“Dear PoP,

On my walk home tonight there were a ton of police officers, fire trucks, and ambulances all over the place. The roads were barricaded off and they weren’t letting people down Euclid St, Mozart St, 17th St, and Fuller St. One police officer told me that it was barricaded because someone was threatening to hurt themselves and other people. Do you have any idea what was going on? Or if the situation was resolved?”

I try to cover incidents like this, as info becomes available, on twitter @PoPville here. At first all we heard was that there was some type of barricade situation going on. Following is the official word from MPD:

“We received a call to assist The Dept of Health and Human Services and there were threats made to one of the workers.

All ended well and no arrests at this time.”

From an email:

“Starting tomorrow, Tuesday the 9th, we’ll be showing two features (9pm and 11pm) every Tuesday night at MiG Bar on an 80 inch projector screen. The inaugural night will feature, perhaps somewhat predictably, Red Dawn and DC Cab.

Future features will surely include an attack dose of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and lots of David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch and Hitchcock.”

MiG is located at 2226 18th st NW upstairs.

We’ve judged the building but now it’s time to judge the bar. Jack Rose is located at 2007 18th St, NW. Their Web site says:

“Jack Rose Dining Saloon, a true DC establishment crafted from the minds of DC natives & longtime friends Bill Thomas, Stephen King, & Michael Hartzer. At Jack Rose Dining Saloon one can experience over 1400 bottles of hand-selected scotches, bourbons & spirits, uniquely hand-crafted cocktails, wines from around the world, and over 20 beers on draft. On the first floor you will find our main saloon bar that seats up to 35 and a full-service dining room. Hosting your own event? Our second floor has an elegant private dining lounge with it’s own balcony and fireplace. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, hang out on the open-air terrace and enjoy snacks from the BBQ Pit or grab a drink on the Back Porch Bar…feeling like hiding out?… head down to the Prohibition Bar “no secret knock” required. At Jack Rose Dining Saloon, one can sense the ties and tributes between the region, and the long history of the spirits that line the shelves.”

The road construction on 18th Street is a bit of an obstruction but has anyone stopped by yet?

“Dear PoP,

Any update on the proposed Mellow Mushroom coming to the old 18th and Red location?

Looks as though work has started (the ground floor slab has been excavated for utilities) but from the looks of it there is no way a July opening will happen, I’m thinking early september-ish. Im originally from Atlanta and since reading about it on your site I have been salivating. I need bbq chicken pizza and spinach salad with esperanza dressing.”

I spoke with the owners a couple of weeks ago and they say the opening has been a bit delayed because of the difficulties involved in “getting an old rowhouse in the proper structural shape”. While they hoped to be open in July, I’m now told if all goes well they’ll be shooting for a September opening. I’m guessing late Sept. Of course, I’ll be sure to update as they get closer to opening with an exact date.

Mellow Mushroom will be located at 2436 18th St, NW.

From MPD:

MPD wishes to thank all that came out to “The District” last night to discuss the planned tactics used in enhancing the Adams Morgan area. We all feel it was very prodctive and informative across the board as was all the previous meetings that were held leading up to last night. As a result of last nights information sharing group discussion, MPD has decided to adjust the tactics utilized. MPD will no longer restrict parking in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of 18th Street on the weekends as previously laid out to all.

Are you glad parking will not be restricted? I believe the initial plan was to restrict parking after 10pm on those blocks.

We previously spoke about Operation Adams Morgan here.

From an MPD press release:

After a long series of planning and collaborative sessions with the citizens and businesses of Adams Morgan, the Adams Morgan BID and various concerned stakeholders that provided information by either telephone or internet, MPD has announced the start of the first phase of “Operation Adams Morgan”.

Over the next few weekends, MPD will deploy more officers and resources into the Adams Morgan area then seen in many years. This will be completed without affecting the deployments of any other community.

The initial phase will begin this weekend with minor parking restrictions along 18th Street and gradually progress into a full compliment of uniformed and undercover officers conducting various operations while teaming up with several city agencies (DPW, DDOT, ABRA) in addition to members of The Guardian Angels. The collaborative effort will target underage drinking, drunk driving, alcohol and narcotic related offenses as well as many quality of life issues and concerns.

Phase one of “Operation Adams Morgan” will continue until later this year when MPD’s redistricting program is implemented and places additional manpower and available resources evenly across the entire patrol district.

The Metropolitan Police Department want to thank all that took part in the brainstorming and strategic planning stages of this endeavor and will stay committed to ensurung we are all working towards achieving a safer community for all.

Personally I think this is a great thing for Adams Morgan especially after seeing how out of control things can get.

Though, out of curiosity, I’d be interested to learn how they are able to implement such an operation while it “will be completed without affecting the deployments of any other community.”
