Yesterday we learned the great news that it looked like Mellow Mushroom pizza was coming to Adams Morgan. I’m happy to report that the speculation has now been confirmed by Mellow Mushroom. In an email they tell me that Mellow Mushroom will be opening up in July 2011 (not May) and they are currently renovating the old 18th and Red space at 2436 18th St, NW.

Another reader writes that a roof deck will likely be included though I haven’t confirmed that info yet.

But for those who were excited about the prospect of a Mellow Mushroom Pizzeria coming to DC – it is now confirmed for July 2011 coming to 2436 18th St, NW. From yesterday’s discussion it sounds like a big score for Adams Morgan.

On Friday we talked about Boston’s Upper Crust Pizzeria which will be opening a DC location downtown at 1747 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. At the time a reader asked if Mellow Mushroom Pizza was still coming to Adams Morgan in DC. I hadn’t heard of Mellow Mushroom but their Web site says:

“Mellow Mushroom opened in 1974 when three college students founded a business that reflected their eccentric philosophies. They saw pizza baking as an art form, and wanted to bring joy to others by exercising their art. The first store was created out of an old liquor store on Spring Street near Georgia Tech. To accommodate the long lines and gaining popularity, more Mellow Mushrooms sprung up around Atlanta.”

And indeed when you go to their future franchises page (screen shot above) you see Washington DC (with a photo of 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan) opening in May ’11.

Think they’ll be able to break the jumbo slice monopoly in Adams Morgan?

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

The Craigslist ad says:

“ONE BEDROOM LOFT STYLE APARTMENT AVAILABLE immediately for move in. Large windows, high ceilings, gas fireplace and balcony.

Our apartment homes feature a fully equipped kitchen (dishwasher, garbage disposal and electric range). Hardwood floors, granite countertops, washer/dryer combo and spacious bathroom!!! All utilities and internet included in one price for all $2,500.”

I’ve always liked this building from the outside (I think I’ve nominated it for a ‘best spot for a morning cup of coffee’ as well.) Are you surprised that a one bedroom is going for $2,500 or does that sound about right?

“Dear PoP,

What’s the deal with Snap on 18th St.? It opened months ago, at first the hours were from 5pm-1am, or something like that geared toward the evening/late night Adams Morgan crowds. Then it changed its hours to open during the day, and that lasted a few months? Now it’s completely close all the time. I haven’t seen it open for weeks! Got any inside dirt?”

Hmm, I stopped by this weekend and on Sat. there were open around 3pm. I can understand the confusion, though, because the hours Mon. – Fri. are a bit unusual. They are open in Adams Morgan, Mon. – Fri. from 6pm – 11pm and on Sat. and Sun. from 10am – 11pm.

Do you guys think these hours make sense?

Snap is located in the old CD Exchange between Caliyogurt and Saki on 18th St, NW. There is also a Georgetown location at 1062 Thomas Jefferson St NW. Interestingly, the Georgetown location’s hours are listed as Mon-Sun 9 am – 11 pm.

Does anyone know what the story is with this vacancy? It is totally separate from the Harris Teeter? Any ideas on why it is so hard to find a tenant (it seems to have been vacant for ages)? You think it is just an odd size space or simply the rent is too high or the location is tough? Seems like the Harris Teeter is doing well so I’m wondering what’s up with this space…

Back in Nov. a reader wrote in asking if Stroga was being used as a nightclub on weekends.

Stroga gym is located at 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW. Their Web site says:

“The building has a rich and romantic history, and with its fine woodwork, imported stained glass and intricate moldings STROGA is sure to take your breath away. It’s the perfect location to hold your special event!

The space is available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate meetings, luncheons, and dinners, fundraisers, dances, private parties, and much more.”

For those who voiced concerns earlier, today’s meeting could be a good opportunity to let them know.  And get some light refreshments…

I don’t know if this should be a horse’s ass award because I’m really grateful that the amazing Toulouse-Lautrec mural has been preserved. According to Cultural Tourism DC:

“This portrait of cabaret singer Aristide Bruant by fin-de-siécle Parisian artist Toulouse-Lautrec has presided over the night life of Adams Morgan for 20 years. The mural was painted from a photograph by the restaurant’s original owner, André Neveux. Although Neveux considered himself only an amateur, the image has entranced pedestrians and lured diners throughout several changes in the club’s ownership. ”

Having noted that, it does seem like the space has been vacant for ages. Anyone know how long? At one point I heard a restaurant was going in but then I haven’t heard anything in a while. What’s the word on this great building?
