Crafty Bastards
Between the
Fiesta DC festival in Mt. Pleasant and the Crafty Bastards event at the Marie Reed Community Center, the streets of Adams Morgan seemed unusually busy this past weekend.

Wall Street might be teetering on the brink of collapse but judging from the crowds at the annual Crafty Bastards event, investment bankers fallen on hard times might consider future careers as artisans.

The brilliantly named Crafty Bastards festival is now in its fifth year and seems to get bigger and better each time.

The Craft Fair
While many simply enjoy Crafty Bastards for bringing a lively festival atmosphere to the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon, the craft fair itself is serious business with nearly 147 booths out to displaying and selling crafty-creations.

Some were full-time artists who make their living from this – a group of artists drove down from Brooklyn especially for the event. For others their craft is a hobby and the Crafty Bastards event offered a great opportunity to put their products out in front of the public and gauge the reaction – verbal in the form of discussion with potential customers and financial in the form of actual sales.

The scale of the event (it’s massive) means it’s hard to do a proper summary of the goods on offer – there was simply too much to take it all in.

In addition to the usual mix of t-shirts, knit-wear, hand-made note cards, jewelry and kids clothes and toys I spotted some pretty cool puppets of various descriptions, some saucy ladies undergarments, customized luggage and loads more. Post continues after the jump with more photos at the end. If anyone else attended – what was your favorite part of Crafty Bastards? Do you like it better than Adams Morgan Day? (more…)

I had been waiting all month to go to Oktoberfest at the National Harbor, MD this past Saturday, when it was finally time to go the weather didn’t sound promising. The website said the event would take place rain or shine so we were excited anways. We met at a friend’s house and got dressed, that’s right, some of us dressed up in costume! (We were not the only ones)

We then headed out to the event around 1pm and got in the Will Call line to pick up our tickets. We were given bracelets and those of us who dressed up got a few extra beer tokens. The next line was to pick up our beerfest mugs and the rest of our tokens. We then headed to the main tent passing tons of seating and a live band playing German music. In the tents were venders selling jewelry, stines, wooden kegs, German foods and beer. 1 token would fill a 1/3 of your mug and 3 would top it off. Some vendors were very generous with these fill lines and others were very stingy. My favorite beer was a Sarnac Pomagranite Wheat beer. They offered a bunch of German beers as well as a couple of Irish beers and domestics. (I wish I had, had the foresight to take pictures of the signs that said what beers were at which stands so I could relay the offerings to you now, but unfortunately I was too drunk) On the other side of the main tent there was a stage with a guy playing your standard mix of American music with some of the party goers dancing on stage behind him.

Food offerings were brats with krout, pulled pork sandwiches, crab cakes, potato pancakes as well as cheeses, nuts and funnel cakes. My friend Erin and I decided to split a Chesapeake brat and a pulled pork sandwich, both were excellent! Another friend had the crab cake and said it was excellent! The funnel cake was also very tasty.

The weather was very humid with scatters of very light sprinklings here and there. At one point the sun came out and it was apparently pretty strong as I now have tan lines from the puffy sleeves on the beer girl costume I wore. The turn out was pretty good, although I had expected more people to show. I think the weather earlier in the day scared a lot of people off. This was also the National Harbor’s first year to host Oktoberfest so there were a few things that could have been better…they started running out of beer and brats around 2pm (the event ran til 8pm). We were a little disappointed with that, but all in all we had a great time and we willl probably go again next year. I think I would def recommend Oktoberfest at the National Harbor to anyone looking for a fun day, but definitely buy your tickets online for the cheaper price and be sure to hit up your beer selections and food earlier rather than later. If I had to give this a grade I would say B- More photos after the jump. (more…)

Holy awesome. I think this was my favorite Caribbean Day Parade yet. Every year I get down to Georgia and New Hampshire too early. And every year I say I’m not going to come as early next year. But man was it worth the wait. Everyone was in a super good mood. Despite the brutal heat, the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The music? Phenomenal. The dancing? Off the hook, as the kids say. The costumes? Brilliant. But of course words can do this parade no justice. So I’ll post some of my favorite photos after the jump and I’ll continue to post some cool pics throughout the week. So if you took any photos that you are particularly proud of send them to [email protected] and I’ll post throughout the week. Best photo gets a free PoP t-shirt of course. So what was your favorite part of the parade? (more…)
