“What: Special coffee cupping, free espresso giveaways and discussion with top coffee roaster
Where: Pound The Hill, 621 Penn Ave SE, Eastern Market Metro
Who: Head Roaster of Kickapoo Coffee (2010 Micro-Roaster of the Year), Owners/Baristas from Pound, Coffee Enthusiasts
When: Saturday, 11/5, 2-4pm

As you may know, we are the only shop on the east coast that carries Kickapoo Coffee and we’ve become one of their largest clients. Kickapoo, selected as the number 1 micro-roaster in the country in 2010 by Roast Magazine, is a small buy very high quality boutique roaster out of Wisconsin who is dedicated to fair trade, organic coffees. The owner and head roaster of Kickapoo, Caleb Nicholes, is stopping over in DC on his way to meet with some new coffee growers in Ethiopia and is spending the afternoon at Pound giving away espresso and conducting a cupping to allow coffee connoisseurs and newbies alike to be able to recognize and appreciate the subtle differences from one roast or region of coffee to another.

Caleb will be at our store starting at 2pm and we will conduct the cupping at 3pm. In order to join for the cupping, people interested must email us at [email protected] to get on the list as cuppings are done with a limited, intimate group. But the free espresso is for everyone that comes by and they will get to taste up to three different espressos from Kickapoo and chat with the head roaster himself!”

It was pretty clear that commenters to the original Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post expected the price of this home to get bid up. And bid up it did, to $60,000. over the listed price.

The home was not very large, but there’s definitely an appeal to many people for being in the heart of Capitol Hill (and this is in the actual subdivision of Capitol Hill, rather than in Old City). Since November 2010, in addition to the sale of the subject property, the subdivision of Capitol has seen exactly three fee simple sales under half a million dollars.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

A pretty unique one for Capitol Hill. I was digging it even more yesterday with all the shadows.

The folks inside said they had a grand opening 2 weeks ago but I think there was previously an Asian restaurant in this space at 312 Pennsylvania Ave SE. At any rate – they’ve got Pho. You can see their full menu here.

Ah cool, looks like they are related to the folks from North Sea in Adams Morgan. Their Web site says:

“With North Sea Restaurant’s 25 years Chinese & Japanese culinary experience in Adams Morgan, owner Annie now brings her food and service to Capitol Hill. Come and enjoy our authentic Asian food.

Japanese cuisine will be available in Oct 3rd.”

Anyone try the Pho?

First a fire at the Tune Inn in June then the recent closure of Hawk n Dove, the 300 block of Pennsylvania Ave, SE was due for some good news. And it got it. I was able to get some preview photos yesterday and the post fire renovations look great at 331 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. I think Tune Inn did an amazing job of maintaining the charm of the classic bar while making it super comfortable and good looking. Some finishing touches were ongoing yesterday but the photos will give you an indication of how sweet the renovation looks. They couldn’t give an exact time but said they’d be opening Friday afternoon.

Lots more photos including a look at the menu after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

What was originally supposed to be Joseph A. Banks, men’s clothier, will now be Yes! Market on the corner of 8th and Pennsylvania Ave. SE [514 8th Street, SE]. This was previously a Blockbuster. I wonder if the current Yes Market located between 6th and 7th and Pennsylvania Ave. will be closing. Any word on that?”

Wild. I spoke to an employee at the YES! store located at 658 Pennsylvania Ave SE and they say the Barracks Row location will be open in about six months. She also believes that the 658 Pennsylvania Ave SE store will remain open as well. Barrackrow.org now says:

“Yes! Organic Market announced today that they are relocating from their current Capitol Hill location at 658 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE to the former Blockbuster Video space on Barracks Row at 410 8th Street, Southeast.”

So if you live on Capitol Hill you’ll have lots of options to get your YES! Organic Market goods. Think the neighborhood can support the two stores?

Anyone disappointed that the Jos A Bank didn’t come through?

Ed. Note: Those interested in the history of the Erol’s video store can read about it here.
