wondering if the facility will ever be open to the public. I took a jaunt around the perimeter and all the entrances were padlocked. There were some neighborhood guys, playing touch football. While most of the fence is pointed, the fence could certainly be hopped pretty easily right by the turnstiles. Do you have any information on this? I would love to partake in some pickup soccer there.”

Thanks to Joeon11th for sharing the rules. The field is located off 11th Street between Irving and Kenyon.

Ugh, this whole process has been a lesson learned for me. This will be the last word. Anyway, I am retracting my retraction of the original story. I have received word from someone in the know, off the record, that they are indeed closing. Also many folks have emailed me saying that they have been told either on the phone or in person that Rumberos is closing. I consider this a sad development and wish the owners and staff the best of luck in the future.

Thaitanic II is the newest restaurant coming to Columbia Heights. It is located at 3462 14th Street, NW in the retail space of the Allegro apartments. One of the owners said they hope to open this weekend. They are shooting for Saturday, but it looks like that’ll be tight. But it is possible that they may finish the final touches by Saturday. If not, they’ll surely be open shortly after.

A few more photos after the jump. Any fans of the original Thaitanic out there? (more…)

Oh crap, this is very bad of me. I just called the store, from Saf’s comment, and they said they’d be open tomorrow. This is where language barrier is a problem. I spoke to a worker yesterday at the restaurant, who said the store was closing, but English was not his first language and it seems I completely misunderstood. I take total blame here. I’ll walk by the restaurant again today to get some more clarity. On the phone they said, they’d be open tomorrow but I’ll quadruple check. I’m terribly sorry for the confusion.

“Dear PoP,

After the “success” of the outdoor tables over the summer (I only live around the corner so I’ve seen people out there on the sidewalk all summer) I thought maybe Rumberos had turned a corner. I walked by today on my way home from the gym a few minutes ago to see all the windows blocked up with white paper, like you would see during a building fit out.”

I walked by today and a neighbor and worker inside told me the place had closed. They were packing up all the tables. The neighbor was truly surprised because she said she had just seen folks outside this past weekend. Rumberos was located at 3345 14th St, NW in the Tivoli complex. Whenever we spoke of Rumberos in the past folks always had wildly different opinions. Some folks loved it and others hated it. I personally enjoyed it the few times I went but I wasn’t a regular. I am sad to see another empty storefront…

Will anyone miss them?

UPDATE Apparently they are not closing. A bit of a language barrier problem. Totally my fault. More details as they become available.

“Dear PoP,

Hard to tell but it looks like they may be installing solar panels on
these metal monstrosities. Thank god they finally gave me a reason not
to completely hate them.”

I still think it’s too early to tell, we gotta see when it’s all done.

I’m dying to hear what you think of these photos. They blew me away. Be sure to check out the living room photo. Does $699,000 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/2 bath?

The building that will house Meridian Pint at the corner of 11th and Park is starting to look good. How do you think it looks so far?

And the new row house/condos on the 2100 block of 11th Street near V is getting close to finished. I kinda dig the big windows. Do you think it’s starting to look good and will fit on the block or is too early to tell?

I actually don’t have any problem with all these signs at Panda Express on Irving Street. For the record I actually like Panda Express. However, here’s the sign I have a problem with:

Do they really need this paper sign stuck into the ground? Can we start a movement to ban all of these stick in the ground signs? I can’t stand all the “We’ll Buy Your House” “We’ll Buy Your Car” etc type signs. And of course we’ll have hundreds of politician signs popping up for the 2010 elections. Who’s with me for a ban of these signs?
