I feel like the old Capitol Hill Art and Frame shop has been vacant for ages at 623 Pennsylvania Ave, SE next to Pound the Hill. It finally has a tenant – Beuchert’s Saloon. The liquor license application posted out front says:

“A full service restaurant & Bar serving local, farm-fresh menu items prepared for lunch, brunch and dinner 7 days a week with a seating capacity of 47 for patrons and a total load of 61. Request a summer garden with 20 seats.”

Sounds promising!

Then and Now by the House History Man is a series by Paul K. Williams. Paul has been researching house histories in DC since 1995, having completed more than 1,500 to date. Read Paul’s previous post here.

The large house at 420 Constitution Avenue, NE on Capitol Hill was the longtime home to Samuel Hamilton Walker and his family. And by long time, I mean long time: from the time they moved into the newly completed house shortly after their wedding in 1872, Mrs. Susan Walker at least, would live there for the next 70 years, until her death in 1942. Samuel Walker would live there until his death in 1938.

Walker is one of those individuals who doesn’t get much press today, but during his life he was well known in Washington. Why? He built hundreds of houses, especially on NE Capitol Hill, including most of those found on his own block. He had his own real estate development company, located in the Walker Building at 458 Louisiana Avenue (since razed). He was a DC native, having been born here in 1844, and after obtaining a degree from Columbian College, began working in the city’s land record’s office. His national Capital Investment Company eventually built the District Building, which he wisely rented to the city.

Walker had volunteered to defend Washington for four days during the Civil War without enlistment, and that led to him being named the Major and Superintendent of the Police Department in 1886. The Walker house remains at the corner of Constitution and B Streets, NE, partly obscured by trees. The ornate railing atop the corner turret has unfortunately disappeared, however.

From Facebook:

First of all we’d like to thank everyone for their support in the past few days. Now we are asking for your help. For those of you who don’t know let’s catch you up to speed. On the morning of May 1st Boone, one of our bartenders, was walking a young lady home when a mugger snatched her purse. Boone took the purse back and wound up in a fight with the mugger. Seconds later Boone realized that he had been stabbed multiple times. After being airlifted to Med Star and undergoing a few surgeries he is miraculously walking around. However he’ll be out of work for awhile and is going to need our support. Therefore we’re [Trusty’s – 1420 Pennsylvania Ave SE] putting on fundraiser Wednesday the 16th to help him. We’ll be doing raffles throughout the night plus passing around the hat a few times. For those who can’t attend you can still help by donating directly to his paypal account to [email protected]. We just ask that you send it as a gift.

The Post reported:

“Police arrested James Moyler, 43, of no fixed address, minutes later, charging him with assault and robbery. They said he robbed the woman, then stabbed the man when he tried to intervene.”

Acacia Gourmet has opened at 325 Pennsylvania Ave, SE in the former Wellness Cafe space on Capitol Hill. Coming from the owners of Acacia Bistro & Wine Bar in Van Ness (4340 Connecticut Ave NW) they write on their Facebook page:

“Well all of us here at Acacia Bistro have been very busy with our newest addition. Acacia Gourmet has officially opened. Acacia Gourmet is a “from scratch” deli. We roast our own beef, turkey and chicken to make the best heros, panini’s, salads, burgers, reubens, and sausages. For dessert a hot from the oven Blueberry crumb.”

Looks like a good lunch option.
