Yesterday a reader tweeted the photo above and asked:

@PoPville do u know whats going in beside Belga on 8th St SE?”

Back in Nov. 2010 we learned that Capitol Video Sales was closing at 514 8th Street, SE and a new restaurant called Pacifico would open in the space. From their liquor license application:

“New Restaurant, Latin tapas, open grill, salads and contemporary cooking with recorded music.
Seating Capacity is 120. Total occupancy load including Summer Garden is 185. Sidewalk Café with seating for 30.”

Looks like they’ll have a great roof deck too. This is another restaurant from Xavier Cervera who also owns Lola’s Barracks Bar & Grill, Molly Malone’s, the Chesapeake Room, Senart’s Oyster & Chop House, Boxcar Grill, the currently being renovated Hawk n Dove, and the Park Tavern restaurant coming to Navy Yard.

Last week a reader nominated 624 8th St NE for a horse’s ass award. Thanks to another alert reader for sending an update:

Substitute Trustees’ Sale: Buildings Under Construction near the H Street Corridor in NE Washington, DC
624 8th Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002

Dear PoPville,

I live in the 700 block of 8th St NE and have for about 20 months. There is what appears to be a halted-construction condo building at 624 8th St NE. This shows a church that was sold in 2005 (and obviously razed), and the Google maps street view shows the new construction.

Any clue what is going on here? It’s pretty prime real estate these days, which makes it all the more odd that nothing seems to have happened there in the entire time I have lived there. They look mostly finished.

From a press release:

“Winter of 2012, restaurateurs and chefs Ari Gejdenson (AcquaAl 2) and Erik Yang (Toki Underground) will open a new restaurant in Washington D.C. helmed by Chef Johnny Spero (Komi and Townhouse) under the name of SŪNA. The food will offer Spero’s unique perspective on modern progressive cuisine reflecting both his professional and personal experiences. SŪNA’s menu will be based on sustainability, a conscious effort in regards to sourcing, supporting local farms, sustainability, and what is available regionally and by season.”

Toki chef Erik Yang revealed the space will be in Eastern Market but didn’t reveal an exact location. So I have a couple guesses for where they may look – the old BaBay space at 633 Pennsylvania Ave, SE or the old Village Gallery at 705 North Carolina Ave, SE. I don’t know if I’d call BaBay as Eastern Market but it has the advantage of already having a kitchen. The old Village Gallery space would need a complete build out but it is right outside Eastern Market. You have any guesses of where the new restaurant may be located?

Stay tuned.

So many new spots coming to Union Station. This Jamba Juice is coming to the space next to the also coming soon (but it really looks close to opening now) Einstein Bros. Bagels on the first floor towards the eastern end. Jamba Juice’s Facebook page says:

“Smoothies, smoothies and more smoothies. Fresh-squeezed juices. Yogurt and fruit blends. Wheat grass shots. Slow-cooked, steel-cut oatmeal made with 100% organic oats. Healthy baked goods. Immortality. Wait – we don’t actually offer immortality per se, but we can make your feel pretty freaking healthy.”

660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE

In late Feb. we learned that Sapore Oil and Vinegar was coming to the old Quiznos space at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE by Eastern Market. I took a sneak peek yesterday and lovers of olive oil are going to be in heaven.

They had 18 olive oils and 15 vinegars:

They even have one honoring the local fire house:

Here are all the details from a press release:

DC’s first fresh oil and vinegar specialty store opens March 18 at 660 Pennsylvania Avenue SE in Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market neighborhood. Sapore, Italian for “taste” or “flavor”, will feature 30 types of single varietal and flavor infused extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars plus gourmet pastas, olives, sea salts, spice blends, accessories and cookbooks. According to owner Renee Farr, Sapore is a boutique culinary retail store designed to capture the growing trend of customers wanting pure authentic foods that are healthy.

She says that true extra virgin olive oil, fresh from pressing, has a flavorful taste that grocery store oils do not. Sapore’s oils will be available in traditional varietals and flavor infused selections along with white and dark balsamic vinegars. “Sapore will round out the oils and vinegars with complementary gourmet products like sea salts and handcrafted spice blends.” she said.

Customers will be able to sample every oil and vinegar. Displayed in Italian-made stainless steel containers, called fustis, the oils and vinegars encircle the 950 square-foot store. Farr has developed recipe cards that detail creative uses for the international

Looks like we got a beauty salon battle coming to Barracks Row. A new salon is coming to 737 8th St, SE in the former Capitol Asset Realty space. This is right next door to A List Nails and Spa which recently opened in the old Attitude gallery. Could mean some good discounts. Unless, of course, A List is simply expanding next door? Stay tuned.
