Bistro Cacao opened up back in Jan. ’10 at 320 Mass Ave., NE. Their Web site says:

“Bistro Cacao is the third restaurant venture in DC for the Bolukbasi Brothers. Their first concept was Mezè in Adams Morgan which has given Washington, DC a taste of authentic Turkish cuisine and Istanbul nightlife for more than a decade. Their second venture is Ezmè in Dupont Circle which offers select wines and fine small plates.

In Bistro Cacao’s historic location we now invite you to enjoy our new concept of modern bistro-style French cuisine in a romantically charming and comfortable setting blending old France with modern creative touches.”

You can see their menus here.

Any fans of the brunch? In general?

A recent liquor license application says that the former Tropicana Eatery space at 3522 12th St, NE is going to become Ricky’s Cuban-American Restaurant:

“Cuban-American Restaurant with full service bar with a seating capacity for 35 people and a total occupancy load of 50.”

And while we’re in Brookland, further up 12th St, NE The Brookland cafe has also applied for liquor license an expansion at 3740 12th St, NE.

“Expansion of the dining room seating in quest room next to current seating area to add 30 seats (no construction).

Add Summer Garden with 25 seats.

Add Sidewalk Café with 20 seats.”

You can see their menu here.

From an email:

“Dickson Wine Bar experimented with a new menu format during these past two weeks. We made a huge mistake in taking off some of our loyal customers favorite items, including the banh mi! We heard loud and clear that this ‘sacred cow’ shouldn’t be messed with. Mea culpa, and they are back, along with other fan favorites – the flatbreads, tuna tartar, etc. To thank everyone for their patience and support, we are offering a complimentary happy hour beer or wine with each banh mi ordered this week (through Sunday).”

We last spoke about Dickson Wine Bar, located at 903 U St, NW, here.

Whenever we talk about Indian restaurants two names always pop up – Rasika and Bombay Club (I had no idea they were under the same ownership group.) We judged Rasika in Apr. ’10 but have never properly judged Bombay Club. Bombay Club is located at 815 Connecticut Ave, NW. You can see their menu here. Anyone prefer them over Rasika? Any must order items?

I’ve been getting tons of emails from folks asking for an update on 3313 11th St, NW. For those not familiar with the project we last had an update in May ’11. At the a reader wrote in:

“Update on the vacant yellow building on 11th & Lamont (3313 11th St, NW). Jackie Greenbaum of Jackie’s and Sidebar in Silver Spring is bringing a funky Mexican cuisine to Columbia Heights. Even though the space is only 800 Sq Ft feet, it will have 24 seats downstairs, 30 seats rooftop and 20 seats outside. The menu will be simple as the kitchen will be small. Jackie also mention that there will always be a $5 margarita and plates will range from $2 to $15. She is also interested in utilizing the public gardens behind the building for restaurant use. All permits have been acquired and the building will start in the next couple of weeks with an opening some time in July or early August.”

Well obviously they won’t be opening up this month. But I’m happy to report that they were awarded their liquor license in April. Since that time design revisions have been worked on the space. It is expected for construction to begin very shortly. If all goes well they plan on opening by the end of the year.

Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that Mintwood Place would be coming to 1813 Columbia Rd, NW in Adams Morgan. At the time a liquor license application simply said:

“Restaurant with recorded music and entertainment limited to DJ with no dancing. Seating capacity is 113. Total Occupancy load is 124. Sidewalk Café with seating for 24.”

Last Friday I was lucky to run into Mintwood Place’s new chef and got a brief tour of the space as well as a bit more info about their vision.

So first things first, this is the space underneath Perry’s that used to be a frozen yogurt shop. It’s actually owned by the same guy, Saied Ayoubi, that owns Perry’s. Perhaps the most exciting news is the chef himself – his name is Cedric Maupillier who has previously worked at Central and Citronelle and most recently helped open Medium Rare in Cleveland Park. Central’s Web site still has a bio:

“Chef de Cuisine Cedric Maupillier
Started career at age 15 in a bakery in Toulon
Bachelors degree in hotel and restaurant management
First cooking experience in Monte Carlos at “Café de Paris”
Two years in England working for top restaurants in London and Oxford
Back to France to work in three star Michelin restaurant “La Cotes St. Jacques”
Moved to Courchevel to work in the Relais & Chateaux “du Pralon”

Moved to the US in 2002 and worked under Chef Fabio Trabocchi at Maestro in the Ritz Carlton, Tyson’s Corner
After two years took the position as Sous Chef in Michel Richard Citronelle
In January 2007, opened Central Michel Richard”

As an admitted non foodie even I can realize that this is huge news for Adams Morgan.

Maupillier told me that he is going to try to keep the menu as local as possible and it (as well as cocktails) will change seasonally. This actually keeps with the restaurant’s green build out – where much of the wood used was reclaimed from an Amish barn in Pennsylvania.

The kitchen’s center piece is going to feature a huge wood burning grill. While the menu may be smaller than some are used to seeing – it will still be adventurous. I’m nearly certain I heard him mention frog legs… Of course there will be more traditional items like roast chicken as well. But someone with Maupilier’s pedigree is clearly going to offer up some creative choices.

And here’s more good news – Mintwood Place will be open for breakfast and lunch too. They will make their own croissants and pastries on site. It’s anticipated to be the type of place where folks will come in for a cup of coffee and a croissant and leisurely read the paper in the morning. It is hoped that the restaurant will become a neighborhood gathering spot that will help spur a revival of Columbia Road.

Anticipated opening – mid-October. I can’t wait to see the final menu. Stay tuned.

Lots of copper outside

On Friday I got word that Queen Vic executive Chef Adam Stein had resigned due to creative differences and differences in managerial style. Stein had created an adventurous menu that can be seen here. There were a lot of fans when we judged them back in June ’11. It’ll be interesting to see if the menu changes or stays the same. Queen Vic is located at 1206 H Street NE.
