I just noticed that Color Me Mine closed up at 2439 18th St NW. Their Web site says:

“Color Me Mine closed its doors on Saturday, August 8th. We thank you for sharing so many memories with us!

Thank you again for supporting Color Me Mine! You can continue to paint your own pottery in Silver Spring, located at 823 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. For more information, please visit www.silverspring.colormemine.com/.”

And another salon is coming to 3114 Mt. Pleasant St, NW.

“Dear PoP,

Martha’s Outfitters is unique among DC thrift stores because we serve such a wide variety of people in the community and all the proceeds from our sales go to support our various programs – food, clothing and children!”

From Martha’s Table Mission:

“Martha’s Table finds solutions to poverty in the short term with food and clothing programs and in the long term by breaking the cycle of poverty with education and family strengthening programs.

Martha’s Table’s mission is to help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing and enrichment opportunities.”

Martha’s Outfitters is located at 2114 14th St, NW.

Tari, a “new and almost new couture clothing and accessories for men & women” is coming to 1525 Wisconsin Ave, NW.

And nearby at 1329 Wisconsin Ave, NW Bandolino is closing. I kinda feel like before Bandolino was at this location it used to be a dive bar. Anyone remember a dive bar on the second floor here? What was it called?

And finally the UGG shoe store has opened up at 1249 Wisconsin Ave NW.

Thanks to the owner for sending in the above pic – he writes:

“We are finally having our grand opening. Please check out the website www.modernmobler.com with an updated homepage, listing the promotional discounts & new drop-down section for video. New Fall Hours: Thursday – Sunday 11am – 7pm.

While we’re still awaiting a sign from the District through a grant, in the meantime you cant miss the furniture out front when we are open. Located between Fern & Geranium Streets in the Takoma section of NW DC; across from the main entrance to Walter Reed on Georgia Ave, just a half block further up towards downtown Silver Spring (next to Angelico’s Pizzeria).”

And Jessica who answers your ‘decorating and design’ questions writes:

“The Takoma metro is fairly close, and looks like the 70, 71, 79 and K1 bus lines run right to the store. I’m interested in hearing about what readers think of the store in it’s full swing and I’m especially excited to have a cool design venue right in MY neighborhood of Takoma/upper Georgia Avenue!” (7313 Georgia Ave NW)

Looks like something is finally going to replace the former space occupied by Flyy Couture at 823 Shepherd St, NW. Flyy/Finest Couture closed back in May ’09 though this is right next door to the recently opened Jamaican restaurant, Pink Snapper.

I had noticed that there was some lingerie in the window but thought it was just a leftover from the Flyy days. But then a reader wrote in asking what was going on so I went to take a closer look. And there is def. a lot of lingerie in the window (the store was closed when I stopped by) and a “stripper pole” in the center of the store (you can kinda see the pole through the door in the photo above). Perhaps lessons will be given? There is a sign in the store called goodies2go and shopgoodies2go.com but the Web site is not yet working.

“Dear PoP,

I went to Community Forklift in Hyattsville this weekend – its pretty awesome and I’m sure that fellow PoP readers would enjoy.

It is heaven for a those renovating a house on a strict budget. Cheap wood floors, doors, windows, appliances, tile…

they also have a very reasonable antique section. I got a trunk for $100 and a door that will soon be a headboard for $20.”

When we have spoken about renovation projects in the past, many readers bring up this great spot. I’m long overdue in giving them a separate post. Their Web site says:

“Community Forklift aims to:

* Lift up communities by making repairs and renovation more affordable for everyone in the community – homeowners, small businesses, charitable groups, etc.
* Reduce construction industry waste, keep reusable materials out of the landfill, and reduce the mining and harvesting of dwindling natural resources.
* Promote environmentally-friendly building materials and methods
* Develop career opportunities for nearby residents.”

You can find directions here.

“Dear PoP,

Union Row (2125 14th St, NW) seems to have its retail completely leased up now; the Sales Office has transferred to a new store that sells sliding doors. Oooo! And there’s a serious build-out going on in the last retail bay on V Street (next to Eatonville); the permits say build-out of an office, so not sure what to expect. But they’re adding a second floor (like the 2nd floor bar at Eatonville) so it’ll be interesting to see what goes in.”

Anyone know who is going in next to Eatonville?

“Dear PoP,

Just got back from what I thought was Pfeiffer’s only to see a new sign above the shop and in the door for “Old School” Hardware. I have noticed an increase in stock the last few times I have been in there and of course the new fancy credit card machine. Thankfully, the same friendly and VERY helpful people seem to be there. Wondering if your readers have any more info…”

The store’s new Web site, Old School Hardware says:

“Phrases like “Bon Voyage”, “Winning Lottery Ticket”, and “Yes, I would really like to go out on a date with you,” evoke a certain amount of excitement and spark one’s imagination.

We think “Hardware Store” fits into this category quite well.

Our store has the products you need to do everything from your “Honey Do” list to your home renovation project. With a little bit of planning, we can bring in almost any product that you might need.

Please let us know what we can do for you and thank you for shopping with us.

-Katie & Phil”

We’d be hearing for years that Pfeiffer’s, located at 3219 Mt. Pleasant Street NW, would be selling. Glad to see they stayed a hardware store. I once wondered if neighborhood hardware stores were doomed. But with the survival of Pfeiffer’s (with their new name) plus Fragers and others – DC’s hardware store’s seem to be holding tight.

Thanks to the reader for sending all the info. Anyone notice any differences at the new Pfeiffer’s – Old School Hardware?

Back in Nov. ’09 I was horrified to see the the building that houses Good Wood for sale at 1428 U Street, NW. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the sign saying EJF Real Estate Services were moving in. Fortunately when I spoke to the owners of Good Wood, they said they weren’t going anywhere but did expect their rent to be raised a bit. EJF would be taking over the 2nd and 3rd floors after a fixing up the space. That is a relief and while I think this is good news for the short term, I’m nervous about the long term…
