A reader sends word that the Streets Market and Cafe website is now live (though mostly a holding page):

“Our Top Priorities

Build honest relationships of trust and loyalty with our customers
Offer a wide variety of wholesome quality products
We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of customer service
Be a supportive partner to our communities”

And ‏@bustyredhead sends an updated photo showing the store nearly stocked. Will they open before Friday?

“Dear PoPville,

FYI – Big tractor trailer out in front of the new Streets market unloading foodstuffs into the store. Seems like they’ll beat Trader Joe’s to market?

Do you have any insight into who is behind this market? Seems like a mix between a grocer, a cafe, and prepared foods – similar to Glenn’s but by the look of it with a far more robust grocery option. I would love to know who these guys are.”

Nobody seems to know who the folks at Streets Market and Cafe are – it remains a mystery to me!

‏@bustyredhead tweets us a photo of the stocking up this morning:

From the LA Times:

“Safeway Inc. said Wednesday it is in talks about potentially selling itself, finally addressing buyout rumors that began last year after the grocery giant deflected a takeover bid.

Buyout rumors surfaced in October with reports that private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management was involved in talks to buy some or all of Safeway. Cerberus owns a supermarket business that operates Albertsons and Shaw’s.”

Anyone familiar with Albertsons and/or Shaw’s supermarkets?

Since some of us become a bit obsessed with groceries when it snows, I thought this was a good time to share this reader request:

“I would love to see ask people where they go for “cheap” groceries. With Yes!, Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and soon Trader Joe’s, I’m curious to see what, if any, break down others have in what they buy where for the best deal.”

Back in February of last year we first learned that the former Z Mart space located at 806 H St, NE would become a Chez Hareg Organic Market. They were originally supposed to open in April but there had been very little visible progress. At some point the coming soon sign had also disappeared. I’m happy to share some photos from a reader that show the market is still coming. Updates when they open.
