From an email:
“We’re really excited to be trying something new that will potentially improve quality of life for our employees.
I did just notice that there was quite a bit of heated debate going on in the comments so I wondered if you mind clarifying one point – we are paying people a much higher hourly wage than the $2.77 minimum (over 3 times the minimum), and have a few people on salary. We are also offering retirement plans and hope to offer health benefits in the future.
Also – We’re starting brunch service this weekend! Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 10:30am – 3:00pm, and will (fingers crossed) hopefully have beer & wine by the end of the week.”

928 U Street, NW
Update – thanks to a commenter for finding the facebook message:
“We’re sad to announce that the U-Street location will not be the re-opening of the New Orleans Cafe that we had hoped for. We hope to re-open one day, but we have no news on when, where or if it will happen. We love our customers and are so blessed to have had their patronage during the past two decades.”
A reader reports:
“Do you have any idea what happened to the new Bistro on U street that was opened about a month ago by the folks that operated Bardia’s New Orleans cafe in Adam’s Morgan? The new Bistro on U has been empty and closed for like two weeks now. I’m bummed because I thought it was a great value and a good addition to the neighborhood.”

1416 14th Street, NW just south of P Street
This is the former Carry Out Deli space that closed back in January. I’m told it will open next month and feature a combination of “Thai and Chinese” dishes. Note this is also located directly across the street from the former Playbill Cafe now set to become a Chinese Sushi Wine Bar.

“Walked by Texas de Brazil this morning. Looks like it is very close to opening. Hopefully it will do better than the Buddha Bar!”
You can see their menus here.

left to right – Timber Pizza Co. owners Chris Brady and Andrew Dana – with local developers Brie Husted, Lynn Yaudes, and Norm Veenstra
Back in March we learned (Another) Something Good’s Gonna Come to the 800 block of Upshur Street. And that something good is gonna be Timber Pizza Co.!
“The Timber guys serve authentic wood fired pizza using only the freshest local ingredients and incorporating new twists on traditional favorites. They can be found anywhere from local farmers markets to wineries/breweries and are available to cater your next private event.”
This will be their first brick and mortar location. If all goes well they hope to open January 1st. And when they do they’ll also be open for lunch. Another great addition to Upshur Street.

A group called Shaw neighbors tweets us:
“Work is finally starting on this long vacant property at 1547 7th Street in Shaw. A metro bus crashed into this building in 1997. We can’t wait for Ambar to open!”
This building was the once planned for El Centro II by Richard Sandoval.
Ambar Balkan Restaurant opened on Barracks Row back in Jan. 2013. Updates when more info is known.

“salon moves from 17th to r and old location now has notice of liquor license application 1636 17th)”
The liquor license placard for Brick Lane Restaurant (next to Tranquil Yoga) says:
“New restaurant with sidewalk café and a total occupancy load of 100.”
Updates when they get closer to opening.
Salon Rough no located on R Street:

3710 14th Street, NW
The early word is that this spot is very very good. Taqueria Habanero opened up here back in September of last year.

1360 H St, NE
We first heard Thai was coming to H Street in the former Pho spot back in July 2014. Like the Korean spot across the street, looks like it might still be happening – now proper signage is up for IMM on H. Check out their Annandale, VA menu here.
