In early May The Pinch opened up in the former El Salvadorena space located at at the corner of Parkwood and 14th St, NW. They are now serving brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm.

At seven or so this evening, a friend of mine encountered a young (she said 30s?) man who had just been assaulted and robbed. The guy told her that he had tried to sell his camera on Craigslist, met the “buyers” at Harriet Tubman school (in the parking lot), and was beaten up and robbed. He called the police, and my friend also followed up with the police afterwards.
She was understandably alarmed, not only because it is always traumatic to encounter a relatively violent crime, but because it was around 7pm (ie, bright out) and there were people all around, including several witnesses who did nothing. That was sort of a shame, as HT really is in the heart of Columbia Heights. I’m emailing the listhost because:
1. you know. FYI?
2. BE CAREFUL when selling things on craigslist!
3. If you see something, say something? My friend saw a bloodied young man and people just passed him by. I know that it’s not always the safest thing to help strangers, but we’re a great neighborhood, and I’d hate to think of any of us sitting there unhelped.Anyway, sorry for the mini rant. Hope you’re all safe, and and that you help a person in need (if it’s within your power).

Back in early May we learned that the Eastern Empire Chinese take out had closed at 3018 14th St, NW. Looks like a new restaurant is taking over the space – stay tuned!
A reader sends word – the permit was wrong – it will actually become a Sprint store.
Last week we took a sneak peek of Kangaroo Boxing Club which opened in the former Acuario space at 3412 11th St, NW in Columbia Heights. Now have a look at the menu:
Appetizers
Hummus and Fluffy Pita- housemade, spicy and delicious, ’nuff said *v 6
Bacon Date Crostini- bacon, date, almond, goat cheese, walnut raisin ficelle 7

Pellet removed from victims back
Dear PoPville,
On Sunday, June 17th, around 11:30 p.m. my roommate was shot with a pellet gun. The pellet pierced and lodged into his back. He’s fine and the wound is healing. This incident occurred while he was walking north bound on Sherman Avenue NW between Girard and Harvard Streets on the west side (the same side as the gas station). After notifying the Third District Police Department, it appears another shooting with a pellet gun may have occurred in the same vicinity around 12:30 a.m.
We called 911 after the incident with my roommate. The operator asked if an EMT was needed. We said no; however, the operator said officers would be sent to the area. We watched for a patrol car from several blocks away but never saw one after waiting 15 minutes or so.
Ed. Note: In July 2011 we learned of a cyclist hit by a bb gun on the 2300 block of 11th St, NW.
