From CM Jim Graham:

“Good news, the design RFP for the reconstruction of Cardozo High School has been issued. A prebidders conference will be held this week. This is the key first step in the restoration and rehabilitation of this great high school building , located at 13th and Clifton since 1915. The athletic field has already been restored.”

Mr. T in DC showed us a postcard of what the school then Central High School, today Cardozo, looked like back in 1926.

I’ve been getting lots of emails about when folks can indulge in the table taps at at Meridian Pint opening soon at 11th and Park Road, NW. While they were shooting for a June 17th opening obviously that didn’t happen. As with many bars around town there are some last minute permit/inspection issues. My understanding is that the new opening date will be in the next 2 weeks. It’s gonna be a long 2 weeks but I suspect it’ll be worth the wait. Stay tuned for a new post when an exact opening date is set in stone…

“Dear PoP,

In my group house days I was always eager for a chance to pet-sit for friends as a way to enjoy a night or two alone, enjoy their generally better amenities like cable TV and hot tubs and maybe explore a new neighborhood. I know there are a lot of group-house people on this site, so now that I have the house, the dog and the amenities myself, I’m looking to find someone who might like to do the same.

I just posted on Craigslist under “housing swap” so anyone can contact me that way. (Or just type “dog sit prince of petworth” in the search craigslist box.”

This sounds pretty cool. But just to be clear, this is from a reader and you will be dog sitting a dog, not the prince of petworth.

This rental is located at 1451 Park Road NW:

Does $1201 sound reasonable for this studio?

The Christian Science Bookstore (I think it was a bookstore) has been vacated at 1405 Park Road, NW. It’s a small storefront so it’ll be interesting to see what will move into this space.

And Up Against the Wall clothing store has closed up at 2301 Georgia Ave, NW. Though I think they still have a Georgetown location at 3219 M St, NW. City Paper’s Housing Complex noted that retail on lower Georgia Ave was pretty sad. It really is amazing that having Howard University nearby wouldn’t support a more vibrant retail scene.

Great news from the Columbia Heights’ listserv:

Fourteen Washington-area high schools are ranked among the 100 best in the nation by Newsweek.
To make the list, schools had to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses and tests.
Just 6 percent of all public schools in the nation are on the list.
Here are the local high schools and their rankings in the top 100:

H.B. Woodlawn in Arlington – 27
Richard Montgomery in Rockville – 33
Bell Multicultural in D.C. – 37

Thanks to a reader for the heads up about the new signage at Dodge City at 917 U St, NW.

And a second hand clothing store (though there will be some new items as well) is opening up at 3531 14th St, NW. This is the storefront that was going to house the Guatemala Bakery.

The coming soon sign for UGG is at 1249 Wisconsin Ave, NW.

“Dear PoP,

I have an odd question. I bike into work and use 11th. I get on 11th at Monroe and right around Park, every morning, it smells amazing. I smell wonderful baked goods, but I don’t see a bakery anywhere, do you know from where this wonderful smell emanates?”

I think this bakery actually came up in the comments of a post yesterday about Latino food on 14th St, NW.

It’s located right next to the take Chinese place on 11th and you’re in luck – I think a commenter says they sell to individuals. Can anyone confirm that?
