Exec. chef David Ashwell has left Le Zinc to raise his growing family (second son just born) in wife Kirsty’s native Northern Ireland in a small town outside Belfast. We wish David well in his new life and thank him for his considerable contributions to our successful launch last July.

Joining Le Zinc this week as its new executive chef is Janis McLean, who for the last three years was the exec. chef at 15ria. Prior to that, Janis was the exec. chef at the Morrison Clark Inn restaurants and also served in the same capacity at redDog Cafe and Red Sage.

McLean received her training at L’Academie de Cuisine, followed by five years at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Burgundy, France, where she taught classes and eventually became director of U.S operations. She is a member of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, Les Dames d’Escoffier and the American Institute of Wine and Food.

We are very happy to have Janis come aboard and look forward to a promising future.

New changes coming next week. Janis is going to do a red wine-braised duck leg salad on hearty greens with a port vinaigrette; rabbit with prunes; whole roasted trout, and a lot more lunchtime salads and a daily quiche.

Bistro Le Zinc is located at 3714 Macomb St. NW (just of Wisconsin Ave.)

Thanks to a reader for sending word that St. Arnold’s (and Underground) located at at 3435B Connecticut Ave, NW opened up last Thursday.

Dear PoPville,

Upstairs: (seating for around 40)…very cool tables, light fixtures, full service bar. Complete menu of $18 mussel frites and then sandwiches/entrees/dessert waffles. Management says they are going to roll out brunch services in a few weeks to become more regular in the future. They are hoping to capitalize on the lack of good brunch spots in Cleveland Park (besides Dino, which happens to be next door). If you’re familiar w the former Sabores location, this upstairs seating area has roll up windows and will also have some outdoor seating when it gets warmer.

Downstairs, St Arnold’s Underground, is cool and a different atmosphere…basically a classier version of Atomic Billiards (also next door). Most exciting thing down here is a separate menu featuring New York Crif Dog style hotdogs…about 10 different variations from the classic (wrapped in bacon, deep fried) to the “Vietnamese.” $5 each.

Dear PoPville,

Walked past St. Arnold’s on the way to work this morning. Brown paper is off the windows, tables and chairs are set up, and a cleaning crew was in. A woman walking out of the place told me that they would be “open on Thursday or Friday.” Place looks great!

St. Arnold’s is located in the former Sabores space next to Dino at 3435B Connecticut Ave, NW. This will be their 2nd location. Their first spot is located in Dupont at 1827 Jefferson Place, NW.

Stay tuned for an update when the Underground at St. Arnold’s opens in the basement section of the former Club Soda space:

From an email:

John Eaton, a local jazz pianist and D.C. native who has performed for packed houses at the White House, the Kool Jazz Festival, and the Smithsonian Institution, is joining forces with John Eaton Elementary School to raise funds for arts and music programs at the 100-year-old public institution in D.C.’s Cleveland Park. The pianist will perform at the school’s Barbara Munday Theater on Saturday January 7 at 7:00 pm.
Mr. Eaton, who Washingtonian Magazine included on its 2008 list of “best-loved veterans of the Washington music scene” has no relation to the 100-year-old school’s namesake—a Civil War-era general who was renowned for his work in education—but offered to do a benefit concert after learning about the school and its work in bringing the arts to D.C. public school students.
“We are delighted and honored that Mr. Eaton has generously offered his talents to help our school raise the much-needed funds that introduce our children to music, dance, and visual arts,” said Dale Mann, principal of John Eaton Elementary.
The concert is open to the entire D.C. community. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased on the school’s website.

This performance will directly support the music and visual arts programs at John Eaton Elementary School. Refreshments will be served.

All are welcome!

$1067 sound right for a studio without a full kitchen?

Ed. Note: I lived in one of these in 1998, at that time rent was $500. Man, I’m getting old…

Dear PoPville,

I live on the 3000 block of Macomb St, NW directly across from the International School and the Tregaron Conservancy. Last week i noticed large signs with permits and plans to build a single family home seemingly directly beside the Intl School’s driveway. Construction will take up the parking spaces along the front of the property and will last until next May… Any idea whats going on? I was under the impression that as a conservancy it would be illegal to build on the land… Since last week they have started to remove all of the large trees along the front of the property. And apparently there are 2 single family homes going up.

From a press release:

“Ripple is pleased to announce the appointment of Alison Reed as pastry chef of the 120-seat modern American Cleveland Park restaurant. Reed, who served as pastry chef at Cafe St. Ex for four years, will assume her new position on January 1, 2012.

“Alison is an exceptionally talented pastry chef, and we are thrilled to have her join our team,” said owner Roger Marmet. “Her desserts not only compliment Chef Logan Cox’s inventive culinary style, but they also showcase the same dedication to house-made products and grower connections that Cox demonstrates in his savory fare.”

Reed’s appointment will allow the restaurant to significantly expand and evolve its offerings. In addition to providing a greater selection of seasonal dessert options on a nightly basis, Reed will be responsible for all bread and ice cream production, both of which will come in handy when Ripple opens its retail market in the first quarter of 2012.

“Alison and I share a similar passion for supporting our local farm community and her appointment brings us to our goal of offering guests a broad, full selection of desserts and breads made exclusively in-house using local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients,” said Cox.

Prior to Reed’s tenure at Cafe St. Ex, she served as a pastry cook at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC, where she assisted with development and creation of all pastries for the 400 room luxury hotel, Cafe Mozu, the Empress Lounge, and in-room dining. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Reed dedicates a large portion of her time to charity and volunteer work, teaching Ross Elementary School students healthy eating habits, and participating in numerous fundraising events, including the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance’s annual “Women Chefs Turn up the Heat” event, and Share Our Strength’s “Taste of the Nation” event.

Ripple is located at 3417 Connecticut Avenue, NW”
