“On Saturday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser will kick off the celebration of the 160th Anniversary of DC Emancipation Day. DC Emancipation Day honors the day President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, which freed over 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia.

The celebration kicks off at 2:00 p.m. with Mayor Bowser leading the DC Emancipation Day parade. The parade route is along Pennsylvania Ave NW (between 10th and 14th Streets NW) and will feature the DC Statehood Food Truck Palooza on the north side of Freedom Plaza. Food trucks on site will include gourmet hot dogs, soul food, pizza, ribs, Mexican food, and others.

Following the parade, at 3:00 p.m., the family-friendly All Star Emancipation Day Concert at Freedom Plaza will feature performances by Ceelo Green, Junkyard Band, Crystal Waters, Slick Rick, DJ Kool, Dior Ashley Brown and the Filthy Animals, Ramsey Renee, Alfredo Mojica & Friends, Crochet Kingpin, Jessey Lee, The Eastern High School Marching Band, The Nation’s Capital Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., and Miss District of Columbia 2021 Andolyn Medina singing our National Anthem. After a two-year COVID hiatus, the Sakura Taiko Fest is back! Join us in DC on March 26, 2022 for a full day of awesome drumming! We’ll have performances by Kyo Daiko, River City Taiko, Nen Daiko and Dounen Daiko, Miyako Taiko, MHTX, and students in the Mark H Taiko School so this is sure to be a spring event you do NOT want to miss!

The Sakura Taiko Fest has grown from a small concert first held in a dance studio to a full day of free, family-friendly taiko performances in downtown DC. Each year, we welcome a number of East Coast taiko groups and feature a variety of different taiko styles as a celebration of Japanese-American cultural and artistic traditions.

“For the first time ever, the National Gallery of Art will open its West Building for the beloved evening program formerly called NGA Nights. Three evening programs–on April 14, May 12, and June 9–will offer music, performances, pop-up experiences, and art-making activities throughout the West Building from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Light fare and drinks are available for purchase.

The April 14 event marks the return of in-person, evening programming since the spring 2020 season was canceled. It also offers the unique opportunity to enjoy a nighttime visit to Afro-Atlantic Histories, our major exhibition opening on April 10.

For the safety and enjoyment of all guests, registration is free but required, and capacity is limited. Registration for our April 14 event opens on Monday, March 21, at 10:00 a.m. Registration for May and June will open one month in advance: April 15 for the May 12 event, and May 13 for the June 9 event. The National Gallery will close to the public as usual at 5:00 p.m. and invite visitors to re-enter at Constitution Avenue and 6th Street NW after 6:00 p.m. At this time, face masks and proof of vaccine will not be required; we will communicate with registrants in advance if there are any updates to this policy.
