I’ve often wondered how Capitol Video Sales was able to stay in business, located at 514 8th Street, SE next to Belga Cafe. Looks like the video store will be closing soon and in its place hopes to come Pacifico. From a liquor license application that recently went up:

“New Restaurant, Latin tapas, open grill, salads and contemporary cooking with recorded music.
Seating Capacity is 120. Total occupancy load including Summer Garden is 185. Sidewalk Café with seating for 30.”

I say “they hope to open up in their space” because Nichole recently reminded me of a post about an ANC 6B (which covers Barracks Row) liquor license moratorium on The Hill is Home:

“The commission decided that a blanket protest of all new [liquor license] requests — instead of determining on a case-by-case basis — would be the best course of action until a solution is identified to fix the “over-saturation of restaurants” on 8th Street.”

Though the THIH also notes:

“A protest from the ANC does not necessarily mean that the business cannot get their liquor license, it just means that the ANC is advising the ABC board to deny it.”

The dreaded “Adams Morganization” of the area was also evoked…

Personally, I think a Latin Tapas restaurant would be a fantastic addition to Barracks Row. And remember it’s not impossible to get a liquor license when ANC opposition exists.

A good example of this is the recent liquor license that Big Bear Cafe obtained in Bloomingdale, despite an ANC objection.

Do you think too many restaurants are starting to open up on 8th St, SE? It’ll be interesting to see how the desire for more mixed retail options plays out on Barracks Row. And whether or not ANC opposition scuttles any new restaurants hoping to open up there.

And a related question: When will the final bell toll for nearby Blockbuster? Tick tock…

The Craigslist ad says:

“Mid-Sized studio in classic Victorian Era apartment building near Lincoln Park and Eastern Market.

Wood floors, high ceilings, large windows. Historic building with lots of modern amenities: new kitchen and new central a/c and heat, cable and wi-fi options, onsite laundry room, resident manager. The building also has a roof deck with one of the best views on Capitol Hill.

Great location: 1/2 block south of Lincoln Park, 10 minute walk to Eastern Market.

Sorry, no short term rentals, no furnished apartments, no pets (cats ok).”

Does $1195 sound reasonable for a studio here?

We spoke real briefly in the beginning of Oct. about DC-3 coming to 423 8th St. SE. When I was walking by last weekend they were kind enough to invite me in for a look and let me know that they’ll be opening up on Wed. Nov. 10th. Looks like they’re gonna win the battle with Chidogo, another hot dog place coming to U St, NW. DC-3 is from the guys behind Matchbox and has an airplane theme inside. They actually have an old DC-3 propeller blade on the wall:

The final touches were still being worked on when I stopped by but if the photos of the options are any indication – this place is going to be very successful:

Lots more photos, including inside and more hot dog options, after the jump. (more…)

Wow, H St, NE’s Biergarten Haus may soon be getting some competition. I was super psyched to see that a new place is looking to come to 720 L St, SE just south of Barracks row past the Southeast freeway:

It is just empty parking lot at the moment but there is a good bit of space so you can definitely see the potential. The liquor license application says:

“New tavern, beer garden with European/American Food. Number of seats 99, summer garden 200 seats, total occupancy load is 399.”

While it’s not super close to a metro it is near a bike share station which is good enough for me. Obviously I’ll be following these developments closely and will post as more info becomes available. What do you guys think – can DC support two proper beer gardens?

More excitement for new bars/restaurants coming to Barracks Row and Capitol Hill. The current Capitol Hill Sports Goods and Apparel located at 727 8th St, SE will become 8th Street Bar & Grill according to an alcohol application permit. It sounds promising:

“New Tavern with American cuisine, dancing and five piece bands playing Jazz, Blues, Rock & Roll. Seating capacity is 66. Total occupancy load is 66. Sidewalk Café with seating for 6.”

The reader writes:

“I can’t get over looking at the listing for this house. Great location. Great stained glass and other original detailing. And on the tiniest postage stamp of a lot I’ve ever seen. The listing claims a 288 square foot lot; it also claims that the four-story house is 1500 square feet, so obviously one of those numbers is incorrect, but still: tiny. I’m curious whether other PoP readers think the location and curb appeal are worth having a bedroom three floors up from the laundry closet and rooms where you can touch both walls.”

This is a wild one! I’ve def. featured the stained glass before so I was psyched to get a peek inside. I freaking love it. So it’s no surprise that it is under contract already. What do you guys think? Would it be a pain going up and down the stairs? Was this 2 bed/2.5 bath a good deal for $485,500? Do you think it went for more?

In yesterday’s judging of Hunan Dynasty a commenter mentioned Pete’s Diner located around the corner at 212 2nd St. SE. Here’s a place that looks awesome that I’ve always wondered about but instantly forget about until the next time I walk past it. So what’s the overall word here? Any must order items?
