Around once every few weeks I get an email asking for an update on the Sports Bar coming next to Looking Glass Lounge on Georgia Ave. I’m happy to say I can finally provide one. For those who are unfamiliar with this project you can see some background here.

First the name has changed. The ultimate plan is to still create a much bigger project called the The Green Room. The new name comes from the bar in Pretty Woman called the Blue Banana. Uh, while that wouldn’t be my first choice for the name of a sports bar, I’m glad to say the project is still moving forward.

At any rate, the contractors have been selected and the final construction permits issued. Construction is now likely to start late this week, early next week. Construction will take approximately 10 weeks. They now hope to open in time for Football season but I’m gonna have to guess the Sept./Oct. timeframe if all goes well. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

One of the most anticipated new bars has opened its doors today at 1355 H Street, NE. We looked at some preview photos here back in May. It’s going to be a bit smashed this weekend – from an email:

“Just to let everyone know, we are booked solid for the USA game on Saturday & the Germany Game on Sunday from 1 to 4pm. If you come in for early games, we will kindly ask you to move to the bar at approx 1PM for the reservations coming in. After the games are over, we will be welcoming anyone who would like to come hang out with us. After this weekend we will come up with some set policies for reservations.”

If anyone goes this weekend – send some photos and let us know if it is as good as it looks!

Back in February we learned that Polly’s had closed its doors at 1342 U St, NW. Well as I was walking by last night I noticed some major scrubbing going on inside. It looked like some new furniture might be going in as well. I briefly chatted with one of the folks inside and he said that the space would be reopening in approximately 3-4 weeks. The bar will have a new name (he couldn’t tell me) and there will be food as well (burgers etc.). I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available but it looks like the space will be very similar though a lot cleaner!

Update: A commenter notes:

“Owner of Angelico’s pizza has the space at 1342 U St now. Plans are to open a burger focused place called Port Orleans.”

I’ll try to confirm that info.

The Mighty Pint has opened up in the old Madhatter location at 1831 M St, NW. The layout looks very similar with a huge bar at the entrance and a smaller bar up some stairs in the back:

Anyone check them out yet?

And I didn’t realize the Lawsons sandwich shop closed by the Dupont Metro south exit (across from Krispy Kreme). Anyone heard any rumors of what’s going into that spot?

ESPN Zone is located at 555 12th St, NW. AP reports:

“The Walt Disney Co. said Wednesday that it is closing five ESPN Zone restaurants in Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., saying the economics of the business were “very challenging.”

When we discussed World Cup viewing possibilities ESPN Zone came up a few time. I’m now liking Public Bar in Dupont as a good replacement. (Though I’m still praying I can get a seat at Momo’s on U St.)

A few weeks ago Porter’s abruptly closed up at 1207 19th St, NW (south of the Dupont Metro). While the following has not been confirmed I believe it is likely to be accurate but I still gotta call it scuttlebutt: It looks like the space is going to be taken over by the owner of Maddy’s (on Conn. Ave also in Dupont) and the Ugly Mug (on Barrack’s Row). Not sure on a date or new name but will update when that info becomes available (if it turns out to be true…) We took a look at Maddy’s here when it opened up back in Nov.

Well you can see how this new tavern/bistro got its name (the red building was a former fire station) however it’s not clear if the bar will also take up the old fire house space. The signs for the alcohol application were located on the newer section to the right of the above photo. But the liquor application says that the address is 400-438 Massachusetts Ave., NW so it wasn’t clear to me where 400 began and 438 ended. This section of Mass Ave is heating up with the recently opened Buddha Bar. According to the alcohol application, Sixth Engine will be a:

“New Tavern, American Bistro with full entrée menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner;
recorded music, no entertainment no dancing. Seating capacity is 270 and total occupancy load is
350. Sidewalk Café with 64 seats.”

If you were excited about the sneak peek from three weeks ago these photos could very well blow your mind (I know my jaw hit the floor on multiple occasions). First let me say that (as others have noted) the new opening date for Meridian Pint is looking like it’ll be June 17th give or take a few days.

But back to the table taps. Holy freaking cow these things are awesome. I believe these are the first table taps in any bar/restaurant in DC. So they are located in the lower level in the Joint Chiefs section. There are currently two tables set up with table taps (with a possibility of adding a third). There are two taps per table and the patrons simply swipe their card and have at it. As this bar celebrates American Craft Beers (more on that in a second) you’re not likely to find Schlitz on these table taps (no disrespect to Schlitz). They are unbelievable cool:

Lots more photos of the space and more on American Craft Brew masters visit after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I’m looking for where I and some soccer-loving buddies of mine should go watch some World Cup matches, especially the US ones, a couple of which are fairly early in the morning.

The basic requirements are:

*good beer

*giant teevees tuned appropriately

*lots of other fans, but not so many the fire marshal gets involved

Wondering if you can throw this one out to the wisdom of the hive mind.”

Well first let me say that, as you may have heard yesterday, bars are allowed to open 1 hour earlier than usual at 7am for the World Cup. You guys played a small role in that decision voting 93% in favor of this legislation before it was legislation…

At the time I said I thought it would be fun to watch the games at two soon to be opened spots – Biergarten Haus on H St, NE and Meridian Pint at 11th and Park Road, NW.

Other good choices:

On U Street – Momo’s at 1334 U St. NW is likely to be very crowded but very fun.

Stoney’s on P St (b/w 13th and 14th, NW), in Logan Circle (pictured above).

In Adams Morgan on 18th St, NW you can catch the games at Ventnor Sports Cafe. Also in Adams Morgan games will be shown at Tryst and The Diner. (And in Woodley Park at Tryst’s cousin – Open City).

You can’t go wrong at Lucky Bar on Connecticut Ave in south Dupont.

Ugly Mug will probably be a good bet for those near Barrack’s Row.

If you have other recommendations of where to catch the game please leave in the comments.
