Washington Post shared the news yesterday:

“Ba Bay, the contemporary Vietnamese restaurant on Capitol Hill, quietly closed its doors last Friday because of “circumstances beyond our control,” e-mails co-owner Denise Nguyen. The closing brings a mysterious end to a restaurant that originally promised to put a modern American spin on Vietnamese cooking for D.C. diners.”

A reader writes:

“Really sad. I work in Barracks Row and ate there all the time, their banh mis were fantastic, as well as their sriracha wings! Never saw too many other people in there though, guess it just didn’t catch on. A shame to lose one of the more inventive restaurants in the neighborhood.”

Ba Bay was located at 633 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. Prior to opening the space was the long abandoned, though the tables were always set for serving, Locanda Italian restaurant.

It’s a sad day for Standard fans, located at the corner of 14th and S St, NW.

From an email:

“standard will be on thanksgiving vacation this week from monday –
thursday, but we’re firing up the smoker and the patio heaters again
friday 11/25 for 10 days of FUN before our last hurrah of the year on
sunday, december 4th
.

standard will be closed for the winter, from december 5th to march 1st.

thanks to our great customers and friends for a really fun year–we look
forward to seeing all of you before we close for the winter, and again
when we reopen on march 1st, 2012!”

Holy freaking awesome. Ed. Note: Those who’ve not followed from the beginning might not get my enthusiasm. But trust me, this is huge for the neighborhood. It’s been such a long wait for Chez Billy’s (nee the old Billy Simpson’s place) coming to 3815 Georgia Ave, NW in Petworth. We’re getting so close. (See a rendering of the inside here.) So how do you think the exterior has turned out so far?

Hard to imagine it looked like this in September:

801 Pennsylvania Ave, NW

Paul Bakery is located at 801 Pennsylvania Ave, NW in Penn Quarter and their Georgetown location at 1078 Wisconsin Ave, NW opens this week. Anyone try the Penn Quarter location yet? You can see their menu items here.

1078 Wisconsin Ave, NW

Ed. Note: The transformation at 1078 Wisconsin Ave, NW is pretty amazing. Below is what it looked like in Aug. ’10

“Dear PoPville,

What is going in on 11th St in the space next door to Columbia Heights Coffee? I’ve seen someone working on the space but cannot determine from the work orders posted who is developing the space or for what purpose.”

This has been an enduring mystery for 11th Street in Columbia Heights. First Columbia Heights Coffee was going to expand, then it was going to become a furniture store, then it was going to become a tapas restaurant then…

Well, lots of folks have noticed renewed construction in the space at 3418 11th St, NW. A new building permit was issued at the end of October and I was finally able to briefly catch one of the managers at the space. By the by, the space is starting to look pretty sweet with exposed brick walls. I hope to grab some photos when the buildout gets a bit closer to finish. Anyway, not a lot of details but I was told it is going to be an Italian restaurant called Maple. They hope to open in about a month. Stay tuned for more updates.

Like others, I love Italian so I’m psyched for this and I’m psyched this long vacant storefront is finally coming back to life.

Café Sorriso is coming to 2311 Calvert St, NW in the former House of Philly pizza spot in Woodley Park. According to a recent liquor license application it will be a:

“New restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner specializing in homemade gelato, deserts, and coffees. Recorded music. Occupancy load is 49. Sidewalk Cafe has 20 seats.”

No we just have to see who moves into the former Cafe de Paris space on the 2nd floor which has been closed since March ’09.
