From the folks at the Red Derby (3718 14th Street, NW):

this summer, the derby has been doing a back-to-school drive in support of DASH, District Alliance for Safe Housing — a local dc 501(c)(3) organization — that provides access to safe housing for moms and kids who are victims of domestic violence. DASH is an awesome organization that has been around for approximately 5 years.

every season, we do a fundraiser in support of DASH — this summer, we have committed to providing the 63 kids at DASH who are going back to school with backpacks and school supplies (ie, paper, binders, notebooks, weekly planners, glue sticks, pens, pencils, dictionaries … — essentially, everything with which a student needs to start off the school year).

we’re declaring this sunday, August 5th DASH DAY
some of our reps, in particular, New Belgium Brewery and Premium Distributorship of DC and Republic National Distributing Company, have been most generous …. —so, on Sunday, August 5th…all day and all night — if you come to the derby, and you drink:
new belgium beers (fat tire, ranger or shift)
pbr
natty boh
and a tasty selection of drinks …
all the proceeds from the purchase of these beers and tasty drinks will go directly to DASH and the back to school drive!

Churchkey

From a press release:

Let the pandemonium begin! 3 Stars Brewing Company invites all of DC (or at least everyone 21+ of age) to come celebrate their entry into the market at two separate release events during the week of August 6th at Churchkey & The Big Hunt.

The premiere release event is being hosted at Churchkey (1337 14th St., NW) on Thursday, August 9th starting at 4 PM. All three 3 Stars beers – the Pandemic Porter, the Southern Belle, and the Urban Farmhouse – will be featured on draft. The guys will also be showcasing the Pandemic and the Urban Farmhouse Saison in cask that evening with a special cask of the Southern Belle (more detail about this will be available that evening for attendees only).

If you can’t make it to Churchkey on Thursday night, join the 3 Stars Brewing Company team at The Big Hunt on the 10th for a Friday Night Craft Beer Bash (what better way to kick off the weekend and pre-game your liver and palette for DC Beer Week?!). The festivities begin at 5 PM at The Big Hunt (1345 Connecticut Ave., NW), with all three beers on draft and at least one available in cask. This event is open to the general public (21+ only please).

1737 Connecticut Ave, NW

I was amazed at all the progress made at 1737 Connecticut Ave, NW where the BoardRoom is coming to the former Anna Maria restaurant (which closed in June 2009.) In Oct. 2011 we learned it will become a:

“New Tavern. Vintage game room with jukebox. Occupancy load is 251, seating is 90.”

You can see what the building looked like in June 2011 here.

Walking by earlier in the week you can get a peek of the inside:

1635 North Capitol Street, NW

Dear PoPville,

Does anyone know the official plans for 1635 North Capitol Street? Progress has been slow on this building, but recently it has been picking up. It looks pretty good so far. I had a brief conversion with a contractor right after the storefront was installed. He said the place was going to be a wine bar.

Back in Aug. 2011 we looked at a Craigslist ad mentioning a wine bar coming to the retail space at 1635 North Capitol St, NW (former Borf building.) Has anyone else heard that a wine bar was still planning on coming to that space?
