The Craigslist ad says:

“Totally renovated English Basement studio apartment with great kitchen, wall-to-wall carpeting, washer/dryer, gas fireplace, and lots of closet space. Round bay window and drywall ceiling with great recessed lighting makes the place bright and airy. Two-car off-street parking.

Bloomingdale is a great location for anyone who is working on the Hill or downtown. Half a block from Big Bear Cafe, walking distance to Windows Cafe, Yoga District, and Timor Bodega organic grocer. On Sundays there is a popular farmer’s market.”

Does $1175 sound reasonable for this studio english basement?

Wow, I can’t believe there is finally movement at the old flower shop on Wisconsin Ave, NW just south of Macomb. It’s been vacant for years. Anyone hear what might be going in there?

While not everyone is looking forward to a drycleaners at the corner of 1st and Seaton Streets, NW in Bloomingdale, you have to admit the building is looking great, right? You can see what the building looked like in the beginning of Dec. ’09 here.

And, sadly, I still don’t have much hope that Baraki at nearby 1st and T Streets, NW will open their doors anytime soon…

Old Firehouse located at 1626 North Capitol Street, NW

Thanks to a reader for sharing the following info from a neighborhood message board titled Firehouse News from Brian Brown: “Signed the lease with the restaurant/lounge operator for the firehouse” :

“The firehouse restaurant is moving forward… We also are working with three other operators who wish to open restaurants and/or pubs along North Capitol Street. Two of them have already identified sites and are negotiating the terms of the leases with the landlord.”

Potentially exciting news for Bloomingdale. North Capitol seems like more of a commercial district than 1st Street, NW so do you think it will be easier for new restaurants to get alcohol licenses here or will they face some of the same obstacles that Big Bear Cafe has faced over its alcohol application?

“A lot of people seem to comment about how “generic” some of the flips are that you feature in the Good Deal or Not posts, so I’m curious what folks have to say about a place like this: lots of character, but needs some updating. They’re missing bathroom and bedroom photos, but I love the old details.”

Do you guys think this 3 bed/3bath is reasonably priced at $445,000?

I had been wondering what the status of the McMillan Reservoir development was. The McMillian Reservoir blog has 2 posts and doesn’t provide a lot of hope for any progress soon.

Wikipedia says, “The 25 acre (100,000 m²) McMillan Reservoir, located between Michigan Avenue, North Capitol Street, and First Street in Northwest Washington, D.C., was designated a DC Historic Landmark in 1991.”

In Feb. 2009 the WBJ wrote:

“The recession appears to have slowed the project considerably, and construction is likely years away.

Because of McMillan’s former use, a lot of work has be done before the fenced-off land can be used for anything. Underneath is a catacomb of tunnels that were used to clean drinking water from the reservoir. The tunnels connect to roughly 2,100 manhole covers and the grassy surface.

The developers estimate demolition, grading, engineering, utilities, roads, planning and other preparation work will cost more than $50 million, which is forcing the team is to get as much revenue-producing development as possible on the site.”

Any guesses to when work may begin? I’ll set the over under at 2015.

A very disturbing note from the Bloomingdale blog:

“As of last night, (Saturday) three young men have been mugged and beaten by teens who then robbed them. These three muggings and robberies happened over the past two to three weeks. Police were called two of the three times.

Michele, the Dutch student, is now in the hospital with his jaw broken in three places and missing teeth from a mugging last night at First and T Streets NW. He has a concussion. It was nighttime. The other two muggings were on North Capitol Street in broad daylight.”

“Dear PoP,

Join us for a day filled with fun, food and friends! This annual event is in support of our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to the development and maintenance of Crispus Attucks Park. This private community park is located in the heart of Bloomingdale in the alley space behind North Capital & 1st Streets and U and V Streets NW.

and this is a link to a description that includes pictures from last year’s sale and a map to the park

and this is a link to the park web page“.

We recently spoke about the park here.

I thought this was pretty cool. I stumbled on a little coffee bean roasting going on outside Timor Bodega, located at 200 Rhode Island Ave, NW, and considered arguably the best bodega in the city. So the funny thing is that as I was talking to the guy roasting the beans he turns out to be a Petworth resident and recent PoP t-shirt winner. Small city.
