PJ Clarke’s Sidecar has just applied for a liquor license in the old Solives spot at 1600 K St, NW. The application says:

“Full service restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Sidecar, 86 seats & P. J. Clarke’s,
116 seats for total indoor capacity of 202. Sidewalk Café with 48 seats.”

I’m a little confused by the description. Is the Sidecar the bar?

Though I say the more sidewalk cafes the better.

“Dear PoP,

Per attached, NYC is getting set to enact a restaurant letter grading system reflecting the sanitary conditions at restaurants and are requiring to be posted prominently in a front window, or on a door or wall that can be seen immediately as diners enter.

I lived in LA for years and the grading system was very helpful in determining restaurants to be avoided for lack of sanitary facilities. as evidenced by a daily examiner (i think) article a few months ago, there is just no way for a consumer to know whether a restaurant is up to code, somewhat sanitary, or god forbid varmint infested.

any idea whether a similar grading system is being considered in dc? while the restaurateurs in NYC may fight the new rule, it would seem an opportunity for restaurants to embrace the system and use it to their advantage.”

So for the Friday Question of the Day: What do you guys think – would this be a good idea for DC?

LiteStars will be located at 2101 L St, NW and according to their Web site:

The LITESTARS lifestyle understands that eating healthier and controlling portions have become a need. Our “functional foods” are created with the goal to improve your health and well-being, beyond nutrition.

We offer customers easy-to-understand nutritional cards, which list the calories, grams of fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, salt and sugars for each menu item. They follow the FDA-approved nutrient content guidelines.

Our mission: ”We pledge to provide our customers with healthier and tastier food choices prepared with fresh ingredients resulting in a meal with less fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates and sugar contents.”

Sounds a little bit too healthy for my lifestyle…

Thanks to a friend of mine for sending the word. He writes:

“There were a couple guys moving stuff out and I asked them if it had closed.. they said ‘yes’ it had. I asked if the knew what was going in and they said ‘no’.”

Evolve was/is located at 1817 Columbia Rd NW. They had pretty good reviews on Yelp. Their Web site is still functioning and their phone works but the message for the phone says something about another company not Evolve. Anyone else notice if they have closed or not? Seems strange to me because they have renewal permits up in the windows. I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available.

Any fans of Evolve out there? Know the scoop?

Wow, thanks to a reader for sending in the following Editorial from the Cleveland Park Listserv:

Editorial: Yes to Tackle Box in the Former McDonald’s Space
by Bill Adler and Peggy Robin
Publishers, Cleveland Park Listserv
www.cleveland-park.com

Is the former McDonald’s space at 3407 Connecticut Avenue, which has been vacant
for over seven years, finally going to become a useful, productive member of
society?

According to today’s Washington Post (http://bit.ly/cVibFy ), Tackle Box, a
seafood restaurant, will be opening in that location. Here’s a brief
description from the Post of what we’re likely to see: “Tackle Box will be
dressed down with picnic tables, weathered buoys and lobster traps and will
require customers to place their orders at a counter.” The Georgetown Tackle
Box on M Street has a menu of “lobster rolls, fried clams and wood-grilled
trout,” but because the Cleveland Park space is three times the size of Tackle
Box in Georgetown, it may also have additional amenities such as bars, both raw
seafood and alcoholic.

The Tackle Box is expected to open no sooner than the end of 2010. If you want
to read more about what Tackle Box serves, visit their website at
http://tackleboxrestaurant.com .

Reports and rumors of restaurants coming into the space once occupied by the
McDonald’s have surfaced over the years. In November 2009 the ANC approved an
alcohol and liquor license for DC Diner, which was to have been a
family-oriented diner with an Asian-infused menu. DC Diner never materialized.
In 2007, Divino, an Argentine restaurant and lounge, tried to fill that space,
but was shooed away because of neighborhood opposition.

Hopefully, the space that was once a McDonald’s is not haunted by ghosts of
failed restaurants and neighborhood opposition past. Let’s all unite behind
bringing a new seafood restaurant to a space that’s been empty for far too long.

Georgetown Wing Co. has opened at 3291 M Street NW upstairs from Crepe Amour.

And I feel like I’ve seen this sign for a while so I wonder if Georgetown Scoops is still coming to 2818 Wisconsin Ave, NW.

The last few times I’ve walked past the Philadelphia Water Ice at 2620 Georgia Ave, NW it has been closed. Since their phone is disconnected I’m assuming this as permanent. Anyone know when they closed?

“Dear PoP,

A new location for Mandalay (Burmese restaurant in Silver Spring, if you haven’t been, it’s great and family-owned!) is slated for a new building being built in Shaw [1501 9th St. NW].

And I had dinner at Adega Wine Cellars in Silver Spring Saturday night and our waiter said the owner is planning a new lounge in DC called the Dirty Martini – I found this website for it, but all it says is “Summer 2010” [ 1223 Connecticut Ave, NW].

I mentioned that Sala Thai had a soft opening in Petworth at 3716 Georgia Avenue, NW a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to share some cool photos of the restaurant getting blessed by monks on June 4th.

However, last night, June 15th, they had their grand opening celebration and the place was packed. Sadly, (long day) I didn’t have my camera with me. But I can tell you the food was great and the vibe was fantastic. Mayor Fenty, CM Bowser and CM Graham stopped by to give their support. I’m also happy to report that the guests were quite diverse, giving proper representation to the community.

Pupuseria San Miguel is located at 3110 Mt Pleasant St NW. I feel like folks who really know their pupusas recommend this spot. It might not jump out at you because you have to walk downstairs but I’m hearing it’s worth the walk. What do you guys think? Are these the best pupusas in town?
