“Dear PoPville,

A friend of mine in the building we live noticed a white bunny behind our building earlier this week, usually wouldn’t think anything of it, but we’ve seen it now almost a half dozen times (picture attached). Additionally we aren’t close to any “big” green space, except Meridian Hill Park and even then, I’ve rarely if ever seen a bunny there.

Anyway, someone has set up a makeshift box/home for it behind our building on the minimal grass we have. I figured I would send it your way to see if anyone was missing a bunny. I really don’t think it’s a wild bunny as it’s shown up so much. If we don’t find the owner I’ll notify the Humane Society if the bunny shows again.”

Thanks to all who emailed, tweeted and facebooked us.

Holy cow – thanks to a reader for sending word. Suffice it to say Columbia Heights’ Ruby Tuesday has been a slightly controversial topic. So was TGIFridays but that has apparently fallen through. Though as far as I know IHOP is still doing well. So, it’s hard to say, are we seeing the beginning of the end of big restaurant chains in Columbia Heights?

Ed. Note: Previous Ruby Tuesday locations have closed in Van Ness and Chinatown.

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking to the Columbia Heights metro this morning at about 8:45 when I saw that a woman had been hit by a car in the crosswalk at 14th and Otis St NW. I didn’t actually see the accident, but I saw her lying in the road and people were surrounding her trying to help her. The police and ambulance had been called and were just showing up. Just wondering if anyone else was there that wrote in and know if she was ok, or if the driver was caught? It didn’t seem like the firemen who responded at first were in a terribly big rush so I was hoping that meant the woman was going to be ok.

I also heard two other women who were bystanders talking about how this was the second time recently that someone had been hit in that crosswalk and how they wanted a stoplight or stop sign to be placed at that intersection. Maybe this is something we can post to raise awareness for drivers (and pedestrians) to be careful out there.”

On twitter I was sent:

“@PoPville Child struck in crosswalk on 14th street just north of CH. Everyone please slow down….your job can wait 30 seconds.”

Not sure if this is the same incident or if the victim was a child. Anyone else hear anything?

From Bloombars (3222 11th Street, NW):

“A message from Joel Bergner:

I recently began the third version of “Felipe’s Story,” the mural that has been on the side of BloomBars since 2009. That year, I spent time living and working in the notorious slum community (favela) City of God (Cidade de Deus) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My host family included an 11 year old boy named Felipe, who I quickly became close with, in part because he was in desperate need of father figures in his life after his dad was killed violently and he was being raised by his grandmother in an all-female household. I was struck by the extreme situation that this good-natured, playful child was in; his grandmother expressed her worry to me and explained how many kids in the neighborhood, including several of her own children, got sucked into the crime and drug underworld which so often led to death, prison, or addiction. She prayed that Felipe would follow the path of education and a positive life. I realized that this was the story of thousands of kids in Brazil and millions across the world, and when I returned to DC, where I was living at the time, I approached John Chambers about turning this concept into a mural with Felipe as the main character.

In the five years since then, my artistic style has changed dramatically and I have had the opportunity to organize arts-based social projects with youth in marginalized communities around the world in collaboration with local organizations. My work has taken me to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, an indigenous village in Mexico, a shantytown in Nairobi, Kenya, and many more. All of this has influenced me as a person and an artist, and I am grateful to be able to continuously update the mural at BloomBars with new experiments and ideas.

I have also repeatedly returned to my work in Brazil, where I have watched Felipe grow into a young man. Unfortunately, many of his grandmother’s fears have begun to come true. He was locked up last year for robbery and his cousin reported seeing him at a party with a gun. One evening I ran into him as he was on the corner with red-eyed drug traffickers, an awkward encounter for both of us. Still, all is not lost. Felipe’s family and his girlfriend are positive forces in his life and are attempting to get him on a different path. This is a choice only he can make.

This new version of “Felipe’s Story” features a 17-year-old Felipe in the same pose as the past murals. There are two creatures struggling over him; one a demon and the other a winged bird-man who wants to pull Felipe in the right direction. As they battle to influence him, Felipe stands still, trying to figure out which way to go and what to do with his life. The artwork includes a pattern that I saw on a sidewalk in Jordan, aerosol art, mosaic, and creatures that I invented but which are influenced by many ancient mythology traditions. I will complete the mural this week and am excited to present it next Sunday evening. Thanks to BloomBars for giving me the opportunity to share my art and the ongoing saga of Felipe as it unfolds.”
