2404 Wisconsin Avenue, NW

Kitchen 2404 closed back in July.

From a press release:

Glover Park officially becomes home to Slate Wine Bar + Bistro today at 4 pm when the highly-anticipated new restaurant opens its doors to welcome friends and neighbors looking to share some of the best quality food and wine around.

Slate Wine Bar Owner and Wine Director, Elizabeth Banker, says, “The Slate team has been working tirelessly to transform this space into a welcoming and comfortable wine bar and restaurant. We are excited to share what we have worked so hard to create and to add to the diversity of Glover Park’s dining options.”

The two uniquely Slate creations are the wine list and the bistro menu. The wines have been hand-selected by Elizabeth, with input from Bar Manager Noah Naft, and focus on smaller production wines from family-owned estates that practice sustainable or organic farming and take a hands-off approach to winemaking. Banker explains, “The primary reason for this focus is experience having shown me that wines that fall into this description tend to be wines with an identity and character that makes them memorable. Of course, some wines made it on to the list by simply being delicious!”

For non-wine lovers, Slate has a great selection of cocktails and craft beers.

The wines complement the bistro menu created by Journeyman Chef and General Manager Mark Krieger. The menu features everything from light snacks to cheese plates, heartier fare including a wide selection of unique salads, panini and the Clean Slate burger, and entrees including steak frites and salmon. Desserts are hand-made by Lester DC’s “Pie King” in Slate’s kitchen. Menu items focus on using the best possible ingredients and simple preparations that showcase the ingredients. The menu will change seasonally and will be supplemented by daily and weekly specials from the freshest local ingredients.

Slate will offer daily wine features, flights, and pairing advice. Slate will also host a wide-range of educational and entertaining wine events, including winemaker dinners, tasting seminars, wine clubs, escorted trips to wine regions, and more. Slate’s first wine dinner is September 11, 2012, featuring Copain Winery from California. Details and information on other upcoming events will be posted on the website at www.slatewinebar.com.

11th and Monroe St, NW

It’s been almost a year since we talked about the new Tryst/Diner spot coming to 11th Street, NW (between Park and Monroe) in Columbia Heights. I am very excited to share some good news – they are opening in mid/late September!

I was also lucky enough to get a tour of the 7000 square foot space.

As you can see there was still some work going on but you can get an idea of how the space will flow. The main entrance will be through the middle of the building on the 11th Street side and you’ll enter into the Tryst-like part of the space.

Here you’ll be able to get coffee/pastries etc. and you’ll also be able to make to go orders.

If you turn to the left (north) you’ll enter the Diner-like space which features more seating and a wrap-around bar. Remember the space will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – which means breakfast all day!

As those who have walked by know – the entire length of the building is set with big bay windows that will open up.

You’ll also notice incredible tin ceilings throughout the space.

So enter in the center to the Tryst-like area, turn left to the Diner-like space – and if your turn right from the main entrance you will enter another large bar space.

This bar area features exposed brick:

And more great tin ceilings:

While there will be three distinct features, coffee, dining and bar – I’m told that each space will flow into the other and you can order whatever you’d like anywhere you are seated. There are many more details coming soon – but hopefully this will give you a taste of what’s to come. Oh yeah – the name is coming soon. Can’t wait for September!

200 Upshur St, NW

Back in June we learned that the Hitching Post, located at 200 Upshur St, NW had been sold to the owner of Fusion. I’m happy to report that the renovations have been completed and they are soft opening for cocktails at 5pm tonight. They will be open for dinner tomorrow night (Thurs.)

Finishing touches were ongoing when I stopped by but the new bar pictured above will give you a taste of the renovations.

The former owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, will always be a part of the Hitching Post:

And fear not they kept the jukebox:

Uptown Tap House will be opening in the former 4 Fields/4Ps space at 3412 Connecticut Ave, NW in Cleveland Park. A few weeks ago we looked at a Craigslist ad that described the new place as:

“offering a sophisticated selection of locally inspired seafood dishes, house specialty prime rib and an expedition raw bar complemented by an upscale beverage program along with legendary service.”

Stay tuned for an opening date when it is announced.

3232 11th St, NW

Back in April 2012 we noted Room 11 was getting closer to their expansion in Columbia Heights. I stopped by and took a peek at the expanded space on Sunday and there has been serious progress made. One of the owners I spoke with said they were shooting for a Sept./Oct. opening of the expanded space.

And following the news of the explosion of outdoor cafe seating downtown, comes word that Room 11 is also hoping to add more outdoor seats in front of their expanded space in the old Jeans n Things at 3232 11th St, NW. Great news for those who enjoy drinking/dining outside.

2440 18th Street, NW

Back in July we learned Madam’s Organ had applied for a sidewalk cafe across the street from Millie and Al’s at 2461 18th Street, NW. Millie and Al’s application is one of the first I’ve seen for a sidewalk cafe on the west side of 18th Street.

Here’s how that side of 18th Street currently looks:

621 Pennsylvania Ave, SE

Pound the Hill opened up at 621 Pennsylvania Ave, SE in March 2011 (at about the same time they closed their NoMa location.) Pound the Hill’s Bistro launched in Jan. 2012.

Eater DC interviewed owner Karl Johnson:

How close are you to being forced to close?
That’s a really hard question to answer in this industry just because of the nature of how random cash flow is at some times. We’re in a pretty bad situation. We’re doing absolutely everything we can to not let that happen. That’s kind of why I sent out that email was not to say “we’re closed tomorrow” but to basically say, “this is very, very, very realistic that this might happen” and put my pride aside and say, basically, come help me.
