RFD is located at 810 7th St, NW in Chinatown. I’ve heard really really mixed reviews of RFD – some absolutely love and some feel it is a bit generic feeling. You can see their famous beer list here and menus here. What’s the final word?

“Dear PoPville,
I figured you had a great venue for discussing sports bars in the area and specific bars for various teams. It seems that with Blue Banana, Lou’s Etc opening in the area there might be some opportunity to make a bar a destination for fans.”
Back in Oct. ’09 a Seahawks fan wrote in to find out where all the Seahawks fans watch games in DC. Washingtonian has a good list of where various NFL fans watch games. So I guess with new bars opening and football season around the corner – the last fun Friday Question of the Day for August will be a two parter.
With new bars opening up – who do you think they will be affiliated with? Who do you think they should be affiliated with? Or does that just happen in an organic way?
And more generally, where do you watch your teams play – both college and NFL football?
As a newly converted Redskins fan (long story that I’ll address in a separate post) – Where is the best bar to watch Washington play?

Thrillist shares the word that the former Saki located at 2477 18th St, NW is reopening tonight at District Underground. District’s Web site (warning super loud music plays) says:
“District is Washington DC’s newest addition to nightlife. With the space and design unlike any other venue in DC, District allows its clientele to experience the coziness of an upscale lounge with the space of a nightclub. District features 7,200 SF of space on two levels, a 60 foot wrap around bar, outdoor deck, large private table areas, the most spacious VIP table areas in the city, and state of the art lighting & sound systems. Our infusions bar featuresinnovative cocktails, house-made infused cocktails, and sodas, including our signature habanero infused tequila or home made “grand marnier”. And, our full-scale kitchen is open late, offering a menu of contemporary surf and turf fare and desert, a perfect complement to any party. District will be defined by unparalleled customer service and a celebration experience like no other.”

From an email:
“Dickson Wine Bar experimented with a new menu format during these past two weeks. We made a huge mistake in taking off some of our loyal customers favorite items, including the banh mi! We heard loud and clear that this ‘sacred cow’ shouldn’t be messed with. Mea culpa, and they are back, along with other fan favorites – the flatbreads, tuna tartar, etc. To thank everyone for their patience and support, we are offering a complimentary happy hour beer or wine with each banh mi ordered this week (through Sunday).”
We last spoke about Dickson Wine Bar, located at 903 U St, NW, here.

I’ve been getting tons of emails from folks asking for an update on 3313 11th St, NW. For those not familiar with the project we last had an update in May ’11. At the a reader wrote in:
“Update on the vacant yellow building on 11th & Lamont (3313 11th St, NW). Jackie Greenbaum of Jackie’s and Sidebar in Silver Spring is bringing a funky Mexican cuisine to Columbia Heights. Even though the space is only 800 Sq Ft feet, it will have 24 seats downstairs, 30 seats rooftop and 20 seats outside. The menu will be simple as the kitchen will be small. Jackie also mention that there will always be a $5 margarita and plates will range from $2 to $15. She is also interested in utilizing the public gardens behind the building for restaurant use. All permits have been acquired and the building will start in the next couple of weeks with an opening some time in July or early August.”
Well obviously they won’t be opening up this month. But I’m happy to report that they were awarded their liquor license in April. Since that time design revisions have been worked on the space. It is expected for construction to begin very shortly. If all goes well they plan on opening by the end of the year.

Back in March we learned that the upstairs bar at Asylum (2471 18th St, NW) would be rebranded into a craft beer establishment (from the same ownership as Meridian Pint.) I’ve been getting some emails for updates and was fortunate to get a sneak peek of the renovated space.
First let me say that the downstairs will remain Asylum. I’m told it is exactly the same as it has always been and will continue to feature veggie and vegan fare. They will be celebrating their 20th anniversary tomorrow. Ed. Note: Asylum is owned by the same folks who own Meridian Pint (primarily John Andrade) and is a PoP advertiser.
But back to the new spot. Credit for the name goes to new general manager Matthew Heffernan who came up with “The Smoke & Barrel”. As you can see from the tagline on the logo below the focus is going to be on BBQ, Beer and Bourbon:

A bit about the BBQ. A new chef is expected to be announced shortly but what I thought was pretty cool was that the search extended to Texas, Kansas City, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee and elsewhere in BBQ country. The BBQ menu (smoker on site) will also feature beer pairings from the 24 beers to be offered on tap.
Stay tuned for a sneak peek at the menu.
Construction is ongoing but here is a taste of the new look upstairs:

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up. Back in July ’10 we learned that Evolve had closed at 1817 Columbia Rd NW. I’ll be sure to update when they open up.

“Dear PoP,
Just read that Fat Tire (and other New Belgium brews) the Fort Collins, CO beer phenomenon that swept through the South in the latter part of my tenure there is finally making up to the mid-atlantic. Starting next Monday, August 22nd, 17 distributors will now be putting out Fat Tire across the DMV. All except for the poor souls of Montgomery County. This is excellent news, because this beer is AWESOME. Old articles here, but the date is what’s important!”
BeerAdvocate reported:
“New Belgium Brewing is pleased to announce that it has signed contractual agreements with 17 distributors in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas. The freshly inked deals will broaden New Belgium distribution to 28 states and the District of Columbia when those territories officially open on August 22nd, 2011.”

From an email:
“I’m fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while training for the Nike Women’s Marathon on October 16th.
My fundraising goal is $5,000 – but every little bit helps.
The details:
Friday August 19th 6-9PM
Town Tavern – Adams Morgan (2323 18th St. NW)
$5 Donation gets you $2 mixed rails and domestic bottles”

Nati Hokah bar opened up in March at 2839 Georgia Ave, NW. The alcohol application says:
“New Tavern. Light food. Live entertainment, DJ, jazz band and cover charge. Occupancy load is 53. Summer Garden with 9 seats.”
