Here’s a bit of a random Friday Question of the Day but since I’ve been hearing a bunch of news stories about it, I’ve been wondering if folks have been thinking about the threat of swine flu or H1N1 supposedly coming in full force this Fall. My question is rather simple – are you concerned about it? Will you change any of your behaviors, ie avoiding going to crowded places? Are you going to get vaccinated as soon as that becomes a viable option? Or are you not thinking about it and will react when/if it hits DC in the coming months?

A bit of a dark FQoTD but I’m curious how folks feel…

This is a rather vague one for the moment but more details to come soon. In the meantime a reader writes:

“Would you support the uses of Eminent Domain by the DC government for urban revitalization project within your community?

The Supreme Court ruled that the uses of eminent domain for community benefit was just (Kelo v. City of New London), where the court agreed with the City of New London that the general benefits a community enjoyed from redevelopment and economic growth qualified as a permissible “public use” under the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment.

Meaning that the Govt can uses eminent domain to gain control of a property and then offer it up for redevelopment to private developers. The city has used eminent domain to gain control of land in the following projects:

“Dear PoP,

I recently read about NYC’s Summer Streets event, where the NYC DOT completely closes Park Avenue from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge to automobile traffic for three Saturdays during August. It allows walkers, runners, and bikers to have complete use of several miles of Park Avenue without having to worry about cars getting in the way. It looks and sounds like a great idea. I’m curious to ask your readers if this concept might work in DC, and which street they think would be a good one to close…while not screwing up automobile traffic around the city too much. My suggestion is P Street, from Wisconsin Ave all the way to North Capital St, because it traverses many neighborhoods and is not too hilly. Although the two circles it intersects could pose a problem. What do you think? A link is below:

What a cool program. I definitely think it could work in DC. If they can close Park Avenue in NYC then we could def. close a street for a few days on the weekend over the summer. I think P Street is a great recommendation. I think they could also probably do U Street from 18th to 7th Street, NW. I actually think it would be cool if they did Pennsylvania Ave from the Capitol to the White House. What do you guys think?

“Dear PoP,

I’m a big fan of free speech – yay soapboxes for whackos – but shouldn’t there be restrictions on pure noise? I know this issue has popped up before – streetcorner idiots with amplifiers that can be heard two blocks away. These guys are particularly ugly, but I don’t really care what the cause is – I shouldn’t have to hear it over a loudspeaker in my neighborhood. Anyone know what the deal is? ”

I remember talking about these guys before. They’re often outside of the Columbia Heights metro. And I know that H Street, NE has dealt with a similar situation. I find them terribly irritating. But here is my serious FQoTD – how far does free speech extend? Can anyone set up outside the metro and spout whatever they want, whenever they want? Where is the balance between tranquility and free speech? Is it just a decibel level? Maybe I should set up next to them and start preaching about the beautiful life? Anyone got my back? Warning, I bruise and bleed easily…

I’d like to ask the natural follow up to a FQoTD from a couple weeks ago. So I had a few glasses of wine last night. But I also recently returned from a red eye flight from Phoenix and now have a brutal headache.

So, what I’m wondering is – what is the best hangover cure? Simply water? Gatorade? Any special recipes out there?

A comment in yesterday’s photo from PoPville got me thinking. What would be your favorite chain to bring to DC that we don’t already have?  For me, fortunately, I’m very lucky in that I’m a Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts fan both of which I can get to pretty easily, but not so easily that it’s dangerous. I suspect I may be a glutton for punishment as I expect we’ll get a few Arby’s recommendations. Yes, yes, we all want Arby’s but what others are people craving – White Castle, In-and-Out Burger, Peet’s coffee? We should be getting an IHOP in the near future. I know fast food is a dangerous topic but c’mon it’s Friday, I’m just tryin’ to have some fun.

So my attorney told me a while back about mixing Bushmills and Iced tea for the perfect summer drink. I finally did the mix. Holy cow, it’s delicious. Dangerously delicious. But in a very happy mellow state it got me thinking about the FQoTD. Since it’s summer it’s nice to have some lighthearted ones and I’d love to discover some new gems. I’ve also recently become acquainted with and enjoyed a gin fizz and believe it or not a mint julep. Bourbon on 18th Street makes a mean one. Or am I overthinking this and in reality nothing beats a nice cold beer?

So for a lazy July FQoTD – what’s your favorite summer drink?

“Dear PoP,

I watch the this show on The Food Network called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. The places featured are recommended by viewers. I have often wondered, if people around here (DC and surrounding locales) could recommend a restaurant to be featured on the show, what would that restaurant be? I struggle to think of place that is as eclectic, charming and also ahs amazing food as the places on the show. Could you ask your readers what they think? I ask because I would love to go places like those featured on this show.

If I am being vague or did not describe this well, let me know and I will clarify. Here is link to the show:

I would vote for the Florida Avenue Grill (photographed above). Can you think of restaurants in the DC area that are “eclectic, charming and also have amazing food”?

Well I am a bit embarrassed to admit but I went to Wolf Trap for the first time Wed. evening (for the Wilco concert). The place was absolutely amazing. The bring your own food and beverages is fantastic (especially when you have a designated driver). Granted Wilco was amazing but I’m definitely going to make an effort to hit Wolf Trap more often. But it got me thinking – how was it possible that I’ve lived in DC for 12 years and not visited Wolf Trap yet? So I think this could be a cool FQoTD for future reference for absolute must dos in the DC area (not just in Summer).

What is your absolute favorite event/activity/spot that should not be missed? It can be a hidden gem or something that you think is obvious (like Wolf Trap).

“Dear PoP,

There is a great article in the NYT about turf wars between vendors. Also, there is a new food vendor, Fojol Bros, that travels the city and serves Indian food and is all the rage. Apparently he dresses up as well.”

Wow, that sounds awesome. You can see the Fojol Bros menu here. Anyone give them a try? But for the Thursday Question of the day – what and where is your favorite food vendor in DC?
